- Mumbai food has it all - restaurants, street food, healthy food, thalis and so much more. But lets talk about the places that made Mumbai food what it is today. And thats why Im sharing with you this century old institution in Mumbai that has been dishing out vada pav, misal pav, thalipeeth, puri bhaji and so many more authentic maharashtrian dishes. Im talking about Mama Kane and this is located in Dadar W in Mumbai.
Mama Kane is a hidden gem in Mumbai. Its a 112 year old place for authentic maharashtrian food and snacks. And beautifully combines the flavours from Mumbai street food and homestyle Maharashtrian food. I highly recommend that you visit.

This is my first view of Alkaji's blog. Enjoyed every bit of Mama Kane. I lived in Bombay for six years and was a frequent visitor to this legendary eatery in Dadar. Thanks for the nostalgia

Alka ji, a much needed video. Mama Kane is actually an institution by now and not just a restaurant. In an old Marathi film I saw in childhood - Gulacha Ganapati, I think- this hotel appears in an important way.
Unfortunately, I haven't had an opportunity to visit the place.
As you take a bite of the batata wada, your face lights up and your approval of the item clearly shows up in a very lovable way.
Kharwas is a very seasonal item. But hotels sell it as a regular item all the year round! I'm told that kharwas is made of china grass! Of course, I don't know about Mama Kane.

I regularly visit mama Kane whenever I travel to Dadar . Their बटाटावडा and Misal is very famous. People come here to eat बटाटावडा. The restaurant is very specious and clean. Poori lunch is also good.

Its indeed a very Nostalgic feeling for me because I have stayed in Dadar for around 15 years and Prakash, Aswaad hotels which I used to visit regularly and Batata vada, Lassi centres though i cant recollect the name, Dadar was and is a food heaven for all Vegetarian friends. Many Thanks Alka.

Dear sister I used to visit Mamakane in 80s regularly when I go to institute in Dadar. When I visited 5 years back the quality and the taste was not their. Regarding this I informed the owner of the hotel management.

Very good of you to have informed the management and to post it here. But as times have changed, generation has also changed and integrity values also change. Hence , it is not always possible for young generation to maintain the same taste as before. So while the place is the same with same menu , taste quality level matches present generation.

Madam, Mama Kane was never for VadaPav. It was always Batata Vada with sukhi lal chatney, Sabudana Vada, Alu Vadi and Shakahari Thali was most prominent on the menu. The mantra you are chanting of VadaPav was much much later. It was in mid seventies when Shivsena became a reality the great Balasaheb introduced Shivsainiks perticularly from Dadar's Khandke Buildings no 1, 2, 3 and so on to sell BatataVada with Pav for people returning from offices in Churchgate who used to stop and have VadaPav with lal sukhi chatney. Shivsainiks mother or sisters will make hot vada's and send down at the corner of the galli. Thus, the Shivsainiks had income as the sainiks were unemployed and worked for Sena as and when required. The Pav was available at pavwalas. This clicked and it spread to other suburbs of Mumbai. And then because of popularity it spread like wildfire all over. Later years it was introduced in Mama Kane and similar old eateries in Mumbai. In our college days we have enjoyed only big BatataVada with lal tikhat chatney. That tikhat lasanachi chatney was the punch giver and heady. Please don't TomTom VadaPav VadaPav it kills peculiarity of the most testy item BatataVada. Pav was addition to fill the stomach till they get their dinner -Jevan. TomTom ing VadaPav you are killing the tasty BatataVada and giving importance to Pav which is nonentity. Please. As Gujarat's Dabeli is popular all over Maharashtra your VadaPav is popular in Gujarat and elsewhere. There was another heady snak KandaBhaji aka Khekdabhaji. They are available in Mumbai and Pune prominently. Earlier days Khekdabhaji making was known to few people. It is dry and kurkurit. In monsoon season these Khekdabhaji were heady.

50 years ago their Batawada and lunch was very popular.
It's not Batawada it besanwada now and Brahmani style lunch is gone.
Misal which popular then is now un palatable. Now it's all bullshit.

Wada pav is now not so tasty, as it used to be in our college time 40 yrs back, it is crowded because, now only in Dakar 2 traditional places are remained that is MAMA KANE and PRAKASH

@@explorewithalka My inlaws family home is dadar birth place of all our ancestors , so I feel aaswad is little on the modern side, whereas Prakash and mama kaane is truly traditional, infact Prakash is very much truly maharashtrian, there are also many malvani fish restaurants in that vicinity but jai hind at shaitan chowky is the best.
