- This is the Dharma talk that Thay offered from Day 5 of the Nottingham Retreat given on August 17, 2010. Thay shares the "three concentrations of the Three Dharma Seals", and explains, in detail, the concept of "no-birth no-death" in Christian terms.

After so many videos I have watched, one day I was under strong distress. At this moment, I was able to just recognise I was breathing in and breathing out. My worries were still there but they were not part of me. I was aware of them, I was just a few inches of them, but they were not me. For these very few seconds, I was truly alive. Thank you master.
This is one of the strongest Dharma talks in my humble opinion Thay had ever done. In my notes summary ● The Double Belonging (as Thich Nhat Hanh explains) - The 3 Doors of Liberation - [The practice of contemplating on 1.Emptiness(Impermanence/Non-Self/Interbeing/Continuation), 2.Aimlessness(Release of the craving, the longing elsewhere in the future), 3.Signlessness(Nirvana, Contemplating on the ultimate - No Birth - No Death,beyond existence or non-existence - on God itself)] - the result is freeing onnrself of the foundations of the notions of fear, separation, and desperation. Thank you for your teachings Thay! Your transmission has enlightened life for me, so I could feel free, and no longer stuck on the level of words.

Love this talk sadly not all Mothers were happy, healthy or did such loving practices we need to remember that suffering can begin before birth. I did not have mindful parents thank God for the Dharma

Thich Nhat Hanh writes: -Anyone who understands the theory of relativity knows that space is intimately connected with both time and matter. For such persons, space has a larger meaning than for persons who still believe that space exists independently of time and matter. When we look at a bee, we may like to see it first through the eyes of a physicist who understands relativity, and then go even beyond that to see true emptiness and the miraculousness of existence in it. If you attempt to do this regularly, with your whole being, I am sure that it will free you from entanglement in the net of birth and death. - In Zen circles, the problem of birth and death has always been regarded as the most urgent. Zen Master Hakuin calligraphed the character for Death quite large and then added in smaller strokes: "Anyone who sees to the depths of this word is a true hero." I used to think that liberation from birth and death was a remote goal. While I was teaching at the Van Hanh Buddhist University in Saigon, I looked at the statues of emaciated Arahats, and I thought it must be necessary to deplete our strength that much, to reduce our desires until a total exhaustion overtakes us, to realize this liberation. But later, while I was practicing at Phuong Boi, in central Vietnam, I realized that liberation from birth and death is not an abstract or long-term Birth and death are only concepts. To be free from these concepts is to be free from birth and death. It is attainable. -But liberation from birth and death cannot come from intellectual comprehension alone. When you see the interdependent nature of everything in the universe, when you understand the meaning of true emptiness and the miraculousness of existence, you have sown the seeds of liberation in the field of your consciousness. For these seeds to grow we need to practice meditation. Through the practice of meditation, we may become strong enough to break through the concept of birth and death, which is really just one of the many, many concepts we create. A physicist who is able to see the interpenetration and interbeing of elementary particles without going beyond his or her intellect has, from the viewpoint of Buddhist liberation, attained just a decorative facade. -Someone who studies Buddhism without practicing meditation has also accumulated knowledge only as decoration. We hold our own fates in our own hands. We have the capacity to practice until all concepts about birth and death, and being and non-being, are uprooted.

While it's true that one is a continuation of one's father, it's also true that the actions of both father and son may be entirely different. I know 2 sons (my friends) who, despite repeated attempts to reconcile with their father, have been unable to do so. To my knowledge, they did nothing that would make their father's behavior understandable. They strike me as quite different from their father; their attempt to reconcile makes that abundantly clear. The point is that their actions, their temperaments nonetheless make them distinct individuals. They are my friends on the basis of their ACTIONS, not on the basis of being the biological continuity of their father. On a more general note, a father can have all sorts of vices to which a son or daughter is not prone. A father may not have a great mind; his son may be a genius. So there clearly are or may be important differences to consider.
Lynn, I guess in the Buddhist world view this is just one of many worlds and realms of being. So given that its not too hard to imagine how.

There are other syntaxes. There is one, for example, which demands that varieties of intensity be taken as facts. In that syntax nothing begins and nothing ends; thus birth is not a clean, clear-cut event,
but a specific type of intensity, and so is maturation, and so is death.
A man of that syntax, looking over his equations, finds that
he has calculated enough varieties of intensity to say with authority
that the universe never began and will never end, but that it has gone, and is going now, and will go through endless fluctuations of intensity.

Lynn Smith: I do not think there are more births than deaths in the world. Looking back the very firt time when human started to appear in this world, billions people died already. And those people who died could re-incarnate/reborn and become the people who are living now. The more people reborn, the more births comparing to deaths.

He means birth and death are transformations of your pure energy essence. Birth doesn't come from nowhere, death isn't final. It's just transformation.
