imho if you want rate nasi lemak, you have to go with the standard ingredients for nasi lemak,ie. nasi lemak 'kosong' or plain in english, which essentially has 5 items, Rice, Sambal, Fried Anchovies(ikan bilis), Roasted Peanuts & Egg(hard boiled). If you only order this at all stalls then only you can judge as all stalls have different add ons but they all have the basic nasi lemak. So your first visit in yishun should be null and void.....imho

Their Plate Decoration Placement and Food Color Looks Good. Nice Sambal Sauce, void of, if contents have good amount of cook soft big onions slices best. Great side dishes such will enhance nasi lemak 1. Sambal squid / octopus / cuttle fish 2. Nyonya Acar 3. Grill Saba Mackeral (best) 4. Sambal Chilli Belacan stir fried Water Spinach 5. Stir fried Cabbage 5. Satay Marinate Fried Chicken 4. Sambal Marinated Fried Chicken

Nasi Lemak Ayam Taliwang (slightly different take with Indonesia style grilled chicken and fresh coconut cream)
Boon Lay Power (late night west side superstar! but can be unreliable)
Selera Rasa (long queue, but basmati rice is awesome)
Coconut Club (Atas but very comfortable and high quality. Can be unreliable, so do not come off peak hours)
Village Park (Damansara legend. Always a stop by in KL. Berempah chicken provides lovely textures)
Lots of smaller ones in KL are pretty nice too

The standard nasi lemak set (rice, sambal and fried chicken wing) should constitute 80-85%. The rest is allocated to the best 1 or 2 secondary dishes you can pair with it. Because realistically thats how one would order their nasi lemak

Maybe for the weightage you can give 70% Rice, 25% Sambal, 5% Ikan Bilis. The basic Nasi Lemak consist of only Rice, Sambal , Ikan bilis & egg.
As for recommendation, the best one i’ve tried so far is at Nur Sarah (Pioneer Point).

  • @streen2000

Interesting point about the fried chicken and the ingredients being left out. Places like selera rasa don't have such an issue I guess because their chicken has such a high turnover that you get it hot - problem is also that it is often in short supply. Quite often I don't get to order extra wings as a la carte because they just don't have enough to go around

I do get your point on adding like a chicken rendang...but i think at that point it becomes to "jelak" or rich. To me the side dishes serve more to add texture and contrast in taste. That's why the best nasi lemak have a variety of chili/sambal to choose from. The fried side dishes aren't suppose to add much.

I think so. I feel like 'fried rice' needs to be in the metric since it's very telling of the skill level and all tze chars will have it. HK's da pai dang and ID and MY's warungs can also loosely be considered tze chars.

Alderic, the reason why the fried sides such as chicken wings and ikan kuning taste subpar is that due to poor workflow/limited manpower. Most cooks will deep fry large batches ahead of service so as to have them ready to go. It doesn't lead to an optimal meal. Ideally either you should be looking for a stall that has an extremely high turnover of patrons so that the proteins are constantly being topped up or a stall that fries the proteins in small batches. However, frying in small batches leads to longer wait times.

Nasi lemak is the national dish of Malaysia. For sure you have to go there for it. And what you'd find is the best nasi lemak is always quite simple without too many sides. Usually just the rice, sambal, cucumber, boiled egg, ikan bilis, nuts and one protein like fried chicken or beef rendang.
