👏THIS 👏FREAKING 👏GUY I knew I had to check out Lou Harrison after hearing about his American Gamelan work and also just how he's related to the other great composers of the time, but I didn't expect this to be such a coalesce of everything that I absolutely adore in music! And the freaking ESPERANTO!
Wish I had met him....he was around when I was in college...and after all that time, I now make instruments from my ancient Mexican heritage...but it was music like Lou Harrison, Harry Partch later UAKTI and stayed in my memory and I'm sure it influenced me to follow my path....beautiful work this is. People look up a composer from Mexico that hardly anyone knows, Julian Carrillo, who back in 1895 started to experiment with 13 tones (before Arnold!!!) forming his SONIDO 13 (The 13th Sound)...he made his own crazy microtonal instruments too! Listen to "Balbuceos"! I love this work of Lou Harrison, absolutely spell binding!!!!
I just read about this man in Elsa Gidlow's autobiography, Elsa: I Come With My Songs, and so decided to find some of his music to listen to. It is utterly beautiful marvelously blending aspects of Western and Eastern music in a most brilliantly heart-touching way.

This piece was written for and premiered at an international Esperanto congress held in San Francisco, at the request of leading local Esperantist Cathy Schulze. The premiere took place at San Francisco State University. This piece features what Harrison called his American Gamelan, an ensemble of percussion instruments that Harrison built himself with his partner Bill Colvig, tuned in just intonation.
The music of Lou Harrison will be presented at the Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley on Wednesday May 10. No charge but arrive about 6:30 for the 7 pm show since hundreds will be there. bampfa.org for details
Sublime...I found this piece after reading..hearing that,Joel Singer had played this piece for his brother lover,James Broughton during his last moments of passing.James has also written a lovely tribute poem for,Lou...that appears in his anthology of poetry...Packing Up For Paradise.This piece of music will always hold a special place in my heart as a lover of the life and ART of Mr Broughton🌈

A monophonic recording of this performance is held by the GLBT Historical Society of San Francisco in the Elsa Gidlow archives. I just digitized it.
