F, Thank you for pointing out Überzugpp, drop in replacements are the best. Sixel is great but sadly they don't work in tmux, there are plenty of forks that implement this, but it seems that the main maintainer is not intersted.
Kitty is a great terminal. The best thing is its built-in themes accessed through the kitten extension. I look forward to your video on it! Despite that, I recently (a couple of days ago) noticed a few quirks of Kitty + Ranger. When you scroll through images or videos in Ranger, the borders (if enabled) will disappear and then reappear after a second. And when selecting an image, if you type 'r' for 'open_with', the pop-up menu will also disappear and possibly make Kitty hang. I believe this has something to do with Kitty's image rendering, and has (so far as I can tell) no workaround. I guess that's the price we pay for wanting images in a terminal!
Kitty might be pretty good But wezterm has all the same features, and more It's written in rust, gpu-enhanced, Supports imgcat just like kitty does, has an integrated ssh client that allows for things otherwise only available when using tmux, it's got a built-in serial monitor (great if you do Arduino programming), you can attach/detatch from a session just like tmux, It has a built-in status bar and a fuzzy search menu system It's practically got tmux reimplemented at this point The best thing is, it's configured in lua, so instead of learning the kitty config language, you can use what you already know from using awesomeWM/neovim/xplr/tym/luakit(and probably more)
wezterm is my favorite terminal and has compatibility with the "kitty +kitten icat" installed on the other terminal, plus in my opinion it is faster and is made in rust:).
Hi Eric !! Not long ago, I had to reinstall the entire system. When reinstalling lf, I encountered this problem. I have kitty installed... Thank you for your help.. Cheers from Chile 👍👍👍
Its such a shame indeed. I only use Tilix for terminal with Ubuntu, and the options to display images with Neofetch are only ascii, caca, chafa, jp2a, iterm2, pot, termpix, pixterm, tycat, w3m, kitty... chafa will open the image all distorted, w3m will show no image at all... I wonder if Tilix is working to fix this?
Don't worry about the pronunciation of "Überzug". The word seems totally unrelated to the project, as it means "coating" or "cover". The same goes for "Herbstluftwm", the window manager, which means “autumn wind” and seems equally unrelated to what the project is all about.
@@EricMurphyxyz I'd say if you have simple needs w3m does the job very well. If you just want to see some pictures in your terminal and maybe set a wallpaper or move stuff around, its more than good. There is also vv which uses sixel but I never bothered to integrate it to lf
Thank you for this update. I really appreciate it. I was always wondering - Is there a way to have video previews inside the terminal? I guess it could be implemented if it's possible to have image previews, as say, multiple images a second or something like that. Is it even theoretically possible and are there any people that are working on it? Keep up the great work.
Can you give a Begginer to Advance guide to choose the right linux distro for programming + development stuff and the process to customize it ? like using a custom WM +custom fonts + custom bar etc .
"Indian Luke Smith" xD

Interesting. I wonder if it's an issue with kitty or with ranger?

@@AnalyticMindedcurious what ur thoughts were about westerm? I’ve been running wezterm only because i know lua pretty well :p
Amazing explanation. I was totally lost in this topic. Thank you very much!
that wild Luke Smith was so funny XD

Definitely want to check this terminal out too!
Its extremely extensible, also uses lua so much more useable than many conf files
Great vid, you explained many things that I was wondering about

Glad it helped!
So long and thanks for all the fish.
Thanks Eric, I am still using ueberzug but will go with pp version now.
i like kitty + yazi, yazi displays images without any extra config
Indian luke smith really got me😂
Thanks Eric will need to get kitty working with ncmpcpp for albumart.
Sad sixels are so unsupported still, especially if you use termina multiplexer
that indian luke smith joke made me laugh
"Indian Luke Smith" bugs sure is famous tho 😊
Dang. I was going to play around with LF this weekend just to find out the preview app is already deadmeat. Oh well
I use the foot terminal and the yazi file manager. Images just work out of the box.
ctpv or stpv is a great script to preview files and images in lf
It automaticaly choose correct applications to use for previewing
No more hot wifus in the terminal
Thanks. This is helpful.
Uberzug with vifm works perfect in Sway/Wayland-Alacritty. Version 18.1.9 in the Debian repo (Bookworm)

the programe uses a layer on top of your terminal to display the image on xorg, so it is a coating or a cover, it seems like the prefect name for it
wait herbsluft had a meaning? i never knew
never knew that Chafa could use Sixel
The more you know
hey eric, can you please to a more in depth for the previewer? please I copied over your config files but I still cant get the preview stuff to work.
Ok, i cant use ueberzug then, what a shame
w3m works in every terminal and doesnt seem to be going anywhere. I use w3m in lf/ranger in xterm and st.
Is it fairly buggy or not? I remember that being the reason why people switched to using ueberzug instead years ago
@@EricMurphyxyz I'd say if you have simple needs w3m does the job very well. If you just want to see some pictures in your terminal and maybe set a wallpaper or move stuff around, its more than good.

Why delete everything? Why not just archive it and let people fork it?
Kitty is purr-fect!

I think it's possible. I know mpv can output in both kitty and sixel formats. With a bit of scripting it might be possible, but I've never tried it.
@@EricMurphyxyz Thank you, will try it definitely.
@Humble Tyler I've never heard of that. Will definitely look it up. Thanks!
@@justalunartic Is there a specific place I could read a bit more about it? And maybe even see it?
Thanks for the suggestion.
mpv --vo=sixel $f
try this in your terminal, where $f is a path to the file.
you will see that SIXEL wasn't made to play videos. @@vukanoa

Does youtube delete comments with link? I also can recommend tool at NikitaIvanovV/ctpv repo. It's easy to setup and working fine with LF
Yeah, no links allowed. That tool looks pretty cool though, it's basically an all-in-one solution for lf
