Wow this really is the best overview of this little DC volt/ammeter. Above and beyond, man. You even measured the dimensions (there are tons of schematics out there but are vague on where they are measuring).

Amazing content. I designed an enclosure that used this module before I ever had a chance to play around with it. When it arrived, I had no idea what I was doing, now I do, and I don't have to 3D print another enclosure!

  • @MatSmithLondon

If you are 3D printing, I have found that the cutout needs to be 26.8 x 45.4 (thickness of 2.5mm worked well for me) - I also chamfered the inside cutout by 1mm or so. Hope that helps

One thing you did not mention was how to zero current meter.
These meters do not read negative current.
I had one of these units which had a bad zero! i.e. It needed about 1 amp to before the meter started to read. If you had 2 Amp then meter read 1.00 Amp i.e. 1 amp zero error.
    1. To fix this link the 2 pads just above the main chip where it says ADJ-Z (see 15:42).
    2. Apply power to meter for 1 second.
    3. Remove link and re-power meter
This zeros current meter and meter then measures current correctly.
BTW your zero was OK so you did not need to adjust zero.

    Dear Sir,
I'm writing to you from Belgium and my home language is not English, so plse be indulgent with my grammatical faults.
Many thanks for your interesting and well presented video about the installation of your digital 10 Amp meter and in combination with a voltmeter.
If you could spend some time to read me, it would be great.
I already have since 40 years an analogue -50/0/+50 Amp gauge from Smiths in use.
This was already used in different cars.
Now it is installed in a VW Golf MK2 GTI 16V of 1988.
It is a gauge functioning with a shunt build inside of it.
Now the gauge is becoming a little bit tired and it is not anymore as sensitive as before in order to indicate the uses of small amounts of amperages!
This gauge is indicating the consumption of the total amp's of the loads used and also if the alternator is strong enough to produce some extra current to the battery in order to compensate the used Amps by the loads, but also to load some extra amp's into the battery, if necessary.
I heard that even when the battery is fully loaded, there is still about 0,5 Amps of current loading the battery?
Of course the Amp meter is registering the total electricity consumption of the car, but the starting motor, which is consuming too much amp's, (and would destroy the amp meter), is excluded from the circuit.
    Now come's finally my questions.
Please tell me if I'm wrong or not!?
Is it possible to use a digital Amp meter together with an analogue Amp meter?
Because, how ever I would like to keep my analogue Smiths Amp meter.
Is it possible to connect a digital AMP meter with a shunt in parallel to the two connecting points of my Smiths amp meter (one connecting point has two big wires coming together and the other one has only one big wire), or do I have to use separated (smaller) wires coming from the fuse box or battery or from the alternator?
I do not think personally that it will be possible to realize this, as when I want to measure the Amp's with my digital portable Amp meter, I first have to disconnect all the big wires from my Smiths Amp meter gauge, as otherwise I can't measure any amp's at all.
Also If I disconnect the big wires from the connecting points of my analogue Smiths Amp meter, the car will not start nor provide any electricity anymore, as the circuit is interrupted!
It must be in this case a serial connection, because parallel is only for the volts, isn't it?
But in all this I don't have any knowledge at all.
Can they possibly work together in harmony or not?
Do a digital Amp meter needs a shunt above 10 Amps?
But an analogue meter is still working with an internal shunt till 60 Amps, or maybe even above it?
My digital portable Amp meter can register amperage's till 20 Amps but only for a short time?
Nevertheless the shunt inside of the portable Amp meter seems to be as thick in diameter as the one installed inside of my Smiths gauge, with a bigger reading of 50 Amp instead of the 20 Amp?
And also what do you think about a digital Amp meter with a hall sensor?
Is this a better and easier solution?
Is it less accurate than a shunt, or can't he read the consumption of electricity and the load of the alternator together?
So dear Sir, I don't know if my logic is totally correct, but I would like to receive some additional help and expertise from you about the connection and possibilities with a separated shunt and his digital meter (with a more precised Amp's reading), and in combination of still using my old analog Smiths gauge?
Sorry for beeing so long, with my questions, explanations and comments.
Many thanks in advance for giving me (if possible), an answer!
    Best regards,
    Christian.

Hi Christian, Thank you for your comment and detailed explanation. Your English is perfectly clear.
      1) Is it possible to use a digital Amp meter together with an analogue Amp meter?
Yes you can use it BUT in series. So both metes can read.
      2) And also what do you think about a digital Amp meter with a hall sensor?
Hall is better because we don't needs shunt resistor and it is ALWAYS the best way here are my videos on current sensors ruclips.net/channel/UCkcBSig_Iu4ZnAIeCeG1TVgsearch?query=current
and here are my power meter videos ruclips.net/channel/UCkcBSig_Iu4ZnAIeCeG1TVgsearch?query=power+meter

Nice and informative video thanks for the same to guide people interested in electronics,
When you use a common power below 30 volts DC to power the Voltamp meter the thin black wire should not be connected to the negative along with the thick black wire as it will burn and damage the meter at higher current , for using the meter for voltage higher than 28/30 volts a separate power for the meter using the thin red and thin black wires to be used
I have a couple of meters 3 digits & 4 digits on my variable bench power supply & also for my auto cutoff battery chargers, very nice meters from Amazon & Ali Express
It has an accuracy correction factor of 0.8 to 1% plus 2 digits for voltage, the amps usually is almost correct but can be adjusted with the “ I ADJ “ pot as explained in this nice video
    All the best to you

For 20A , get a shunt that gives you 50mV at 20A. Then whatever you , multiply it by 2. For 20A you will read 10 and for 20A you will read 5A.

I put the big yellow onto the 12v and got a magic puff of smoke. This surprised me as I though if yellow was the voltmeter line it would read 12v else if part of teh ammeter circuit it would not read. I would appreciate anyone telling me how mine worked, what caused the problem, and potentially how I could fix it.

Thanks for this, I had one die, a 4 bit version (4 digits) I wonder what happened i had a lithium cell + tp4056 charge/discharge module on it. I never had issues with this setup then recently it wouldnt power on, after some investigating (i had it wrapped in heat shrink) I noticed the tp4506 module getting supper hot, it was going to blow! i scambled for a set of plier to cut the battery and managed to do it before it blew up in my face... after taking off the heatshrink i noticed the output of the battery on the t4056 module had lots of extra wire comming off it, which got squished up against an IC creating some kind of short I believe. Then i remember i remounted the display with hot glue and that could of brought that wire into contact, clip your wires after you you solder them on i suppose, there is a chance they can find a way and touch something they shouldnt.

There are many versions, and can have problems because of badly written firmware.
The display refresh can be much slower than advertised such as 800mS instead of 300ms.
The voltage and/or current can have bad tracking accuracy despite being zeroed and the gain trimmers adjusted.
The ones that have poor current tracking will also jump over the "0.01"amp reading.
The meters I got from Banggood have good current accuracy but poor voltage tracking.
If I calibrate at 5V, they will display "31.1" when I apply 30V.
And I am powering the meters from constant 5V to the thin red wire.

    • @robojax
      @robojax  4 года назад +1

Anything that is sold should meet advertised specifications regardless of price. The problems are unnecessary and easy for the manufacturer to correct. Most annoyingly, they used to be good.
I can fix the voltage problem by putting a 4.7M resistor from 3.3V to the voltage ADC input pin on the micro but the slow refresh makes them useless to me. Example,

    • @robojax

this module just shows the current. If your power module has CC, then you can short cercuit the output. So do it like this. I assume your power supply can't output more than 10A. 1-connect this meter at the output of your poower module 2- set the CC to minimum. 3-shoort circuit the output of the meter and keep it short cuircuitted 4-Adjust the current. and you will get the limit.

    • @robojax

The current is measured from shunt which is about 50mV which I have shown in video. if you miss up the wiring, it is possible that higher voltage gets into the circuit and might have killed the resistors that are protecting the module. Now it is very hard to repair it unless you have exact module, using multimeter check all resistors close to the shunt and compare it with the good one and if you are lucky you might find it. There is another possibility one of the chips reading the voltage is dead. good luck

This type of meter uses a shunt to measure the current in the ground wire. The thin black wire is also ground. You must NOT connect the thin black wire unless you are powering it from a separate isolated supply such as a separate battery. The video is misleading. If you connect the thin black wire it will affect the current reading. Simply disconnect the thin black wire and the Amps reading will be correct.

In normal multimeter we did like this to measure current, we measure current in externally thik wire by just putting our meter prod any 2 points at gap of 1 meter and it shows ampere in miliamps we just understand calibration that how much miliamps shows during actually known 1 ampere nd then we do multiplication nd here we get actual ampere, so like this is it possible in this meter
