Ahh the 80's good old days of stereo systems. I was stationed in Germany in the 80's I put together a hell of a stereo system. I had a kick ass Marantz receiver amplifier, a Marantz dual open deck tape deck, a Pioneer turntable, a Teac reel to reel, a pioneer reverb, a Technics graphic equalizer and a pair or Bose 901's. I can't remember any of the models anymore its been so long but it was all top-of-the-line stuff. I hit hard times after I got out and sold all of it for pennies on the dollar.
Bought a full set of the Sony ES series. Had it for over a decade. A beautiful and impressive unit. Coupled with a pair of 12' JBL three way studio monitors. Awesome sounding unit. Unfortunately where I come from my Pacific Island was hit with a super Typhoon and burst the sliding glass doors in my entertainment room and the rest is history. 😎👍
I actually think some of the smaller amateur Sony stuff from that time wasn’t too bad either. I have a 1991 model Sony str-av570, stereo receiver often called “worthless trash” by the audiophile community. It looks like nothing special, but it actually has some power to it, and the tuner is incredible. It sounds good to me, like really good, even with the bass and treble knobs in the dead center, and it was only $25 at goodwill!! If it had any flaw, it would be that it clips a little when both the bass boost (dbfb) button and bass knob are on max while using the tuner. The only issues I have ever had with it were completely my fault. I got curious, opened it up, and accidentally swapped a ground screw for a nearly identical, slightly shorter screw from elsewhere in the unit, causing a loose connection. This would sometimes cause erratic relay clicking and lights flashing on it when in standby, as well as a loud thump through the speakers when turning it on, however it did function correctly other than that. I later realized this problem and fixed it. I really think smaller 90s Sony stuff is awesome and may sound better for the average listener than audiophile grade stuff due to the slightly pronounced bass.
I spent 5 years to collect my Sony ES series with mono block of N77(s) and APM-4, APM 77, APM-55, APM-33 too. I love their crystal sound a lot, especially for vocal.
I used to enjoy the components that the big Japanese companies would put out , Pioneer , Sony , Kenwood , Aiwa , Sansui , Technics and so on. It was a lot more fun.
I used the Sony portable DAT many years ago for straight to two track recording off of a live sound console and for field and dialog recording It was a great machine. I now use a similar rig from Tascam recording to compact flash.
Nice vintage Sony ES setup YEs, late 8s/early 90s were Sony's peak for hi end consumer gear that punched above its market. Those were the days when average buyers could see some of these pieces at the Best Buys of the world in the early 90s. I have great nostalgia for this Sony era as this was the time I could first afford this level of gear, buying a SOny VHS deck with the same look and wood side panels. Cool that Sony did those dark wood side panels late90s/early90s when most mass/mid market Hifi dropped them post 1980 having been so common a design look of the 70s. I would love to have that system, but swap out the DAT for similar vintage and look Sony ES CD player ;)

i agree with you on nakamichi but revox ,what could not be 100% working i received from my father is Revox system only two components were from the 80´s a extra cassette deck and a compact disc, only the speakers could be the weak point but some earlier altec lasing completed the sound on my fathers Revox and technics it´s my cup of tea allthough i have a 76 high-end system from Pioneer ofered by my father when he bought the revox, both technics and pioneer are my favorite brands this talking about more comercial branded, there are many brands that are almost not available , not even when refered by known hi-fi magazines at the time ,it makes sense they reporters of hi-fi saw them on someones house when people wanted to get them they were not available anymore , this in the 70´s happened a lot ,it was the decade of do it yourself ,especially on Germany . I knew several guys that the speakers that were perfect were complete built by them, the bricolage years
The reason the N77ES doesn’t have the matching balanced inputs to the E80s balanced outputs is because the actual matching unit is the E77ES/D (there was both a non digital and digital version). The E77 is also more rare and desirable than the E80 but overall they are pretty close. Conversely, the “non meters” version of the amp you were talking about is the N80ES that matches the E80, and does have the balanced inputs. It came out after the N77 and the meters were dropped simply because Sony I assume figured that was going out of style at the time. The implementation of the balanced ins and outs on both units is also not ideal from what I understand. There was a step down model from the N77 and that would be the N55 (100w, no meters) but it had a smaller half height case. It is also believed that the international power supply versions of the N77 are more reliable than the domestic US ones but good luck finding one of those. Lastly, the correct matching CD player for the N77/E77 would be the X7ESD which predates the X777 and is even more of a brick house.
I just got a DVP- S 7000 DVD/CD player. So far, I like it. Had to do a little research for a remote for it. BTW, I saw a Technics RS 1500 RTR in the background. A truly wonderful machine. I liked so mush, I got another one too. Now, a Tascam DR-40X does the same thing. A remote secession required hefting one of these units (70 #'s) to the site. Not any more. The Tascam doesn't weigh any more the what a reel of 10.5 tape weighs.
No one gives Sony the props they deserve. Yeah, they've slipped a bit. They also manufacture some very important and well crafted professional production equipment for audio and video. A recording studio I worked at used an excellent 2inch 24 track tape machine by Sony and it performed beautifully.
