The silliness of the fans (even calling themselves "clownverse"🤦🏼‍♀️), really tells me one thing: these two book series aren't for me, at all.
Anyway, YA never was my cup of tea. I enjoy good middle school fantasy from time to time, for lighter readings, but at least it's written well, most often than not.

Considering this show tries to smush two books together, explain the backstories of 7+ characters, and set up a story following two separate book series in just eight 45 minute episodes, my mind was blown. To be fair, if the people who are running at someone while shooting at them are not military/ cop (trained people) then the behavior is kinda appropriate. That behavior can be seen in a lot of gangs/ criminal shootings where the shooter ends up shooting a person from around 10 feet away (sometimes even less). The issue is mainly attached to untrained people using guns.

Thank you!! It's really great to see an honest review from another adult! As a big SoC fan, I just wasn't very impressed with the show (in fact, I could barely make it through the first few episodes). There was way too much heavy-handed exposition, the writing is seriously on the nose / cliche (way worse than the books imo, despite the YA genre), and the dialogue felt pretty forced and hasty. I was also pretty upset with Kaz's character arc. He's meant to start out as an enigma and a mastermind, and he doesn't appear soft to anyone but Inej -- and that's only AFTER he nearly loses her in SoC. She's a catalyst for his emotions (he would never tell her he needed her outright like that, like whattttt). It felt like they took his first person POV and decided that was how he was meant to behave outwardly, but the whole point is that his actions are in conflict with his emotions. I do think they did a decent job on the set design and costuming though, and Jesper seems pretty accurate.

Also I agree that the worlduilding was rushed at times but it's understandable, they have a lot of world and not too many episodes to set it up before the plot needs to get going. However I'm going to disagree with the Nina and Matthias plot line being superfluous. Besides it being practically lifted straight off the books line by line (which as a fan is always lovely to see) it's also going to become very important to future storylines, so maybe it felt out of place now but it was necessary set up for the future of the plot.

Hello! Absolutely MASSIVE Bardugo fan checking in. Just wanted to say as a die-hard fan, I was fully blown away by the show and it was more phenomenal than I ever could have hoped for. The costume designer needs a huge bonus and raise because I was thoroughly impressed with the work they put into the show. The actors/acting was the best part of the show which I'm really glad for, because the books are extremely character driven.
On the Nina and Matthias subplot, I'm actually thrilled they included it the way they did because their enemies-to-friends/lovers relationship would have been way too much to force into season 2 alone and it would have really strained the writers to make it fit as organically as possible. And it's a great idea to set it up in season 1 because the payoff in season 2 will be THAT much better because of it. It's not a bad idea to leave some ends open to really entice viewers into watching season 2 and I think they did the best possible set up they could in the timeframe they were given.
I won't comment as much for the love triangle bit you mentioned in the review because of spoilers, but also because I'm one of the crazies that's into it LMAO. Great review Daniel! I'm so so SO happy you enjoyed the show.

i'm a big fan of the books & i absolutely LOVED every second of this show - but also agree with pretty much everything you said here!
eight episodes was far from enough to fit all the story and characters as they deserved, but the showrunner did confirm that they didn't have a huge budget. as usual i think netflix wanted to play it safe. but considering the magnitude of the show (huge cast, they had to travel a bunch, the set design, the costumes, the special effects) i think you can see they really gave it their all and succeeded in making it as great as possible.
as a fan, i'm happy we got to see nina and matthias, but i also think their story felt completely separated from the rest, plus it was very rushed (again, should have had more episodes). i'm sure for people who didn't read the books it'll be hard to see the point in including them! which is sad because their story and specifically matthias' arc is one of the best things in SOC.
as for the editing of the show, some things i found a little annoying like how they kept using up time to repeat flashbacks and scenes we'd already seen (assuming because no more budget?), and also some of the transitions between scenes felt a little silly, like those quick swipe motions from one scene to the other, i don't think it fit the mood at all.
overall, i think it's a GREAT sign that the only not-so-great parts about this show can mostly be attributed to a lack of budget / more episodes, because it means this can be truly amazing in the next seasons if only netflix believes in them (which will depend on how many new fans this gets, of course!). but the cast and characters are absolutely the best part about this!!!

The show overshadows the books. I had to pull all my inner strength to finish the book series. I will say Crooked Kingdom was a blast to read. I stayed up until 5am watching the show. bravo netflix perfect casting choices 👏

So, I watched the first three episodes so far, and I gotta admit, I'm very pleasantly surprised. I expected to not like this at all, and... I rather like it! The sets are amazing, the acting is well done, the YA tropes are not intolerable... I'll personally stick it on an 8/10, which is... unexpected!

I LOVED it. I have been wanting to read the books for the longest time and after this amazing first season I absolutely HAVE to.
I love all the characters, including the Nina storyline, the actors were so good, oh my god 😍

The pacing in the show was terrible. 😭 I feel like we needed more exploration of the world, from Fjerda and Shu to why West Ravka wanted independence. Nina and Matthias definitely NEED to be there the prequel of their plot leads into Six of Crows but it was really poorly placed 😭. I liked the magic tho I hope they use the magic in the Avatar show. Also yea the writing is so … not great BUT IM SO HYPE FOR SEASON 2 BECAUSE NIKOLAI 😭😩💚

The Six of Crows duology is one of my favorite book series, but I didn't really like The Shadow and Bone trilogy. So, I was initially sceptical of this show and how they would combine these two series.
I binged this show yesterday and overall, I am actually super happy with it. I think I might like the Shadow and bone part of the show more than the book trilogy. The characters weren't as annoying (especially Mal and Alina) and other negative aspects of the books weren't as prevelant.
Because this followed the storyline of the trilogy and the crows were just incorporated here, I wanted more of them. (But that's just because I love them so much and wanted them explored more. I am actually happy with how they connected the different series. ) The crow moments were also my favorite of the show. Having said this, I understand that this wasn't possible and the show already feels super rushed at times. I even wanted more time with charcters from Shadow and Bone, like David and Genya. I think I remember that their budget was just not big enough to make a good and appealing show with more episodes.
At times, I felt like the storylines were combined in really plot-convenient ways, which I didn't really like.
I didn't have a problem with the Nina/Matthias plotline though! Maybe that's because I love these characters already, but their storyline was necessary for future seasons. We need to know Nina's and Matthias' backstory and how they then meet the crows.
But I really liked it. I loved the performances and am definitely excites for future seasons (hopefully). It'll be cool to see Nikolai and Wylan and I'm interested in what ways they'll combine the storylines then.

I really loved the cast, and that's by far what I cared about the most. I just wanted to see all the characters I adore hang out on screen together, and I got that in spades (even though they were sometimes drowning in exposition.)You are right that Kit as Jesper is the standout, but I truly liked everyone. I'm so happy with the show over all! Had a great time, and will jump on season 2 the moment it's out.

I didn't feel like the chemistry stood out substantially. I think all the actors got really meaty characters to play around with, a lot of the tropes turned upto 11 so they can just swing for the fences. Shout out to production too, those sets and world are so good that the actors would have been locked in without any difficulty
The Nina Matthias plot line is pure fan service because in the books their history is sprinkled in and revealed slowly. Showing it all off so early probably takes away the impact of some of the future scenes but it is a choice
    Hope u r well daniel

I’m not familiar with the source material and just kind of stumbled upon this show. Albert I thoroughly enjoyed it. I continue to be blown away by the production value and quality of these TV series. It makes me very hopeful for the upcoming Wheel of Time show!

I went in only knowing six of crows and not the Grisha trilogy. Is Mal's characters only there for Alina?? He felt so one dimensional. I hope that in season two, we get more into depth with him regarding story and emotion and not just "a macho man only there to save girl and nothing else."

Mal is a bit bland in the grisha trilogy, he’s very much improved upon in the show to be honest. He doesn’t have much to him in the books sadly.

One of the things I really liked about it was that the world felt so real to me-in terms that you get a real sense of the different cultures/races. As a non-reader of the series, I super got into the map and had a distinct feeling for each place. I also liked the magic system- mysterious enough and with enough logic in its use. Liked the whole conversation with Mal on how a Grisha was getting less and less valuable as technology progressed. Segue, but it makes me super curious and slightly hopeful to how Wheel of Time will be adapted for both aspects- cultures and magic system.. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

I find the critiques of the show are going to be the same for basically all of the YA shows I've tried to watch. I thought the Irregulars had all of the same problems except I found the acting bad as well. I have tried to get into these types of shows but I must not be close enough to the target audience. My wife and I are going to try this show out but not really expecting to like it.

i agree with you totally on the part that some plots felt a little bit rushed. A few more episodes would have been great and I normally love short series but this one needed a little bit more time i think. But I loved it and i hope that there will be a second season and that that one will be even better.

We have been absolutely blessed! The sourcematerial was transformed and improved on in a beautiful way and as you said it seemed like a passion project for everyone included in the making of the show. My hope for season two is a less cheesy portraial of some of the relationships (Nina/Matthias, Inej/Kaz), a bit more grounded. Plus I just hope they won't overdo Jespers quirkiness to the point he becomes a meme but i think we're in good hands here. Really solid show, overall very impressive! Some future plots are super fun or heartwrenching in a good way so i'm all in!
Also a quick response to your review, i was dreading it a bit because of your opinion on six of crows but you reviewed the show in a critical but thoughtful and fair way which I appreciate! x
