It's an important distinction people start learning as kids when they see displays of affection that are non sexual and don't lead to anything sexual as well as a range of non sexual relationships. Many teachers are leaving rather than “Affirm” in MN affirming is the same as mandated Reporting. To not affirm a questioning adolescent can bring charges. A child’s parent that won’t affirm, the child can be removed from the home immediately. This is new MN state law. I graduated high school in 97 in Canada. We had many gay & bi individuals in my school. It wasn’t a big deal, more avoided then hated. Everyone was just able to be who they were. It’s unbelievable to me how backwards the world has gone. It’s become so hateful. Does someone being gay, bi, a different nationality or colour than yourself affect your everyday life?? Does them existing make it so you can’t exist? The only thing I can think of is that it makes you feel uncomfortable, you’re afraid! You’re afraid of what if someone you love comes out as gay or transgender. It’s all about fear.
I think that's exactly what it is. Fear leads to a lot of things people try to stay away from. And the more people don't know about something, the more they become frightened. When I was in Jr high (97), I was like you. I don't remember anyone being gay or bi, only because they just didn't stick out. I think history has a habit of repeating itself, every 50yrs or so. Now seems to be that time for the gay rights movement. However it's opened up to more than just "gay," we now have the LGBTQ+ community. And just like the movement back then, people in power and politics are trying to stop them.

I hear what you're saying and agree kids should have a safe place in schools. However, this teacher is showing the movie because of the topic as a whole and not the subject in a two minute span. Not to say one can't let kids be open with how they feel from it. Just the fact that the movie she picked (because it's fun and kid friendly) has this two minute part, parents went in an uproar about it. That's saying something about how prejudice they are. I feel sorry for the kids having to go through all that and not even knowing why.

Not just Math, Science, English, etc. Providing students with “tools” to understand themselves and the world around them allows them to make informed decisions about the type of person they will develop into later in life. We hope they will learn ways to manage their emotions when frustrated, identify and take appropriate action if they are being harmed or observe someone else being harmed or bullied. During the pandemic, parents did their best to continue educating their children. That was the correct action to take since some schools were closed. But children missed out on engagement with other people (staff, administrators, children, classmates). They missed out on access to research based social emotional training that credentialed teachers provide in the classrooms. Based on your state or any “concerned” parents respective state, if you look at your version of the California Common Core Standards, teachers are teaching those components. I work with post-secondary students and wonder what will happen to the children from families who, at best, out of love and concern, or at worst, ignorance, push for their children to be educated in environments without diverse view points. At the post secondary level, these children will be competing with other young people GLOBALLY. Children who were educated in diverse learning environments, children who received socio-emotional training and know how to work with global partners to earn a good living. It’s fine for parents to explain and model healthy values and expectations for their children. And when children are exposed to diversity in school, libraries, camp, etc. for parents to talk to their children about those different viewpoints. Young people have the internet now, so censoring educators is not logical. Young people will find ways to educate themselves. It is the role of credentialed educators and parents to structure their learning in meaningful ways. Allow the child to observe their own feelings and talk about what they think.

I'm a teacher for over 12 years and I had students tell me about their two moms, I had a student tell me she wanted to be called a boy's name and pronoun, and I had a student talk to me about being bisexual. These kids are talking to me about things that they are curious about and I didn't open any doors, they did. This generation of kids are more aware of the world around them than we give them credit for. Maybe kids are more comfortable talking to teachers about things like this since many come from homes with parents like that lady. I feel sad for them to hide their questions and outraged that teachers are being extremely micromanaged in a field where we aren't treated like the educated professionals we are.
I think that's different. If you are just the type of teacher that a kid feels comfortable confiding in that's different than introducing sexual topics to children. It's not that they are not be credit for what they know it's the encouraging of certain things behind parents back. If I send my kid to school and you send me a report card of not my child's name as a parent you will be bothered by that. Overall point when teachers engage in these conversations when do they try and link the child back to there parents. 80s baby kids were talking about sex but they were not bringing it up to adults because it was something said that shouldn't be engaging in.

The problem is that nobody wants to talk about LGBTQ for what it is from a purely clinical perspective. As gay and trans represent a minute percentage of the population, we must acknowledge that it is a biological abnormality. As such, birth defects come in many forms, but children should be taught to understand that, yet still accepting of people for who they are. The problem with Hollywood, is that they are force feeding the public with gay and trans characters as though it were normal-which it is not. Understanding the biological reality and accepting that reality are quite different, but we can do both. Certainly, our educational system should be allowed to confront that reality.
You and most teachers are Not qualified to handle these issues. Teachers teach and parents parent, prepare the kids to work, go to college or get a trade, nothing more.

I am one of the 25 students in this teachers class, we had just finished standardized testing for science and my teacher, who believes in magic and how energy can heal, decided to play this movie because it was relevant to what we were learning. The 2 minutes of this movie that showed anything gay was mostly just one of the characters being shy around the other. Both of these characters were male. While we were watching to movie we had part of another class in our room because their teacher was busy and couldn’t teach. One of these students was a school board members daughter and told her mom about the movie. Another reason that the mother was mad was because the gay character in the movie was also biracial. I believe that this woman was being racist and homophobic and was overusing her power as a school board member. Not only this, but many students in our grade, including myself, have come out as gay to our teachers and friends at our school. There is no way that this was a topic their child wasn’t fully aware of. I just wanted to shed some light on this subject, my teacher may lose her teaching license due to this. Once again I am a 5th grader in this class. I’m tired of people like this school board member that think we don’t understand what’s happening around us, especially in this day and age. Thank you.

I’m trying to take all perspectives into account but I’m a Christian. As someone who believes in the Bible, I understand why parents are upset. If my child was in that class I’d be upset. in 5th grade I wasn’t thinking about boys, sexuality should be introduced as you get older and as questions are asked. This isn’t “anti LGBTQ” it’s about the children. Parents are the only ones who should teach about this.

Then show the Disney movie Song of The South to a class and see if the liberals allow that. If they can show Strange Worlds to a kids class then they should be able to show the Disney film Song of the South too.

I feel like both should be watched in a class. Strange Worlds because, to be honest, looks like a B list Disney movie with a an Interesting environment, and Song of the South because it teaches about false and conflicting stereotype of that era. I think one of them, Song of the South obvi, should take account the age show it. Is it being screened to showcase how wonderful and perfect it is with absolutely no problems with its depictions...or to have an open and honest discussion about those portrayals and what they say about the movie's production team, as well as society as a whole at the time? I actually really wish it would get a proper release so that we actually can discuss and analyze it in its proper context, because it is such a mixed bag of issues that's well worth an academic deep dive into.

I was a teacher for 33 years. Things have changed so much that I don’t hesitate to tell you: run away from it as fast as you can. There are plenty of other jobs out there that won’t destroy your faith in humanity.
Many teachers are leaving rather than “Affirm” in MN affirming is the same as mandated Reporting. To not affirm a questioning adolescent can bring charges. A child’s parent that won’t affirm, the child can be removed from the home immediately. This is new MN state law. If your kids are in a MN public school, you need to be close to the teacher, and questioning what that school is doing about the issue, don’t get blind sided one day when Sarah comes home and says she thinks she’s a boy….

I graduated high school in 97 in Canada. We had many gay & bi individuals in my school. It wasn’t a big deal, more avoided then hated. Everyone was just able to be who they were.

When I was in Jr high (97), I was like you. I don't remember anyone being gay or bi, only because they just didn't stick out.
I think history has a habit of repeating itself, every 50yrs or so. Now seems to be that time for the gay rights movement. However it's opened up to more than just "gay," we now have the LGBTQ+ community. And just like the movement back then, people in power and politics are trying to stop them.

Not just Math, Science, English, etc. Providing students with “tools” to understand themselves and the world around them allows them to make informed decisions about the type of person they will develop into later in life. We hope they will learn ways to manage their emotions when frustrated, identify and take appropriate action if they are being harmed or observe someone else being harmed or bullied. During the pandemic, parents did their best to continue educating their children. That was the correct action to take since some schools were closed. But children missed out on engagement with other people (staff, administrators, children, classmates). They missed out on access to research based social emotional training that credentialed teachers provide in the classrooms. Based on your state or any “concerned” parents respective state, if you look at your version of the California Common Core Standards, teachers are teaching those components.
I work with post-secondary students and wonder what will happen to the children from families who, at best, out of love and concern, or at worst, ignorance, push for their children to be educated in environments without diverse view points. At the post secondary level, these children will be competing with other young people GLOBALLY. Children who were educated in diverse learning environments, children who received socio-emotional training and know how to work with global partners to earn a good living.
It’s fine for parents to explain and model healthy values and expectations for their children. And when children are exposed to diversity in school, libraries, camp, etc. for parents to talk to their children about those different viewpoints. Young people have the internet now, so censoring educators is not logical. Young people will find ways to educate themselves. It is the role of credentialed educators and parents to structure their learning in meaningful ways. Allow the child to observe their own feelings and talk about what they think.

I'm a teacher for over 12 years and I had students tell me about their two moms, I had a student tell me she wanted to be called a boy's name and pronoun, and I had a student talk to me about being bisexual. These kids are talking to me about things that they are curious about and I didn't open any doors, they did. This generation of kids are more aware of the world around them than we give them credit for. Maybe kids are more comfortable talking to teachers about things like this since many come from homes with parents like that lady. I feel sad for them to hide their questions and outraged that teachers are being extremely micromanaged in a field where we aren't treated like the educated professionals we are.
I think that's different. If you are just the type of teacher that a kid feels comfortable confiding in that's different than introducing sexual topics to children. It's not that they are not be credit for what they know it's the encouraging of certain things behind parents back. If I send my kid to school and you send me a report card of not my child's name as a parent you will be bothered by that. Overall point when teachers engage in these conversations when do they try and link the child back to there parents. 80s baby kids were talking about sex but they were not bringing it up to adults because it was something said that shouldn't be engaging in.

The problem is that nobody wants to talk about LGBTQ for what it is from a purely clinical perspective. As gay and trans represent a minute percentage of the population, we must acknowledge that it is a biological abnormality. As such, birth defects come in many forms, but children should be taught to understand that, yet still accepting of people for who they are.
The problem with Hollywood, is that they are force feeding the public with gay and trans characters as though it were normal-which it is not. Understanding the biological reality and accepting that reality are quite different, but we can do both. Certainly, our educational system should be allowed to confront that reality.
You and most teachers are Not qualified to handle these issues. Teachers teach and parents parent, prepare the kids to work, go to college or get a trade, nothing more.

I am one of the 25 students in this teachers class, we had just finished standardized testing for science and my teacher, who believes in magic and how energy can heal, decided to play this movie because it was relevant to what we were learning. The 2 minutes of this movie that showed anything gay was mostly just one of the characters being shy around the other. Both of these characters were male. While we were watching to movie we had part of another class in our room because their teacher was busy and couldn’t teach. One of these students was a school board members daughter and told her mom about the movie. Another reason that the mother was mad was because the gay character in the movie was also biracial. I believe that this woman was being racist and homophobic and was overusing her power as a school board member. Not only this, but many students in our grade, including myself, have come out as gay to our teachers and friends at our school. There is no way that this was a topic their child wasn’t fully aware of. I just wanted to shed some light on this subject, my teacher may lose her teaching license due to this. Once again I am a 5th grader in this class. I’m tired of people like this school board member that think we don’t understand what’s happening around us, especially in this day and age. Thank you.

I’m trying to take all perspectives into account but I’m a Christian. As someone who believes in the Bible, I understand why parents are upset. If my child was in that class I’d be upset. in 5th grade I wasn’t thinking about boys, sexuality should be introduced as you get older and as questions are asked. This isn’t “anti LGBTQ” it’s about the children. Parents are the only ones who should teach about this.
Of course not because that’s what is seen daily in my household. My morals are different than yours, I’m teaching my kids what I know is right.

Speaking of outrage by liberals over a teacher getting in trouble for showing the Disney movie Strange Worlds to her class in Florida. Then show the Disney movie Song of The South to a class and see if the liberals allow that. If they can show Strange Worlds to a kids class then they should be able to show the Disney film Song of the South too.
One is blatantly racist, spending the entire film reinforcing harmful reconstruction era stereotypes, the other shows about 10 seconds of LGBT characters flirting.
I feel like both should be watched in a class. Strange Worlds because, to be honest, looks like a B list Disney movie with a an Interesting environment, and Song of the South because it teaches about false and conflicting stereotype of that era. I think one of them, Song of the South obvi, should take account the age show it. I mean I finally saw the film my senior year in college for a class, and me and all the other black students weren’t offended, maybe eye-rolling, but not that offended. Strange Worlds.....the character is a "side character", whatever flirting he is doing is off to the side, so it is BARELY harmful to the students who is mostly are trying to follow the story in general, which looks way more outlandish.
Is it being screened to showcase how wonderful and perfect it is with absolutely no problems with its depictions...or to have an open and honest discussion about those portrayals and what they say about the movie's production team, as well as society as a whole at the time?
I actually really wish it would get a proper release so that we actually can discuss and analyze it in its proper context, because it is such a mixed bag of issues that's well worth an academic deep dive into.
