My son and wife came home with "a large generator" the day before Tropical Storm Harvey, Aug'2017 hit Houston. I got it on a couch and we fled our home the day the storm hit. We had over 4ft of water when waters peaked, and it fell in the water, while still in the box. After the storm waters receded, I put it in storage for about 3y. Then, took it out after the freeze of 2021 and had it serviced by a small engine repair shop. Then it sat in my garage until the next freeze. It started! I used extension cords to run my fridge, a couple of fans and a couple of lights with the 120's, and later added my neighbors fridge and fans with the other 120's. No problem. Power came back that afternoon, so not a long test. I then decided to have a transfer switch installed to our box (about 800-900? USD) and not have to run extension chords. Good decision because the morning while Hurricane Beryl was pounding rain, I went out, got it running and got our house running on this genee, except for and AC, oven, washer, dryer, dishwasher. It was like a miracle to go into the house, soaking wet, and see all the lights on, microwave on, fridge on, etc! Went back out to check the load; it was about 15-20%. Later that day, I added my neighbors fridge and fans and load went up to maybe 30%. I remember hearing the generator 'groan', checked the load -- it had gone up to about 65%; turns out our neighbor ran a coffee maker for a couple of minutes and came by to show me what he got with a 120v extension! Early Tuesday evening, it was getting toasty inside, and the power from the genee stopped, even though, I could hear it running. Turns out, I had not turned off the breakers for the AC's after all, and the genee breaker tripped! At first, I didn't know what had happened. I thought my luck had finally run out, and the genee was trash. I reset the breaker and started to go through the house checking outlets, and finally looked at the thermostat upstairs and saw it said "cool". Not good for a 6250/8500w genee. Turned off both AC's, and genee ran without issue. We were fortunate to get line power back on later Tuesday evening. My neighbor called to confirm city power was on and I said that our generator was running the house, including the LED outdoor lights. He told me that the city power was back on, so I went through a generator shut down, and sure enough city power was on, and so were the AC's!!! What can I tell you about this generator? This is a BEAST of a generator. Maybe I was lucky, but the only thing I would do different is have a bigger genee that could run at least one central AC during summer heat. I've been looking carefully at the MicroSoft Start kit, but have not been able to confirm that it is compatible with the Trane's, or that it would make a difference. All in all, this genee was very efficient on gas, given the roughly 36hr of running time. It was loud, but who cares when you are in the midst of a major power outage? After things calmed down, I replaced the air filter, spark plug, and oil, and it started on the first pull. I set a reminder to start it, and on Sunday afternoon, 9/8/2024, it started on the second pull. Ran it about 20min after warming up with a vacuum cleaner, no problems! I set my reminder to start it every month, ordering some spare parts (5 spark plugs, 3 air filters), and heading to O'Rielly to buy several quarts of oil), and hopefully, it will, again, deliver when needed. I'm still looking for a good tri-fuel genee that can deliver enough watts to run central air.
I still like mine, haven't had to use it for an emergency (better to have and not need than to need and not have). The generator starts on first pull most of the time, second for sure. I am giving it to my son for a back up power for his house, I purchased a 13000 watt Powerhorse generator from Northern Tool last week for my back up, what a Beast. I wanted a generator that will run my 3.5 ton AC, it does it like a charm along with the refrig, freezer, lights and other items, of course, it was more than double the price of the Storm Responder. My final thought on the Storm Responder is it was a great purchase and met all I wanted out of it for its size, wouldn't hesitate to purchase another in a heartbeat. Just wanted to update, have a great day and an even better tomorrow.
Thanks for watching and for the great feedback. I haven’t had to use mine either (knock on wood) but I do use it around the house for power tools etc just to put some fuel through it. I try and start it once a month. Yeah that new generator you got is really what I need as well for my house but with the storm responder I just have to not expect the ac/heat to be run..
I bought the same model one week ago, I am very impressed so far. The engine seems to be very powerful and also started on the first pull and keep has ever since. I did the break in and switched to full synthetic 10w30 Castrol oil and gas with Sta-Bil added. I have an alert on my phone set to remind every other week to start it, I hope to never need for an emergency but if needed I'll be ready. The only con and it really isn't one is that it is loud, however, I live in the country so no neighbors to disturb. I hope we both have a great experience with them. Thanks for sharing
john cobb thank you for watching. I really enjoy my generator as well. I mean all generators will be loud except for those small Honda ones. I use mine for small projects and just in case a natural disaster comes. So far it fires right up.
@@GReviewz Do you still have this generator, and does it still work properly? I acquired this generator by trading in a Ryobi 6500. It belonged to a store owner who sells them used, and I specifically asked him to trade me for this one. I preferred the screen on this one because it displays all the maintenance reminders and other useful information. Notably, it also has a power usage percentage meter, which is a significant advantage. I received mine with 106.5 hours of usage (although it’s been used, it’s in excellent condition and runs exceptionally well). It was manufactured in 2021, so it’s only about 3 1/2 years old. The only difference between your generator and mine is that mine has only four of the 120 outlets, but I do have a long extension cord that allows me to connect it to my central breakers.
Serge Shariy thank you for watching. I am glad you like you generator. I really like mine also. As long as you store it right it should last for many years.
@@GReviewz What do you suggest for "storing it right" -- Bought this last year before last storm season and want to make sure I should keep it or return it. Should it run a fridge + window AC unit??
Jason Hyber thanks for watching. It’s always good to have. Just remember who know what bs could be coming our way in the future...I either run it dry or I fill it with ethanol free gas and add stabil.

I purchased the same generator today, model 30798. It seems solid, started smoothly, and had good reviews overall from a large sample size (245) on Lowe's website. The reviews were better than its Generac counterpart that costs the same, $799. I just wish the Briggs was made in the USA. That would normally be a deal breaker for me but we have storms on the horizon and gennies aren't staying in stock long. Thanks for the video.
Jim S thanks for watching. Ive had the generator for awhile now and never had any problems..it’s a solid unit. I know it may not be made In USA but Briggs is a good American company...food luck with the hurricanes. Also try and break in the unit as much as you can. You do t want to put a heavy load on a motor that’s not broken in some.
To be honest, the ones that are made in China are better because they are Honda clones including these Briggs & Stratton ones. They also have automatic voltage regulators which helped them put out cleaner power when loads are added and taken away. I also have one of these B&S generators and it is a monster when I load it down, it does not seem to strain the engine much.
Thanks for watching. Just a word to the wise make sure you run a surge protected power strip at the end of the cable running out of the generator.. a lot of appliances that have small lcd screens on them can’t handle power surges very well and could blow the screens out. For example microwave and fridge screen...
If you have a portable generator, please watch a video about generator safety ruclips.net/video/I1jT3ANENvI/видео.html do not ignore it! Stay safe, okay. 👍
Looks like the one I bought at Lowe's a year or two ago. They were normally $800, but someone returned it saying they couldn't start it. It was discounted, then they knocked 20% off, plus I had a credit card from Lowe's that knocked it down another 5%. I think paid just over $400, plus tax, after all the additional discounts just to get rid of them. I try to remember to start it every month or two in load tested just to make sure.
Thanks for watching. Yeah the unit really is a good product. At least you know the whole thing is made by one manufacturer. Not like a separate engine, chassis, alternator etc. I start mine once a month and use ethanol free fuel...
@@GReviewz impossible to get ethanol free gas here. summertime is usually the best time, since there is sometimes less of it. Winter time has proven to me that the gas is worse.
I have the 7000 watt elite model from a few years back. It is interesting to note that they did not include a gas screen in the tank to filter for any large debris getting into the tank. I guess they did it as a cost cutting move.
Bought this about 8 months ago. Did proper maintenance on it ran it once a month. Just got hit by a hurricane. Did not run it in the storm. And pulled it out. I ran it for 2 night. Stayed off in the days. Then just on th 3rd night it stopped producing power. Even the display won't show anything. No lights on the plug in. Nothing. It has less than 55 hours on it
Wow that is terrible. Did you have too much running to it? I believe there is a fuse reset on the unit… there has to be something these engines are really stout…bad gas? Ran out of oil?
@@GReviewz engine is fine nothing.wrong with it. Did a few test found out the voltage regular is bad. Ordered a new one. But due to hurricane had to buy a new generator. I know briggs and stratton are good. But I just happen to get 1 of the few defective ones.
Did you get the same generator? I’m glad you were able to find the problem..do you mind sharing the link to the part or the part number in case mine or some viewers have the same problem..?
Bought one for hurricane Michael. Works and performs great. The only gripe I have.Is that it is a little loud. Not as quiet as a Honda generator. But about $400-$500 less in price. So I'll deal with the noise.
Dan Walters Thank you for watching. I find it slightly loud also but compared to many others in its price range it’s about the same. I figured you could use synthetic oil. What brand and weight of oil did you use? Here is a link to a RUclips video of an easier way to quiet your generator. ruclips.net/video/DH4L1rTral4/видео.html
@@GReviewz I used 10W30 syn.And I always use ethenol free gas in my small engine equipment. Thanks for the info.for quieting down my unit.I'll give it a try.
Dan Walters thanks for the info. I thought synthetic oil would work. Someone else said it wouldn’t. Just remember to point the muffler away from area you want to be quieter. It does help a little bit but you are right it is no Honda.
Thanks for watching and for the question. DO NOT plug anything in before starting. It states that in the owners manual as well. Reason for being when starting there is a surge of power that can mess things up that are plugged in. If you feel the need to plug in before starting at least use a surge protector. Once started plug your biggest draw item in first.. then go smaller…hope that helped…
if it has oil fill plugs on both sides of engine check the backside and make sure its tight mine vibrated out while running didnt even notice it had 2 but now have a broke rod.
Sheila Claxton thank you for watching. That is bad. Thank you for the heads up. Was the second drain plug yellow in color? Were on the was the second plug?
The easiest ways I would suggest are.. run the generator until it runs out of gas, siphon it out. Or disconnect the fuel hose running to the fuel shutoff under the tank. I use ethanol free gas and even throw stabil in so I never have a problem.. but I start mine at least once a month…
Did you actually use the handle to move it, I just pulled mine out of the box and it feels like if I try to use the handle to move it’s going to break, it’s just keeps moving like if I lift it 100% something is going to give or break on the frame it’s mounted too, seems like not enough metal support for the handle??? Anyone else??
Thanks for watching. My shed is approximately 80 yards from my house. Every time I use it I have to lug it down a double track trail over a few root to get it up to the house/truck. Never had a problem with it.. yea it feels flimsy but I try to not break it..
Thanks for watching. To my knowledge there isn’t any standard gas generator that is safe for small electronic devices. Only think that is safe is a pure sign wave solar generator/battery pack like a jackery.. having said that I have run a laptop off of mine but I plugged a surge protector into the generator and then the laptop into the surge protector..
@@GReviewz copy that. Just bought one of these because of hurricane ida knocking our power out. I didn't think it was but I couldn't find any info at all on this model. I appreciate the info provided, was very helpful
That’s exactly why I purchased mine. Before you go hooking up expensive stuff. Hook up some stuff you don’t care about loosing first just to make sure. I got mine a few years ago. They may have changed some internals etc…
Hi there. I have a question for you : did you went online for the storm generator responder, or did you bought it somewhere cause I am trying to get one, and in most places it is out of stock. Can you give me some advice please..
Thanks for watching. To be honest hurricane season is not the time to buy a generator. If you had looked to buy a generator like two months ago you would have found a bunch. I got mine at Lowe’s. I just went onto the generator portion of the Lowe’s site and it cashed...since there are two hurricanes in the gulf most stores across the country take the generators off their shelves and sends them to we’re they will sell/are needed..
Thanks for watching. The best answer I can give you is whatever it says in the owners manual or what it comes with. The problem is from time to time the engineers that designed the engine will change what oil is recommended from time to time… start out with dinosaur oil then once engine is broken in switch to synthetic oil..
Thanks for watching. No it doesn’t. This is a pull start and all it does is generate power from a gas engine that turns a “alternator” they do make generators that have a battery for a push start system
Thanks for watching. I guess it depends on what you are using it for? The unit is loud however no any louder than comparable models of other brands... you can find better mufflers for generators online that will quiet it down. If you are wanting a quieter experience look at some inverter generators they are much quieter.
Thanks for watching. I dont see why not. I have it backup for my house. Obviously I can’t run everything off of it but all must haves yes. Fridge, freezer, well pump etc. just add up all the appliances input wattages and make sure it only uses about 80% of the generators watt output.
@@GReviewz definitely temporary. For instance, I lost power for 2 days this week on the east cost and it's hot and I have a fridge full of stuff. Just would like the generator to run outside and run a line to the fridge and to the A/C. Is it a matter of just hooking up the extension from the generator to the fridge? And then another extension cord to the A/C? Proper gage of course
I’m originally from fl and the emergency type is what I’ve a lot of growing up...we put generator outside. Aimed muffled away from the house. Used a cable lock and locked it to our fence... just in case. Ran an appropriate gauge wire from generator into our garage and into the house. We then shut the garage door on top of wire. Hooked a surge protector to the end of the wire to generator. Then ran a wire to whatever we wanted to in the house...
@@GReviewz thanks for the replies. Yeah, I'm probably making it more complicated than it has to be. I just got this generator yesterday, so thanks for the video. One last question since I have no generator experience. Is it OK to plug things in while the generator is running?
Derek Green to my knowledge you are supposed to start up the generator then plug your appliances in to help protect from initial surge in power from the startup. Again if you are plugging in a fridge that has a nice led or lcd screen make sure to use a surge protector.
Thanks for watching. I have never run e85. I actually run pure gas in mine. Ethanol is what clogs the carbs. It all depends on the wattage requirements of all the units. Look up the running watt requirements (normally found in the specs or on a sticker on the unit) then add them up. If that number is under this generators running watts you are good to go.
@@GReviewz I thought E85 ran cleaner then unleaded gas? Hmm. Thus the reason you get less MPG.. Well at least in my truck... Thank you! :) I have lived all my life here in Texas on the coast, 54 years and now I am worried that I need a generator.. lol.. I tell ya.. things are all upside down. I subscribed to your channel. Good day my friend. :)
Do you drive a Chevy truck? It may run cleaner in a fuel injected vehicle however I guarantee if you call any any small engine repair shop and ask if they recommend e85 they will tell you no. But I wouldn’t believe some guy on the internet so make that call yourself!

nemesis83100 good question. To my knowledge when a generator is just sitting there idling the motor is not connected to the alternator. When a load is recognized a clutch engages. Plus my generator has not been broken in yet so that might be why. But any generator I’ve used will rev up during any load. Kind of like your car. Rpm’s have to climb from idle just go get up to even 20mph
Thanks for watching. Please consider subscribing if you enjoyed the video. Below is a spec link from Lowe’s. According to the manual it’s 1.00 quarts. In the box there was a single quart of Briggs oil (not in generator) www.lowes.com/pd/Briggs-Stratton-Home-Series-6250-Watt-Gasoline-Portable-Generator/1001834758
I have the Briggs & Stratton 5500 watts Storm Responder, I guess it's the model prior to the one you have? Treated me well so far, had it about 6 years, only needed it for one storm for 5 days of power outage. I cycle new ethanol-free gas with Sta-bil through it every six months. So far, so good.
The model you have is most likely the model before mine. The reason I got this model is because that's the best bang for the buck Lowe's had at the time. Yeah stabil is a must in the gas. Briggs makes so many models i believe there might even be a couple model between ours!

@@GReviewz went to a repair shop and they ordered it for me. I'll get part number tho. Had to go out of state so I'll get it when I get back.
Also no I went with a troy bilt generator
Thanks bro.
Thank you for watching. I hope the video helped.
Do you start the generator up and then plug your plugs in, or do you plug them in before you start the generator up
Thanks for watching and for the question.
@@GReviewz It did, THANK YOU.
Awesome! I am glad I could help. That same thing applies to battery backups as well..and the inverter generators…
Gas tank rusted out. Wonder where I can find one aftermarket that works. Anyone have any ideas?
if it has oil fill plugs on both sides of engine check the backside and make sure its tight mine vibrated out while running didnt even notice it had 2 but now have a broke rod.
Sheila Claxton thank you for watching. That is bad. Thank you for the heads up. Was the second drain plug yellow in color? Were on the was the second plug?
How do you drain the gas, I’m not crazy about keeping gas in the tank when not in use
Never had a problem with it.. yea it feels flimsy but I try to not break it..
nah mines good
Is this model safe to run sensitive electronics with ? I.e. Computer, TV, ect
What kind of oil is best to use for this generator?
Thanks for watching. The best answer I can give you is whatever it says in the owners manual or what it comes with. The problem is from time to time the engineers that designed the engine will change what oil is recommended from time to time… start out with dinosaur oil then once engine is broken in switch to synthetic oil..
Does this type of generator have a battery?
Thanks for watching. No it doesn’t. This is a pull start and all it does is generate power from a gas engine that turns a “alternator” they do make generators that have a battery for a push start system
What Oil do you use?
I haven’t changed the oil on mine in over a year but from what I remember it’s 5w30 and I get synthetic blend.
Do you think this is too loud? I turn it off during night. Or it’s too loud :(
Thanks for watching. I guess it depends on what you are using it for? The unit is loud however no any louder than comparable models of other brands... you can find better mufflers for generators online that will quiet it down. If you are wanting a quieter experience look at some inverter generators they are much quieter.
Does the stat station still work? Mine just shows squares. Had less than 10 hours. Out of warranty and a replacement power panel is $170.
Are you referring to the lcd display that shows the hours, watt usage etc?
Yes that one, my screen stop displaying, only shows squares.
Do you use that thing in the rain or does it get wet?
Nope, sat in my storage shed, humidity maybe?
I have heard that the screens going out when getting wet like in a hurricane/rain. I wonder if some a fuse blew on it?
Just curious, did u have to add oil to the gas?
Christopher Botsford thank you for watching. No sir it has an oil reservoir just like a riding lawn mower engine.
I have thr 7000 and it has a C O , that caught fire, can not find replacement part. Any ideas
Debbie Baker thanks for watching... I’m sorry the part you said caught fire is a C 0?
Can this supply power to a small cabin ?
Thanks for watching. I dont see why not. I have it backup for my house. Obviously I can’t run everything off of it but all must haves yes. Fridge, freezer, well pump etc. just add up all the appliances input wattages and make sure it only uses about 80% of the generators watt output.
What would be the best method for hooking up a fridge and also an A/C in a different room on the other end of a house?
Thanks for watching... I’ll be honest... that is a long answer. It all depends on the situation and if it’s a emergency, temporary or permanent use...
Did it come with oil or did you have to buy it separately and what kind do you use?
Thanks for watching. Mine came with oil. I’ll be honest I can think of the viscosity right now. I knows it’s in the Manual.
Well this run on E85? 2 window AC units and a fridge.. Will this do it? Thanks.
But I wouldn’t believe some guy on the internet so make that call yourself!
i'm looking for part# for the recoil or if you give the engine#, please?
I do not know the exact part # however I hope these links may help you. www.partstree.com/search/?type=model&term=030592+01+briggs+stratton+portable+storm+generator+6+250+watt

Is the engine supposed to spit and spuder?? Only have a10% load on it??
nemesis83100 good question.
@@GReviewz changed the oil and it stopped spitting and spuddering
that might be why mine did it in the video. That is still the break in oil. I don't have enough hours on the engine to change oil yet.
@@GReviewz book said 5 hours but i did it at 12.7 hours and ran way better..
nemesis83100 yeah I have like 4 hours on mine. Did you switch to synthetic oil?
Hi! Did the generator come with oil in it? How much does it take?
Thanks for watching. Please consider subscribing if you enjoyed the video. Below is a spec link from Lowe’s. According to the manual it’s 1.00 quarts. In the box there was a single quart of Briggs oil (not in generator) www.lowes.com/pd/Briggs-Stratton-Home-Series-6250-Watt-Gasoline-Portable-Generator/1001834758
Mine came with oil already in crankcase ready to go...always check the yellow oil screw dipstick on this model # 030728
Did it come with oil?
firewill56 yes sir mine did come with some standard break in oil.
Yes it does. But after about 30 hrs.on mine.I changed it.Probably not required for this short amount of hrs.But that's just my preference.
Nice choice. Are you on the Gulf coast?
Patrick Wagz thank you! No not the gulf coast I'm in NC.
Saludos a ese generador se puede añadir starter electrico
My Spanish is bad from what google translate says is that you are asking me if an electric start can be added to this generator.? No pude encontrar un kit de arranque electrico para este generador briggs y Stratton fabrican generadores de tamano similar que tienen un arranque electrico. This generator does not have an electric start option however Briggs and Stratton does sell models with electric start.
Does anyone know about connecting this generator parallel?
Thanks for watching. Sorry i do not know. I have never seen a people hook this style of generator in parallel though. Are you trying to connect this to your house?
Did you check the oil before start it..? And if the oil its include.. in the box..?
Thanks for watching. Yeah the generator came with the necessary oil. Please Consider subscribing.
Mine won't start.
Would this work for a welding machine
Thanks for watching. How many watts does your specific welder require?
@@GReviewz it has to 210 amps it doesnt show the watts
Hmm. I know generators are rated in watts... what model welder is it I’ll do some research and see what I find..
@@GReviewz its a 210 mvp hobart
I found a thread about your exact question.. read the info in the link...weldtalk.hobartwelders.com/forum/equipment-talk/general-welding-questions/699680-hobart-210-mvp-another-generator-question
Mines is brand new and it don’t push a damn thing
What do you mean dont push a thing? You mean it’s not producing any current?
@@GReviewz yea everything I plug into it won’t power at all the power gauge stays at 0% and all it won’t even run my corded chain saw nor my power drill
Yeah something is wrong with it.. contact the place you purchased it or Briggs and Stratton..
So basically made a video on whats on the box
I mean reviews in general give you all the info about the product specs so yes... I also did a demo. What else do you want a complete engine breakdown?
@@GReviewz just seems useless to just read what's on the box.
Hunter D. I understand but what else did you want me to do in a review video? I read the specs. Demonstrated how to start it and did a demo while using the generator...
@@GReviewz I was just frustrated at mine that it wouldn't run power and turned out the cord they sent was bad. I was being an ass. My bad hoss.
Hunter D. It’s ok man. I understand. We’re you able to get everything straight with a working cable?
