- One of the living legends of Jazz Piano, Makoto Ozone.
I saw this piece on TV by chance in the States over a decade ago. It totally mesmerized me and have been spellbound ever since.
Just see for yourself how fantastic and gripping this performance is.
What is amazing is that It is mostly improvised.
*All credits due to the musician Makoto Ozone. Poster does not claim any intellectual property rights of this video.
*Makoto Ozone* is one of the most melodic improvisers I've ever heard.
I hear an influence here from Chick Corea. Great musician!
tremendous piano playing!!! wow!!
I have been a huge Makoto fan ever since I saw him with Gary Burton in Atlanta in the early 1980's. This is just one of the many jaw-dropping live performances from him I have seen, and it also stirs my musical soul very deeply. Over the last 25 years i have collected all his recordings and he never dissapoints I wish he would come back to the USA, I would travel to see him live again.
Thanks for posting this, I can watch it over and over and it each time I have to say "Wow".
great style of perfect blend of classical and jazz
holy shit how did I have not heard about this genius until now???!
Jazz is a type of music that one has to look for or stumble across I think.
Ozone is still active at age well over 60 now. Still swinging!
Interesting blend of classical, jazz and improv. Worth a serious listen for sure.
I was brimming on estatic. Unheard of, stupendous, original !!
Simply breath taking. Thx for posting!
I've always liked his early years ever since I fist time listend to his album, "Break Out". His pieces always have beautiful melody lines and not too complicated, and that's why his piano always comes straight into my heart. I often find myself forgetting to breath when I am listning to his piano. This piece, I have never listened before, just tears my eyes. Noble, solitude, sublimity, and passionate piano he plays. Thank you so much for this.
He must have been about this age when I used to listen to him and GB at the Regattabar in Cambridge. He was stunning back then - incredible talent.
There's a bit of a Spanish tinge in the melody. It sounds like a jazzy Granados to me.
Saw this performance on BET Jazz over 30 years ago!!!!
"TRULY MAGNIFICENT"
cutely dark and extremely beautiful.
fantastic!!!!
Love this guy!
Would love to see this transcribed. Any chance of that Mr. Gondola?
4 years, 6 years, 8 years on the comments. Well, I comment at 0 years. I am embarrassed to say I have never heard of Ozone before. He is incredible! Thanks to fastballonly if you're still around.
This might be from the same concert as the video I posted (with Gary Burton) ~ I think he's wearing the same shirt! For him, that was obviously an amazing night of creativity! Thanks for posting!! :D
Beautiful, and techniclly eloquoquent.. Hopefully I can use this or another piece of your suggestion for part 3 of a quotes video.. look forward to your knowledgeable selections..
stunning!
Thank you very much for your recommendation, that piece is really beautiful. Congratulations because you heard live "Nature Boy". Hugs
Very interesting "ensemble". Quite pleasant to listen to.
In case the viewers of this video read this, Makoto Ozone has been livestreaming every night since the lockdown.
Check him out on facebook. Search Makoto Ozone and it is all there. Even the ones you have missed. Thanks.
小曽根さん、若い!

Thanks for your comment.
Really? I am not savvy on classical music. But Ozone's mother was a classical piano teacher and his father a jazz pianist. He had some classical training in his youth for sure.
And some years ago he released a Chopin album with a Polish singer. That was quite mesmerizing, too.
Thanks for your comment. So nice to come across an ardent Ozone fan like yourself.
I have been his long-time fan and I also have all his works in my library, including the DVD's. He is simply outstanding!
From what I know, he makes his home in both NY city and western Japan.
He is a Bucley graduate and I'm sure he does tours in the US.
I would love to hear "Nature Boy" with the awesome piano of Makoto Ozone. Thanks a lot.
@cavolossss Prego. Grazie per il tuo commento. Sono felice di conoscere questa musica appelli per un italiano.
@TullMorse Thanks for your comment. Quite likely that you have some videos from the same concert especially if he is dressed in this shirt. This seems like a perfect attire for cleaning the house or something.
But, obviously the performance is outstanding.
I am glad you like it.
3 missed lyk button!!
@nalcow Thanks for your comment. I hope you liked this piece.
Ozone was heavily influenced by Oscar Peterson when he was like 4 or 5.
That is why he his technique has the precision of a metronome.
Chick Corea on the other hand I am sure posed some influence on him as well after Makoto was already an established pianist.
Ozone-san!
Subarashikata! wolf175/wolf1750 in Kyoto
His name is Makoto Ozone. A Japanese jazz pianist.
There is no title for this piece, as it says in the title of the video. Also Ozone himself says it in the beginning.
I wish it was available in a CD, but it is not.
If you get a chance to see his solo performance, by all means record it and upload it for us please.
yes... quite a bit chic corea influenced...
@mollegiante I see that you are a pianist yourself. Do you think you can copy this piece by Ozone and post it? I play a little bit and tried before, but could not get past the first minute. Of course I was not even close to reproducing his performance anyway.
Thanks for your post.
This Makotos thing , how is name today ?
@fastballonly I would love to! I admire Ozone so much. But since transcribing is a lot of work and I have so many projects up right now I have to say "no".
Thanks for your comment. If you get a chance at all to see his live performance, please do check it out. As seen in this video, his improvisation skill really shines at live more than his recordings.
Thanks for your comment. This piece is my best favorite, at this time no other piece of Ozone's work has impressed me more than this "untitled" work.
In my opinion, Makoto shines the most in solo performance because of he sounds so orchestral on his own.
I would suggest the album "Breakout". It is an all-solo album.
Also "flight" from his first album is breathtaking as well. You can easily find it on youtube.
Real work of art, isn't it?
Thanks for your comment.
Impressive skill. A bit of dynamic and temporal variation might have made for a more enjoyable listen, though.
Thanks for your post.
I saw "Nature boy" live a long time ago. It was much better than the recording, as per usual.
Here is a recommendation for you.
It is called "flight" from his first album.

I hope you like it. It is a beautiful solo.
I am glad you liked "flight" as well.
I still remember the live "nature boy" which is years ago. He always shines at his live performance.
If you like his solo pieces, I'd recommend his album called Breakout.
I found a link on youtube.

Who is the name of this composition , please?
Bring the best classical pianist in the world, and they will look like an amateur compared to this guy!!
The Main melody Sounds persian
Beqa Gochiashvili is much much better.he is georgian
