Man, you are bringing back memories for me.... I learned to tape and bed while I was a painter in the Air Force circa 1968, stationed in a long since closed base, Perrin AFB, in Northern Texas. Watching your vids, you are a pro and good man.
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY You're quite welcome, Guy. Back then , we mixed up mud from a bag, by hand, in 5 gallon buckets and used paper tape for everything, including inside and outside corners by folding it down the middle. And for the finish, we thinned out the same mud and put it on with a roller and left a stipple effect. I've used the skills I acquired multiple times in the ensuiing decades and still enjoy doing this. Keep up the good work..(thumbs up to you)
I actually first did drywall in 1969, when I was 8. My dad put me on stilts to spot nails on the walls. Then I was doing it every summer when in my early teens, every day after school in high school, (once I had a license) and every summer etc. I do remember mixing by hand too.
I buy it and work with it and learn is it a fit or not. The one trowl I never got the hang of is the curved one for tapping. Maybe now I know how to sling mud I should try it again. I just posted on a handyman channel a vid I made why I like using a hawk in many applications and showed loading and working with it and how we can control the mud and how you can get exactly what you want on your knife or trowl. Its funny years back I could have never made a vid like that. I was more in the mud everywhere but the wall Lol.
Finishing drywall takes many years to get decent at. New construction is easy compared to repairing holes and other damage. But sounds like you're getting the hang of it. Cool. Glad I can help. I have SOO many video ideas, or videos I've shot, that will help you all more, but no energy to edit them as this vertigo is making my life hell. Editing is the hard part and can take 5-10 hours, per video, and that's hard right now when I have to sleep or nap till noon, then work 5-6 hours, then more resting or napping for hours, then 'maybe' I'll have energy around 9pm. But I'm doing the best I can.
The only thing I am confused about is rust on my knives. I have to sand off the rust every time. I am missing someway to prevent this. They are blued when I first buy them. They pull on the mud making it look lumpy.
In my new e-book I will explain things like, anything but stainless steel will rust. But all I do is wash it off unless it got real heavy and then I sand it. But nine times out of 10 you can just wash it. I’ve never worried about it, but if you want to avoid it, after you clean your tools, leave them as dry as possible or wipe them with a rag. I’ve heard some people say they put a light coat of WD-40 on it but I don’t want that getting into my drywall mud so I wouldn’t do it myself.
I took it down as my illness prevented me from finishing on time, but it will be back in a few months I hope. I'm finally starting to feel a little better so working on catching up on a lot of stuff. It will be in my store at www.thatkiltedguystore.com
I just followed the link above to purchase the ebook you spoke of in the video and it said it was only 30% complete. Please excuse me for not knowing, but is that "30% complete" warning meant for at the time of this video was recorded (2019) or now (2022)? I signed up to be notified when it could be purchased, but has that date already passed?
Well what happened is I’ve had about three years of bad health including two years of long Covid, cancer, inner ear nerve damage etc and it has made it extremely difficult to finish it. But I am actually 1 to 2 days away from beginning to finish it off and hope to have it complete in a few weeks-30 days
Happy to help Tony Chavarria, Thanks for subscribing and for helping me hit the 100,000 subscriber mark by my birthday on June 10th, 2021. I truly appreciate it. Guy
Someone said I was talking with they used finishing mud for tapping. What is your word on that? I am under the idea that it does not have as much glue in it. The guy said it makes tapping easer.
I hear guys talk like that, but easy doesn't mean good. I would absolutely NOT use topping mud for taping. ONLY hot mud, all purpose or taping mud should be used for taping. That kind of work is what falls apart down the road.

Do you have a video on how to skim coat concrete walls let me know thanks
I've never done that, so no, I don't have one. I think bonding would be the issue, so not sure how to address that. Thanks for asking though.
