I'm glad this is useful to you and the timing worked out. Part I was an introduction to Advanced Techniques. Not including Tilts, everything in that video could be mastered within a week. Unfortunately, the same is not true of Part II. Pivots, Ledge hopping, and Short hopping take a lot of practice before they feel familiar. Z-cancelling takes hours and hours of practice to even get a sense for how it works. High level players miss Z-cancels in their matches still today. But don't be discouraged, even being aware of these techniques puts you in a class above a significant portion of casual players and if you stick at it, your game will evolve in no time. Happy training!
Nate L The controller you show while playing and the way you talk about what you might be doing when something isn't working is what really helps the most. It's something that I think is hard to learn when you don't often get to play with people in person and see them play
This is by far the most comprehensive and easy to understand SSB64 tutorial out there! Thank you for creating this amazing series. Is there any chance you'll cover the new smash remix characters in the near future?
Why couldn't I find this guide when I was actually playing smash competitively. Although I knew about all the things in at least the first two videos I discovered them all by just playing a stupid amount of smash. This would have saved me so much time.
For some reason I can't find your other comment anywhere except my notifications window. You asked about stick hopping so I'll just answer here. A well-rounded player uses both C buttons and the thumbstick to jump, depending on the situation. The default is to use the C buttons since it is much easier to short hop with them and I find you get more control of your aerials. However, the extra height you get with the thumbstick (only 1st jump from the ground) is essential for some combos to connect or to land perfectly on a platform. Being comfortable with the various jumps and when to use them is essential for each character that you want to play with high proficiency.
I used "camera angle" cheat codes. If you're interested, I'm sure you can find them in this thread (smashboards.com/threads/gameshark-code-collection.341009/)
Ah sorry about that. It's one of the stickied post in the 64 section of smashboards so pretty easy to navigate to. Pizza's cheats might include it, I'm not sure. I made these intros before his preset I think
These videos are great. But where do you play to work up your skills? Thank god I have my stoner room mates that love playing but other than that I would have no one to play with. Do you play online at all?
+Mathis Arnell Depends where you live. These days there are so many small crews that you can find solid 64 players in almost every city. Consult the map on this thread: (smashboards.com/threads/ssb-player-location-world-map.335052/). Online is always an option and it doesn't take too long to get used to the lag. It also forces you to simplify your playstyle which will naturally make your spacing better. You can also learn a ton from paying close attention to high level matches on youtube and then practicing movement and combos in training mode. Of course it's easy to let your spacing skill fall behind with this strategy though.
Nate - Thanks again for uploading these, super helpful and I have been practicing. Two questions: 1. Is there a good place to buy controllers? All of mine have been very much abused and they don't work as well as I would like for some of the more finesse moves 2. Is there an easy way to play other people online? I hear about emulators online but not sure where to buy / how to use them. Much appreciated!!!
1. Unfortunately, finding quality controllers is a challenge that many players still face because there isn't really a good solution. I've played with controllers that were bought on ebay of surprisingly good quality but you can never really be sure. It's a good idea to stay away from third party controllers or thumbsticks as they don't generally feel similar to the original. It might be worth contact the ebay sellers directly before ordering from them. I will say that once you have a good controller, you can keep it in good condition by greasing the stick. Info on that here: smashboards.com/threads/n64-controllers-discussion.335532/. Unfortunately you'll have to skim a lot of useless information in that thread to find what you're looking for. 2. Check the "Playing Online" tab here for information about emulators: smashboards.com/threads/smash-64-index-read-here-first.350305/. Finding people to play with is a matter of where you live. As far as I know, there are a few active servers on the Eastern side of the US but if you're on the West coast like me, you generally have to schedule games with players in advance (let me know if you'd like to try). Good luck practicing!
This tutorial series is easily the best for 64 (love the inclusion of drills), but it's a bit distracting because you look like Adrian Grenier. No homo.
So, there's of course a difference between Stick and c-button jumps. But what about shorthop Stick jumps and C button shorthops? Is there a noteable difference there?
Yes, if you hit the thumbstick part of the way up you can get various jump heights beyond the ones described here. As a demonstration, go into training mode with a character whose SH isn't high enough to land on side plat but whose fullhop is so high that they fall onto side plat after jumping (falcon and fox are good examples). Now hit the thumbstick partway up until you get a jump height in between the two. To my knowledge, this is a relatively unexplored technique (hasn't made it to mid-level competitive players and no one seems to talk about it) perhaps due to it's inconsistency and bad ratio of effort to payoff. On the other hand, here's some clips of 2013 Isai using it: 1) ruclips.net/video/zSeklw5VhCo/видео.html - after the uptilt he gets a perfect land on side plat to tech chase Firo. Fox's SH isn't high enough to land on side plat and his fullhop isn't a perfect land (notice you see no puff of dust when fox lands in the clip). 2) ruclips.net/video/D1IL0Cm7Csw/видео.html - again he gets a jump height which I am unfamiliar with to almost perfect land on the side plat for his 3rd uair)
I wanna know how the player Isia is able to do two or more aireils after edge hogging, even down aireil with link and then forward... not hitting the ground.. so no z cancel? I don't understand.
+Nathan Rockwell I'm pretty sure that Isai has never done Dair > Fair without hitting the ground from a ledgehop on Link. If you have a clip then I'd be happy to take a look but even Isai can't change how the game works. He's just a very fast, fluid player who has tons of experience. If you practice a lot, you can get your movement to look just like his
ThebirdmanTrainer I actually do use the Z trigger to Z cancel (although you can use R) but I use the R trigger for my aerials instead of A. I do this because it minimizes the amount of movement my fingers have to do. Specifically, my right thumb doesn't have to do both the C buttons and the A button if I use R with my index finger instead. I briefly discuss it here: ruclips.net/video/GX4Vebv2PM8/видео.htmlm14s Note that although I think this is optimal, it is not significantly better than using the A button. You should do whatever you are comfortable with (I think I'm in the minority using R for aerials).
Travel to the majors. And check (smashboards.com/threads/ssb-player-location-world-map.335052/) to see if there are local players you can start a scene with. Good luck and keep practicing
It's extremely hard to pivot so that you grab the ledge in this game. I got it twice, but the timing is so strict. I'm working on being a Smash U pro and now I want to be a high level player in 64 too.
+Mother/EB Yeah it depends on the character. If you put in some good practice on Falcon or Luigi, you'll be able to get it quite consistently. People don't really use it in high level matches on other characters (except Fox's run turn-around to edgegrab which is similar)
Thanks. It's a gameshark code: No DreamLand Wind & No Hyrule Tornado: 80131410 0011 There's a nice list of lots of codes here: onlinessb.com/ (in the "resources" tab)
I'd like to make a comment for those playing on the Wii or Wii U Virtual Console: on the pro controllers, the right analog stick is also the C-Stick. You can just flick that to short hop. I usually don't because it induces more input frames from the short hop to the attack. I have gotten speedy, so actually it doesn't make a difference. :)
Oh! Also with Mario, most smashers know the combo with the short hop and Mario's down-air, if you do the down-air soon enough, you can then follow that up with an up-air to knock opponents skyward.
collwatt Disengaging from the ledge uses a jump. So after you ledge hop you only have one jump remaining (unless playing Kirby/Jigglypuff in which case you'll have 5)
I want to donate money to you given how much you have taught me via all your video tutorials. 12 out of 10 stars for you brother. Quick question. In your "UP TILTS" tutorial, you use the "A" button to perform the attack but in the "Z CANCEL" tutorial you utilize the "R" button. Which is more beneficial and why?
I appreciate it man, no need to donate though. Just pay me back by getting some of your friends into the game and starting a scene. There are arguments on both sides of button usage. But you can't uptilt with R since you will grab instead. This means that you have to use A to tilt and jab. You only have a choice of what button to use for smash attacks and aerial attacks. When I'm doing an aerial right after jumping (especially when short hopping), I like to use R since it means I don't have to use my right thumb for both jumping and the aerial attack. However, there's a strange interaction where if you are holding R for an aerial while you try to Z cancel (with Z), it won't work. So when I'm doing an aerial really close to the ground of a FF aerial, I'll often use A instead of R (since I don't need to let go of A before tapping Z). Most of this is personal preference though, lot's of people use R only to grab and A for everything else. Though I do think my way has a number of advantages.
Are people playing this game on PCs online with an emulator? Can I buy an adapter to use a N64 controller in that case? How does it work how do I set it up (the emulator)?
+James Rasmussen Yes you can. It just makes it harder because you have less time in between the aerial coming out and you hitting the ground. Try practicing with Link's dair from one of the higher platforms on Hyrule at first and you will see it working. Top players z-cancel FF aerials from the dreamland side platforms so try to work up to that!
Oh nice. Well I respect him a lot and he's one of the people who taught me how to efficiently practice so I'd like to thank him for that in person someday
You're not trash! Z-cancelling is a tough one to learn. What's happening when you miss? If your shield comes up then you're holding Z too long. If you aren't getting the cancel at all there's a couple things that could be going wrong: you could be way too early, a bit too late, OR maybe you're using R to aerial and not letting go of it before pressing Z (since R=Z+A you can't hold it and get a Z-cancel).
Nate L Ok so I’ve been noticing with Mario’s drop kick he does his legs will spin usually. I’m not sure if I’m doing the z cancel right or not but sometimes I do the drop kick and it comes out real quick with no spin to the legs. I’m not sure what else he has in terms of moves to see if I can z cancel those properly. I know you said in the video to practice with Link it’s just that I main Mario.
@@Mr.Monky420 Hmm I'm not sure what move you're talking about. To be clear, Z-cancelling only applies to aerial attacks. If you're on the ground, you can't Z-cancel
