    This is currently my favorite channel in this community. A lot of the other creators just copy/paste the same “top 10” lists over over and have no original thoughts. The conversational format brings something new and refreshing to this niche.

      @@BaldassarreFragrance I think that you're both right on track with your style. Definitely some DNA from Teddy's watch channel but also the exploration of the collective sensory experience of something less quantifiable as the sensations of a scent. Very cool dynamic, especially when one of you has encountered the scent before and the other hasn't. It's a great way to gauge how others may react to a scent if we choose to try it out. Looking forward to seeing your channel continue to grow!

    To be honest I expected the response to Azzaro Pour Homme. The vast majority of under 30 year olds have no history or experience with fragrances produced before the mid-90s. Their olfactory landscape begins with Le Male, Boss Bottled, Allure Homme Sport through to more modern fragrance DNAs such as La Nuit de L’Homme and Bleu de Chanel etc. All fantastic scents that I own. But most younger peoples noses are only attuned to either fresh, marine, aquatic smells or sweet, tonka bean/vanilla affairs occasionally laden with some spices.
    The older arena of mens fragrances that veer towards fougeres and chypres are simply from another time for them. And I agree many do feel a little dated. Or at least ‘out of time’. But many of these classics such as Azzaro PH, Kouros, Eau Sauvage, Paco Rabbane Pour Homme to name just a few are legends of perfumery. They hark to a different era for sure but are masterpieces of technical perfumery. Beautifully constructed, dense and intriguing in their own way. Many in my opinion are far more interesting than the endless streams of Sauvage-like clones.
    It does take some effort to take your nose down this more vintage path if you’re only raised on fragrance post the year 2005. But it’s a journey worth undertaking even if only to understand the history of perfumery from the last century to now.
    For what it’s worth Azzaro always smells poor on paper. It needs a few sprays to the chest and a crisp shirt tucked in over the top. The heat from the body interacts with it so well and creates a subtle scent cloud that softens some of the more upfront notes like the anise. The fresh/spicy accord really comes through if worn this way. At least it does on me.
    Loving your channel and eagerly await more content.

    The frequent mention of 'slap in the face' had me visualizing what actually happens in a barber shop with warm towels & after shave on skin ;D Another entertaining and informative commentary of classic fougere with a few twists, a scent profile which has taken a backseat to the over-hyped saccharine bubblegum note of the present.

    LOVE the barbershop theme. This happens to be one of my favorite styles of fragrance. I think you should do a follow-up and include Authenticity Perfumes Barbershop and Happyland Barbershop. One goes the shaving cream route while the other goes more classic Fougere. Also, as many have mentioned below, I would LOVE a series created around different scent profiles/types.

    i love the aesthetics here! on dark background bottles rotating, it's nice! Also yeah Russian leather and colonia club are not fougere technically but i 'm glad u mentioned that. i love TF BDJ a lot as general and as a modern fougere. Had been trying to put my nose on burning barbershop for a while. hopefully soon. Also i like quite a few old school fougeres . Try a very affordable one if u like. Bogart edt classic. Still smells great.

    I watch these vids to get new ideas and I've added Russian Leather to my wishlist as I was not familiar. As far as reactions, it's funny to think that age has an impact on liking/not liking scent but it does. On this list I have TF BDJ and Azzaro Pour Homme. While APH isn't one of my favorites that I own, her reaction actually made me laugh because I think it's a completely non offensive scent, but clearly it was to her. A lot of newer fragrances are heavy ambroxian which is a pass for me, but it's a note that young people seem to love. Good news is, there is no right or wrong when it comes to fragrances.

    I'll admit I wasn't brave enough to try Burning Barbershop when I ordered my 4 samples of DS Durga the other day, but now I'm intrigued. On the other hand I did smell "by the fireplace" yesterday and didn't love it. So since I'm new to this game, how important is packaging/bottle design to either you guys or the community at large? It seems more important than the box my watches come in, but I could see the argument of "Who cares?" However to me it is a factor since I'm going to be looking at them on my dresser every morning.

    Hi. I just tried the Tom Ford today because of this video and I really like it. I tried the Maison Margiela At the Barber Shop a few years and was disappointed with the performance. I am going to order a sample of the Russian Leather. If I end up liking the Memo Paris Russian Leather would it be redundant to both that and the Tom Ford Beau de Jour? Also when is the best time of day and season for these fragrances? I enjoy your videos and look forward to seeing them.

  • @JT-rx1eo
    @JT-rx1eo 2 года назад +9

    Tom Ford Beau de Jour is by far my favorite "barbershop" Fougere, and I have a huge collection of the genre. It is the most beautiful of all in my collection, which includes the likes of MDCI Invasion Barbare, Tom Ford Fougere D'Argent and Fougere Platine, Penhaligon Sartorial, Penhaligon The Tragedy of Lord George, Davidoff Zino, YSL Rive Gauche Pour Homme, and many more. The lavender, amber, and especially the aromatics, and again especially the mint. It does smell like shaving foam breaking out in billowy clouds on my face. It is at once modern sweet and evocative of vintage classic barbershop Fougeres. It brings to my mind getting a shave at a barbershop in the 1890's, complete with a barbershop quartet performing while the town dandy gents, with their handlebar mustaches, patiently read newspapers waiting their turn. With maybe a Gay '90's soda fountain next door selling lavender and mint milkshakes, 1890's style. There are actually lavender and lavindin notes in Beau de Jour. Two kinds of lavender to give it a more interesting and rich aromatic appeal. Lavindin is essentially a hybrid of English lavender and Portuguese lavender, which offers some aromatic twists, such as a more camphorous accord. This is reportedly Tom Ford's personal signature scent, and was inspired by Cary Grant, according to Ford.
    I have all the frags you covered except AdP Colonia Club and Russian Leather. I think Maison Martin Margiela Replica At the Barbers is too metallic, sort of along the lines of Chanel Platinum Egoiste, CK Eternity for Men, and Abercrombie and Fitch Fierce. I don't think it is a particularly good representation of the genre. And my idea of a "dated" fragrance is different. "Dated" is actually an asset to me. Good art and fragrances tend to be timeless, and "dated" means essentially that it is olfactory history, like an olfactive vintage photo. Its living history, which adds interest and appeal. So I like Azzaro Pour Homme (1978). I actually think it may be the most representational of the genre, even more so than YSL Rive Gauche Pour Homme. But Beau de Jour is the best and most beautiful to me.
    Very nice treatment of the topic in this video. Much better than the "reviews" these knucklehead young non-fraghead general public kids you've been featuring do.

      @@fougere7Yes I've tried Roja Scandal. It's pretty good, but different from Beau de Jour. I have a bottle of Roja Danger on the way, which I think may be even more of a fougere than Scandal.

    • @fougere7
      @fougere7 2 месяца назад

      @@JT-rx1eo I sampled Danger Cologne, Danger Pour Homme, Scandal Cologne and Scandal Pour Homme and from these the most fougere is Scandal Pour Homme. TF Beau de Jour for the win… nothing else in its class for my nose… I like to wear it on the shirt I’m sleeping in to enjoy it as I doze off.. I’m curious about Russian Leather, however..

    I see these barbershop fragrance videos all the time, and none of them ever review Pinaud Clubman. However, it literally is THE barbershop fragrance. Pinaud got their start in barbershops back in the 1890s, and in 1940 their U.S. division created Pinaud Clubman. Their parent company back in France didn't want it advertised, because they thought that doing so would cheapen their high end women's perfumes. So, the U.S. division just pushed it really hard in the barbershops, and they completely dominated the barbershop market in the 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s. When you went to the barber and got a hot towel shave THIS is what he applied as an aftershave. When you got a haircut he also applied talc that had the same scent. Pinaud Clubman is an aftershave, but it is really strong. Barbers would often cut it with witch hazel because it was so strong. I grew up watching detective TV shows and movies, so JJ (Jake) Gittes from Chinatown, Paul Drake from Perry Mason, Peter Gunn, Manix, Jim Rockford... they all smelled like Pinaud Clubman. It is just what all guys from the 40s through the early 70s smelled like. It also MUST be the barbershop fragrance against what all others are compared.

    Azzaro is incredible. Obviously if you don't like the smell of anise, you wouldn't like it because it's the star of the show.

    Warmer, spicier (clove) version of BDJ: Amouage Bracken Man. One of my favourites. I own both. BDJ definitely gives you that creamy shaving foam smell which I love. But more cold, icy. Amouage warms you up. Similar but different enough (especially as you get to know them both over time.

    A good part two of this would be modern fougeres or the most unique barbershops that dont SCREAM barbershop. I think to most people all barbershop frags smell the same.
