Why doesn't a car freeze under the carport?

  • We have the first frost, about -2 °C, and the car is frozen. But the other car, which was parked open under the carport, is not. How does that happen?
    The car under the carport freezes less because the carport roof reduces the heat radiation from the vehicle into the cold night sky. This keeps the temperature of the car windows closer to the ambient temperature and less condensation forms, which could then freeze.
    The greenhouse effect works in a similar way. Here, greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and water vapor cause heat to radiate unhindered from the earth's surface back into space. If we didn't have greenhouse gases, the average earth's surface temperature would be about -15 °C. But even a completely normal cloud cover prevents heat radiation into space. But if there are no clouds, it can get pretty cold in winter. Observe the temperature difference in winter when the sky is clear compared to when the sky is cloudy.
