Piraeus is not an Athenian suburb but a totally different city, is the 3rd biggest city in Greece, behind Athens and Thessaloniki, with it's own metropolitan area. Piraeus city population is approx. 170k while the metro population is approx. 500k. However it's true that Athens metro and Piraeus metro combined make up the Athens LUZ so probably that's why most foreigners are confused.
