It's kind of difficult but I wouldn't really know what to categorize arena fighters as. We don't really have an issue with Gundam EXVS being considered a fighting game, for instance.
So here's the thing people don't talk enough about: The Game Awards do not matter. As in, no professional game developer is making a game to win this award. That's not true for the Oscars, the Emmys, the Tonys, the Grammy, etc. So for a professional? This ain't it. Also, most of the awards aren't even shown on stage. And the ones that are give the people who won laughably small amount of time to give speeches. So for the show itself? This ain't it. And then for the consumers, the #1 things people talk about is the advertising, not the awards. Who wins game of the year will not matter 2 months from now the same way Parasite winning Best Picture mattered almost five years ago. So for the consumers? This ain't it. This show is for no one. And does not matter.
I agree with the first point. (I do think it's led more to a decline in quality of movies over the last decade or so tho, but I digress) The second point about screen time happens with every major awards show. People don't see the best makeup artist, spoken word album, Children's music album, short film, etc. categories. The third point? There usually is a GOTY edition of GOTY games and I think they usually do sell well. But yeah, it's just a big concerted marketing push for upcoming games more than anything.
@@jellojiggler1693 the thing is that most games get a GotY edition regardless of where gave them that award. It's not just The Game Awards GotY winner that gets a GotY version. And, yeah, a ton of awards shows give out more awards than are shown on tv. I know a guy who won an Emmy for a technical category and that sure as shit wasn't broadcast anywhere. But the Game Awards falls short in picking which awards not to show *and* having a deep enough list of awards that congratulate industry excellence beyond what would look good on a television. The awards that aren't shown on the broadcast are for more major categories than some obscure technical category (sometimes even having the best games in popular genres relegated to an afterthought), which is just a slap in the face to those devs. And then they don't have really any more technical awards that would be appropriate to have at the live event, but not on the broadcast. Where are the awards for the server architecture of games? Where are the awards for the marketing (like trailers) of games? Where are the awards for sound design? For UI design? For development tools? For technical feats? For mocap performances? For animation? For concept art?
Then I got a genuine question for you. Not that I disagree with you. But if they’re not making a game to win this award. What are they making it for? What is the equivalent of an Oscar. Personally speaking I’d say it would be this
I agree with Core A Gaming’s assessment that Arena Fighters are non-traditional fighting games, not unlike platform fighters, which is why Sparking Zero deserves the nomination compared to Sifu that’s an Action Beat-em-up and Jump Force where the (same) devs didn’t try. My vote goes to Tekken 8 though.
they also said For Honour is a fighting game. This channel started as a real concern covering for honour, because I thought it was similar to a fighting game. It is however, NOT A FIGHTING GAME. Neither are arena fighters.
@@rooflemonger Hmm For Honor seems like a unique case since it functions like a competitive online team-based experience but from what I recall surprisingly deep melee combat given the amount of options that you are given to guard break your opponent and the amount of classes you can choose, that *almost* feels like “a different FG character” when playing the round based 1v1 mode (might make it more complex from Chivalry and Mordhou but I’m not familiar with them enough to make that statement) IMO *Some* Arena fighters share more similarities to be considered non-traditional fighters and while not focusing on balance over fan service and fun, can be competitive (Sparking Zero with its built-in ratio system for example) and mechanically deep especially at a high level, similarly to traditional fighting games, in a bigger way that meets the eye than the surface level super spamming gameplay. Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 and Sparking Zero deserve more respect imo and that can be seen when you give games like these a decent chance. In the end I agree to disagree, no disrespect it’s all good Dood 👍
@@rooflemongerSo then, what is a fighting game? If we go by the definition that its a game in which 2 or more characters can be selected to then be controlled by players, where the goal is to bring the opposing teams life to 0, then yes, it would be a fighting game
@@rooflemongerWhat makes you think Sparking Zero isn't a fighting game? It's got a large amount of mechanics as well as the basic structure of a fighting game compared to traditional fighters. Health Bars, Meter, Combos, Tagging, Supers, Projectiles, Parries, and Cancels.
?? If platform fighters are fighting games so are arena fighters Having said that, sparking doesn't belong anywhere near the game awards. Its value has essentially nothing to do with its worth as a fighting game or even a game at all and everything to do with it being a piece of dragon ball media
there aren’t enough differences with the genre to say platform fighters aren’t a sub genre of fighting games while arena fighters have such huge gameplay differences to say it isn’t apart of the genre.
I'm expecting SNK to give a fatal fury trailer but also for them to drop an additional side trailer on youtube for mature/vice/the balance patch. I know some people earlier this year on the KoF pro scene were clambering for the return of KrohGOAT in the new balance patch.
Please remember, that nominations are submitted by gaming media. So weird things like multiversus being there twice or sifu as a fighting game doesn't necessarily mean that the people at game awards don't know what they are doing. It's the whole gaming media industry that has no clue! 😢
Frankly most awards shows are moreso just a gauge of marketing success than full-on quality. Which also is why smaller games that simply don't have a marketing budget only make the awards nominations if they see a MASSIVE viral push.
My hypothesis is that they are not awarding the games as games, but as commercial products. Low sells mean you will not be there, while good sales will put you there even if it doesn't make sense. I believe this concept is simply disgusting and wrong, but I think it is the real reason why TGA is so weird, with its fake popular vote, its stilted presentations and absurd nominee selections. They don't think like gamers, they think like executives. For me, the game of the year is Granblue, 100%. Such a tight, challenging and beautiful little masterpiece. Tekken 8 lost its place by not balancing things in time, piling Mishimas en masse (even dead ones), greedy DLC practices and in general by making the gameplay an annoying rushdow fest for every character.
4:53 I have a dream where arena fighters will not be judged by their fighting game subgenre but by the content of their character. I have a dream today.
I'm 100% willing to give arena fighters a chance, as soon as they release one that has balance and competitive integrity in mind. Sparking Zero is a fine beer and pretzels game, I had a ton of fun with it, but the more you dig into it the more the cracks begin to show. It's just that everywhere I look in the genre I see the same developer mindset, that they're not looking to draw a competitive crowd, that they're looking to be series authentic. I want to see the potential of the genre if the developers actually tried to make something competitive.
@@kevingriffith6011 Thank you. While Sparking Zero is a very fun and cool game, it's far away from competitive, it's mechanically broken. Same with the Storm games. If you want the game the arena fighter that gets the closest to a traditional fighting game, check out Kill La Kill IF. Demon Slayer and One Justice 2 are fair mentions too. Arena fighters are a subgenre of fighting games just like platform fighters are, and even inside arena fighters there are vastly different types. If anything, the next possible savior is Bleach Rebirth of Souls, it has roman cancels! (I had to rewrite my comment cus it got deleted, hopefully it will not show twice lol)
@@kevingriffith6011to be fair, there has always been extremely small amounts of people who are actually invested in playing these styles of games competitively and these games don’t cater to people who play games to compete and win, but as, like you said, a beer and pretzels game. this game was made entirely for people who like dragon ball and the budokai tenkaichi series.
I just found out on Maximilian's stream last night Apparently, if you read the super fine print of the game awards nomination papers, DLC could have always won Game of the year. It just never happened before this year. I think it sucks that it got nominated, but it's not Geoff that picks the games, it's a video game journalist committee.
video game "journalist" committee. The journalists that said pokemon ruby and sapphire were 7/10 for having too much water, or the journalists that couldn't get through the tutorial stage on cuphead?
@@jellojiggler1693the were right tho. ORAS (and by proxy RSE) legitimately have to much water. The problem is that these routes are functionally the exact same. Same vistas andmostly the same music make for an incredibly repetitive experience, unlike the routes on land, which are much more creative with theyre theme
P4 is the king of persona. I was so hype for 5 when it launched and then like, all these characters are loser nerds compared to everyone in p4 and it was just rough
Tekken 8 deserves it for sure, I know most people hate the modern day post launch monetization of fighting games. But holy moly did that game launch packed with content.
It's a travesty that the MVC collection is in consideration and Multiversus with it's unclear status as either a live service model or a title that needed to be classified as a 'beta' afterward. UNI2 got snubbed, for sure. I am quite saddened that there was no indie pick for fighters this year. I was glad something like Pocket Bravery was in consideration in 2023.
Yeah, Multiversus having already been there (and winning) means everyone acknowledged the game having come out THAT year, especially the people who accepted the award. Walking it back and saying that was only a beta should have them disqualified from either that year or this. On a side note, I assume SNK's appearance will consist of a trailer for Vice and Mature in KOF XV. Edit: Spelling.
Marvel Vs Capcom Fighting Collection shouldn't be on the list. It's basically Jethro Tull winning Best Metal Album Grammy over Metallica for releasing a greatest hits album.
Hades II not being nominated for most anticipated game is a crime to me, I guess it got nominated last year but the early access wasn't even out yet and it ~definitely~ makes me anticipate the release
In regards to the "Best Fighting Game" award for 2024, I still like playing Tekken 8 with friends, so I gotta give it to that, but if the show decides to give it to Multiversus a 2nd time, I'm just gonna point and laugh. TGA isn't even worth getting mad at with how bad their judges are, or some of the choices they made for nominees. Despite what TGA declares, it's the games WE love the most that truly matter in the end.
Replace Multiverses with Under Night In Birth 2 and problem solved. Fighting game predictions: SNK - KOF 15 Season 3 Vice and Mature gameplay, Fatal Fury: COTW next character reveal (possibly Renaldo). Capcom - Street Fighter 6 Mai reveal and gameplay. Bamco - Tekken 8 fourth DLC character reveal Sega - New Virtua Fighter Riot Games (God willing) - 2XKO new character reveal
Well said, those nominations are a joke (aside from Tekken 8 and Granblu versus Rising). Including Multiversus (again), Sparking Zero and a collection of older capcom fighting games (great games but not new games lol) over Undernight 2 is a joke 🙃
Did anyone else notice how on the desktop site it shows the 5 game cards lined up in a row for each fategory, which makes sense considering almost all of the categories only have 5 games nominated, BUT there are a few of them that have 6, so you actively have to scroll down in each category (which you wont know to do bc theres no indicator if a category has 5 or 6 games) in order to see every option. This could just be an oversight but it also completely rubs me the wrong way and feels like not every option gets a fair chance, which implies that its fair to begin with and not like the judges get 90% say at the end of the day and multiversus probably paying the game awards to include their game again while snubbing UNI2
Multiversus will win cause WB put all their ad money into the Game Awards. Not a fact, but that's the only reason to ever say this game should be nominated. It's one of my main games to play right now, and in no way is it the best fighting game this year.
you may not like decisions about the game awards but money has zero say on the winner. The judges are the judges and there is no payoffs or anything silly like that
Tip for a video, talk about the battoujutsu characters in fighting games, they're some of the coolest characters ever, some of them, Ukyo from Samurai Shodown, Setsuka from SoulCalibur, Johhny from Guilty Gear, Yuzuriha from Under Night, Kenshi from MK, Hibiki from Last Blade and Narmaya from GBVS.

The Cannon brothers worked on that Robots fighting game before being employed by Riot. It was in a Alpha preview stage but still got nominated by The Ad Awards. So of curse they had to pick up the Marvel collection.
I seemingly have beaten it quite a bit faster than most people, and on hard mode to boot which makes it more perplexing. I did like 95% of the side content too. Maybe i just don't sit around talking to NPC's around town the same way as other people lol
Metaphor is so amazing mannn I’m literally duin everything i can before i need to fight for the last time Louis just to savor the last bits of the game
Choosing Metaphor and calling Persona 4 the best makes you alright in my book! Also, crazy that Uni 2 and Rivals 2 got snubbed yet Multiverus gets a second shot
99% of people only watch for new game announcements anyway. The "award" gimmick is just a reason to have a second Summer Games Fest to hype up games before xmas.
Multiversus was actually extremely open about the fact that it was in open beta all those years ago inside the game itself iirc, there was even a huge warning before you entered the beta if I'm not mistaken (a very predatory beta with absurd monetization, but still, a beta) which only makes it more insane that it was even nominated in the first place back in 2022 and won against actual finished games. That being said, it still probably shouldn't have been nominated this year, considering the horrendous reception it had at launch and Under Night In Birth 2 literally being right there
You say Tekken will win for sure, but I say dragonball is the safer bet by virtue of having a bigger IP. Same reason multiversus won. Bigger Ip means more marketing.
Multiversus definitely released as a beta. It's just whether it continued to be in beta that was the question. They worded messages in a way that made it sound like Season 1 was the launch of the game, but I don't think they ever specifically said it was out of beta. It definitely seemed like it was, so when they announced the beta was shutting down 6 months after the game was launched, a lot of people were confused.
Im gonna be real. Tekken will win, for one reason: Season 1 character 4 will be revealed onstage, because Harada is like Kojima in that Geoff has sucked him off a handfull of times and it wouldnt be great PR for tekken to bring character hype, and not win an award. Plus, both dragonball and tekken are publishe by bamco, DBSZ is a dragonball IP and can sell itself with basically zero PR. 99% sure tekken will win.
8:35 - a vote for this collection is saying that Marvel vs Capcom 2 is the best fighting game of 2024. Me - yeah, it just might be the best fighting game of 2024. 8:41- and I know some of you watching this are saying "Yes! Of course! Marvel vs Capcom 2 is the best fighting game of 2024!" I feel Called Out. This was wonderful.
Sifu is one of my favorite games ever made. Its legitimately in my top 2, and depending on the day its just the top 1. Its a masterpiece. Still not a damn fighting game.
Metaphor is absolutely GOTY. Got to the true ending with like 116 hours of playtime. Defeated the four dragons and unlocked every Archetype for everyone to get the best weapons before taking on the final boss. Despite that long road, it was effing worth it!
There's also the eSports awards where you're pretty much guaranteed not to have any FGC personalities. That one could at least use separate categories so it's not all FPS and MOBA games.
Man the industry can be so out of touch sometimes. We need someone who we can trust... Rooflemonger award show when? Would it be called The Golden Monkeys!?
Its really entertaining to see the Geoff Keighley power hour in a year where no real uber prestige games came out. He literally has to settle for half of one, and it makes it so transparent that he's a wanna be Hollywood celebrity hack that gets off on the pomp and circumstance Love ya Geoff, keep doin' what ya doin', its always a riot
I can't help but notice you noticing Rivals of Aether 2 in a few videos now... 👀 I've been heavily invested in the Rivals scene for years now so I know where my highly biased vote would've gone if it made the cut. Shame that neither it nor UNI2 made it... Did you have any plans for covering Rivals on the channel in a video or two later on? I know platform fighters are outside of your typical wheelhouse on the channel, but if you've been playing the game I'd love to hear your thoughts on it!
Tbh, the 2XKO thing wasn't launched globally and it, specially, hurt me because I was hyped to try it as I've spent more than 3000 hours in League of Legends lmao. Also, UNI 2 not being nominated is a crime
I mean it's Tekken 8 or Sparking Zero for the right or wrong reasons. The GOTY nominees literally means any fighter that got a season pass could be entered for Fighting game of the year.
The fighting game of the year literally never gets stage time any year anyway, it couldn't be clearer that it's a category that they could not give less of a shit about.
Not to defend TGAs, but just to clarify: Geoff does not select the nominees for the categories. Does DLC belong there? Probably not. Does Geoff love FromSoftware? Of course. But Shadow of the Erdtree was selected by the various outlets, not Geoff himself.
Multiversus and sparking being there over uni and rivals is so sad and just shows the general lack of care of fighting games outside of the committed fgc

The show is for advertisers and content creators with 😱🤯 in the thumbnails.
I always say the only Game of the Year that should matter is your own.
@@rooflemonger Hmm For Honor seems like a unique case since it functions like a competitive online team-based experience but from what I recall surprisingly deep melee combat given the amount of options that you are given to guard break your opponent and the amount of classes you can choose, that *almost* feels like “a different FG character” when playing the round based 1v1 mode (might make it more complex from Chivalry and Mordhou but I’m not familiar with them enough to make that statement)
IMO *Some* Arena fighters share more similarities to be considered non-traditional fighters and while not focusing on balance over fan service and fun, can be competitive (Sparking Zero with its built-in ratio system for example) and mechanically deep especially at a high level, similarly to traditional fighting games, in a bigger way that meets the eye than the surface level super spamming gameplay.
@@default9314Then so is Armored Core and World of Tanks
??
If platform fighters are fighting games so are arena fighters
Having said that, sparking doesn't belong anywhere near the game awards.
I pray that Virtua Fighter 6 will be at The Game Awards.
bro maybe Ronaldo is going to appear to promote City of the Wolves XD
I'm expecting SNK to give a fatal fury trailer but also for them to drop an additional side trailer on youtube for mature/vice/the balance patch. I know some people earlier this year on the KoF pro scene were clambering for the return of KrohGOAT in the new balance patch.
its my sincerest hope that all the kof stuff drops at the beginning of december, i dont wanna wait anymore lol
"Why not bring back street fighter 6?"
because everyone knows itll sweep the fighting game category again 😂
The Games Awards are a joke every year. Undernight Inbirth not being there is so screwed.... Multiverse sucks. Period.
I'd respect them if their main appeal isn't bieng dependent on existing legendary big IPs established outside of fighting games .
@@kevingriffith6011 KILL la KILL: IF?
@@kevingriffith6011to be fair, there has always been extremely small amounts of people who are actually invested in playing these styles of games competitively and these games don’t cater to people who play games to compete and win, but as, like you said, a beer and pretzels game. this game was made entirely for people who like dragon ball and the budokai tenkaichi series.
If Multiversus or Sparking Zero wins, Geoff better have Virtua Fighter 6 or else I'm gonna be a very angry human 🤬
I just found out on Maximilian's stream last night Apparently, if you read the super fine print of the game awards nomination papers, DLC could have always won Game of the year. It just never happened before this year. I think it sucks that it got nominated, but it's not Geoff that picks the games, it's a video game journalist committee.
>video game journalist committee
We all know what that means.
video game "journalist" committee.
@@default9314 You have horrible takes, we get it.
@@jellojiggler1693 Look we get it, you are easily entertained
yooooo did NOT expect you to be fellow persona 4 enjoyer (golden best ofc) cheers!🍻
You referring to CFC2 as the 'CvS Collection' is a disservice to the real stars of the show, Power Stones 1 & 2.
those are fun minigames added to the cvs collection. Thank CvS for its power to include such games.
I'd be pissed if CvS2 wins next year instead of City of the Wolves
honestly id be happy either way lol
Oh no, what did Geoffrey do this time
I can't always control my Canadian compatriot hes crazed with power
@@rooflemonger😂😂😂😂😂😂
If platform fighters can be eligible, arena fighters should be as well. What other genre would they fall under? Action Adventure? Too vague.
This list looks like a causal gamer list just saying 😅
We all know Warner lobbied for Multiversus to win that time.
It should have been UNI 2 and Blazing Strike instead of Multiversus and MVC Collection!
Rivals 2 deserves that spot waaaay more that multiversus. Not even trying to hate, it's just the reality.
I know it is off topic but i just want to see costume 4 for sf6 lol
For real…We need more than a character birthday announcement.
Dude like it’s ridiculous we haven’t gotten it
Hades II not being nominated for most anticipated game is a crime to me, I guess it got nominated last year but the early access wasn't even out yet and it ~definitely~ makes me anticipate the release
Despite what TGA declares, it's the games WE love the most that truly matter in the end.
ngl if that’s the case khaos reigns should be nominated they dropped a whole story multiple characters
Yeah but Khaos Reigns sucked, sadly xD
I'm exactly at 6:55 while typing, multiverse had an open beta, 2xko is a closed beta, i think that difference is significant enough.
Replace Multiverses with Under Night In Birth 2 and problem solved.
Fighting game predictions:
SNK - KOF 15 Season 3 Vice and Mature gameplay, Fatal Fury: COTW next character reveal (possibly Renaldo).
Capcom - Street Fighter 6 Mai reveal and gameplay.
Bamco - Tekken 8 fourth DLC character reveal
Sega - New Virtua Fighter
Riot Games (God willing) - 2XKO new character reveal
I didnt know Sifu existed
Well said, those nominations are a joke (aside from Tekken 8 and Granblu versus Rising). Including Multiversus (again), Sparking Zero and a collection of older capcom fighting games (great games but not new games lol) over Undernight 2 is a joke 🙃
I'm sure there's a marketing guy working for TGA who just gets a perverse joy from searching up videos like this to laugh at.
Rooflemonger is a real one. Loves Persona 4 and knows Metaphor wins Game of the Year easily!
HOT TAKE.
I prefer GBVSR over Tekken 8.
But I am a smooth brain monkey.
Will having nominated dlc as game of the year force devs to actually make goooooood dLc??? I want the days of gta 4 + rdr1 type of dlc. PLEASE! Thanks fromsoft tho for keeping up with some good dlc tho
The Cannon brothers worked on that Robots fighting game before being employed by Riot. It was in a Alpha preview stage but still got nominated by The Ad Awards. So of curse they had to pick up the Marvel collection.
I agree with your take on Metaphor, great game
You beat Metaphor within 58 hours? I already broke the 100h mark on my playthrough albeit I'm near the end.
Rooflemonger: soooo... Tekken
*Asure lake: moonstriders starts playing*
Not complaining, its just funny how you do this every time
Alright roofle youve convinced me. Im getting metaphor. It betterrrrr be good or else!
I REALLY thought you were about to sync your "Hello and Welcome" to Gonzo's mouth
game awards is now the oscars. friends just patting each other on the back to make more money
That being said, it still probably shouldn't have been nominated this year, considering the horrendous reception it had at launch and Under Night In Birth 2 literally being right there
WB slid TGA some money for this MVS nomination
You say Tekken will win for sure, but I say dragonball is the safer bet by virtue of having a bigger IP. Same reason multiversus won. Bigger Ip means more marketing.
Multiversus definitely released as a beta. It's just whether it continued to be in beta that was the question. They worded messages in a way that made it sound like Season 1 was the launch of the game, but I don't think they ever specifically said it was out of beta. It definitely seemed like it was, so when they announced the beta was shutting down 6 months after the game was launched, a lot of people were confused.
Im gonna be real. Tekken will win, for one reason:
Season 1 character 4 will be revealed onstage, because Harada is like Kojima in that Geoff has sucked him off a handfull of times and it wouldnt be great PR for tekken to bring character hype, and not win an award.
Of course! Marvel vs Capcom 2 is the best fighting game of 2024!"
I feel Called Out. This was wonderful.
Please god Killer Instinct 4 announcement
30 years anniversary for god sake
At this point, I'm convinced Keighley deliberately fucks with the Game Awards categories to farm engagement.
Everyone is always complaining every game awards lol somethings never change.
Uni2 is oogly, reply with monke if you agree🐒
If MVC collection doesn't win I'm walking from the Midwest to California and slapping the microphone out of whoever is currently talking's hand.
Its really entertaining to see the Geoff Keighley power hour in a year where no real uber prestige games came out. He literally has to settle for half of one, and it makes it so transparent that he's a wanna be Hollywood celebrity hack that gets off on the pomp and circumstance
Love ya Geoff, keep doin' what ya doin', its always a riot
I can't help but notice you noticing Rivals of Aether 2 in a few videos now... 👀
I've been heavily invested in the Rivals scene for years now so I know where my highly biased vote would've gone if it made the cut. Shame that neither it nor UNI2 made it...
Did you have any plans for covering Rivals on the channel in a video or two later on? I know platform fighters are outside of your typical wheelhouse on the channel, but if you've been playing the game I'd love to hear your thoughts on it!
I watch for the reveals not the awards show we been known they’re not genuine.
MK11 was up for fighting game of the year 2 years in a row. First year lost to smash, but 2nd year (post aftermath) it won.
Was really hoping Mortal Kombat one chaos reigns would be nominated, considering Elden ring DLC was nominated for game of the year
12:16 - Much grace very dignity
wow
Another vid Another W
Just look at the best ongoing games list. Basically if you get nomited for TGA OR EVEN WIN its a stain on your reputation
Multiversus and sparking being there over uni and rivals is so sad and just shows the general lack of care of fighting games outside of the committed fgc
do GBVSR and UNI2 even count as new games tho? they feel more like updates to me, rather then fully new releases in a game series.
Then again, Roof done some schilling him damn self, no?
