- Am I REALLY a gravel rider?
Today I try another gravel ride. This time I have been invited down to the New Forest to do a gravel ride with Mike Wheeler from Wheelers at Large.

Nothing beats the trees, no traffic, and the soft crunch of gravel. Hope to see you on more gravel rides!
It was good fun.
Hey Leonard thanks for coming and riding our local trailway, a good gravel experience for you I hope and good to get out on a cheeky midweek ride for me. I look forward to the next time when Julie can hopefully join us 😁
Thanks for inviting me, Mike. Hopefully all three of us will go for a ride very soon when Julie is back on the bike.
She is definitely missed.
Good to see Mike on the channel. I rode with Mike and Julie in Majorca a few months ago and have a video of that on my own channel. Good people 🚴👍
Great video, A collaboration I never knew I needed, thanks guys.
Hi Leonard, what a nice chilled ride away from the cars - Mike and Julie have some lovely bike routes down their neck of the woods and into the New Forest - plus Mikes Hawaiin shirts are pretty cool!
It's time to extend the Hawaiian shirt collection, thanks for the comment 😀
Great to see you and Mike out on a ride in my neck of the woods! I subscribe to both channels and enjoy both immensely. Thank you.
Ah that’s great to see Mike in the video!! Love the RUclips community keep up the fantastic work.
That’s about as perfect as gravel gets! As a dedicated gravel rider, my trails are a combination of sand, deep gravel, loose gravel over sand, and a bit of pavement to get there. It’s also rolling hills with lots of sweeping turns that are very loose. It works every little muscle to stay on trail. I love it.😊
Great to see Mike on the channel!
It’s our third ride together
I love seeing those paths, so peaceful and the lack of cars makes me miss the UK. We use to ride in Thetford forest.
We need more paths like that out here in the Arizona desert.
Thanks for taking us along! Sold all my road bikes and only have one bike now which is a gravel.
Fun ride to watch and looks like a nice gravel area to ride in, soon maybe you will be at Unbound! Cheers!
I would really enjoy this. Looks peaceful to me. Thank you for sharing this experience
now you're biking my type of trail :) Ours go from paved roads to paved bike paths (converted rail trails) to gravel paths to twisting turning tree root and rock bike paths. I stay off the latter ones nowadays. I need my bike frame to last the rest of my life although my life might be very short if I try and ride some of those downhill rocky bike paths.
Nice to see Mike Wheeler(s at Large) on the channel!
I subscribe to both channels. There is little gravel near me. My aluminum Cannondale Topstone "adventure bike" makes an outstanding conventional touring bike. Nothing revolutionary or cutting edge about it. A 24x34 granny gear assures always not walking. Aftermarket touring wheels with assymetric rims reduce spoke failure likelihood. Even after 1 month zone 2 "pushing " a brush mower over 6 acres has made little difference on average speed. Zone 3 and above though is noticeable. At some point, a hobby must be balanced with home and hearth. Both of you are good blokes.
Got to say avoiding traffic is brilliant and getting ‘closer to nature’ is a huge attraction too. Nice ride. Thanks.
First started on road bike but my heart is in track and trails, i prefer a little more 'off grid' then gravel but some beautiful rides around for everyone
Keep cycling Keep healthy good ride petros from Greece 🇬🇷
Really enjoyed this video, Leonard. I like it when you team up with other riders, especially other RUclipsrs. And Wimborne looks lovely.
Leonard, it’s a hard time riding with Mr Wheeler. He’s a machine. Ridden hundreds of miles with the Wheelers.
And you should definitely join us in the Purbecks
@@darrenelbrow5144 He’s certainly a strong rider. The Purbecks sounds scary!
@@jollygoodveloit’s only gravity. We have a nice 25 mile ride with only a little bit of up. But the up bits are worth the views
Purbecks, no better place.
😢@jollygoodvelo Len they are Fabulous
Mike looks like he knows how to ride a bike...... And you Mr lee👍👍
From Oz … good to see you on gravel and in a safer cycling environment.
Be interested to learn your set up. Tyre pressure, tyre size and tread pattern. Regards and thanks. Ian
I used to think a cathedral =city status. It doesn't. Eg Guildford.
Also, many towns have Suffragen Bishops, which are not the same as Diocesan Bishops .
Nice ride btw.
I really enjoyed the MapMen video on what makes a british city. Basically Britain is an odd ball, and has no standard. You basically apply for being a city and the Monarch then decides if you are worthy or not.
From Oz … this is the Tour stage for you!
I noticed that we require two rear view mirrors on motorcycles here in the US, yet most cyclists rarely find it useful to use mirrors. But they have rear looking RADAR with all of that cost, mounting and batteries. Maybe carbon fiber framed mirrors would sell. But they still wouldn't look cool would they, and that what it's all about... sadly.
Nice videos Leonard, come to Indiana we'll have cake and coffee.
@@frankducett9 Tea and cake and I’ll be there, Frank!
Love a good gravel ride!
Who doesn’t?
Love getting away from the traffic, feels so good
I could usually beat the big guys up the hills at 145 lbs. But once the ground levels out it all over for the skinny guys. Seems like they, the big guys don't get depleted as easily while my sugar crashes.
What does that have to do with anything?
Nothin really.
Love these videos.
Tubeless Len???? good to meet up with Mike.
I wish that I could go and ride that path. It looked like quite a pleasant ride. Too bad I'm stuck in Canada lol
Nice ride! I almost tok my bike out from the garage. Don't ask........... 😎
What gravel bike you using
It’s my Pinnacle Arkose 1
A Giant Revolt 0 (Aluminium)
Pleasent day for a ride in the woods 🙂👍 So, are you a gravel rider? Quit different in the workout opposed to road cycling huh..i really enjoy the nature aspect of it personally
Two of my favorite channels in one place so cool!
Have you got the route for this ride please
It should be on my Strava.
with wider 700c tires and a set of Tanus armor inserts any bike can be a gravel bike
Leonard, it’s a hard time riding with Mr Wheeler. He’s a machine. Ridden hundreds of miles with the Wheelers
He dropped me on the climb!
MMMMM Gravel ;-)
I dipped my toe!
@@jollygoodvelo I have a biggy in a few weeks, will let you know how it went 🤣🤣🤣
Good luck!
A little dryer than last year's adventure
@@x.e.b.u And less terrifying!!
So what's the conclusion? Are you a real gravel rider or will you remain a roadie forever? ;-)
My gravel skills are somewhat lacking. I’ll stick with being a slow roadie for the moment!
don't get mad at me but, gravel > road.
I never did remember which way round those signs went.
Yes but the easy speed on the road can be fun too 😁
@@WheelersAtLarge oh yeah road is fun too for sure
@@BruceChastainroad riding is a necessary evil to get to the good stuff
@@darrenelbrow5144 haha true
Feels bad to see some bushes called as a "forest".. looks more like a park. Well, easy to say when actually "living in a forest". And yes, those gravel paths looked to be in better shape than some Real Roads here! Just last Saturday had to turn away from an official (with number on a map), gravel road, because it was totally undrivable with a road bike. Made for me a 20 kilometer extra loop.. gravel on this video would have been a dream compared to that excuse of a road. Thanks Finnish road maintaining budgeting! 😖
About Mike's hawaii style.. well.. perhaps it's a new wave cycling style.. hopefully just passing by.. 😆
I get that Finland has a lot of forests but maybe google ‘The New Forest’!
The spirit of gravel, anything goes
@@jollygoodvelo Thanks for a tip! Google in use and.. it's a park! Looks nice with all amenities and.. have a lots of rules. Has even a double decker for tourists to see The Forest with its towns. Could bet that any free wondering off from the ready made paths is out of rules and having a tent night highly forbidden with fine.. (When seeing heard of deer or a moose from kitchen window and almost stumbled with a bear, while picking blue berries, less than 10km from home makes one to think forest differently.)
Naturally all "The new" is always something else than "The old". Hopefully Sherwood forest known from tales of Robin Hood still exist.. 😁😜
Anyway gravel paths were nicely maintained and as mentioned; could go with a road bike! 👍
@@jhcycling3098quite a bit of the
New Forest isn’t rideable on a road bike. A gravel bike is the best tool for the job. The New Forest isn’t truly a forest. It’s a mix of of forest, heathland and bog
