I was about to dive in and change out the wheel joints, pop the cover and check the locker, etc because of the loud popping/snap to center and difficult turning at slow speeds but I figured I would check out youtube first. Thanks for the video, saved me a lot of time.
I had power trax Lock Rights (same as spartan or any other “lunchbox” locker) in my k10 I liked them. Great off road and I didn’t even notice them on road unless I hit the gas. It liked to go sideways around turns, intentionally though. The most important thing to having good street manners with these lockers is having manual hubs. You won’t notice the lockers if the hubs are free.
Unfortunately the manual hub conversion kit for a dana 30 is like $1500 and for that price you would just get a selectable locker or a better front axle that already has manual hubs
Not sure if he posted an update, but I just got an Aussie Locker (currently installing) and I believe the 'break-in' period for that is 600 miles. So maybe once it sets in it will be quieter. The other option would be to run a gear-oil like 75w-140 if the vehicle can handle it. For my 04 WJ Grand Cherokee, I can run 75w-140 front and rear for towing or extreme conditions, which I consider offroading to be. Once I finish install I will see how it sounds. Thats why for the front i decided to get the Powertrax no slip which is suppose to be a lot quieter, by using a synchro. Would have gotten one for the rear too but they didn't sell for my application.
I have Spartan lockers in both ends of my XJ and it doesn't pop like that when I turn, it just clicks like it should. You may want to check the u joints. I am also using 85w140 gear oil.
The longer I drive with them the quieter I get. The heavier gear oil will make them quieter. The loud pop is just from unlocking when the front is under tension
yea, should just be a little click,click,click... not *BANG* is there a 242 transfer case in this jeep ? i think they are "all time 4wd" maybe.?. it might be binding up and locking if the transfer case is locking up or torque is applied to the locker
I've had one for About 5 years now works great never had a pop. Looks likes something is binding. A joint in our axle might be through issue. Those u joints usually show theyre bad while Turing sharp under load
Daniel w yea, I found this video looking for a solution to my axle problem for one of my jeeps with open axles.. turned out to be a axle shaft u-joint seizing up and popping, but only around sharp turns at low speeds. (I have a spartan locker in a different Jeep. Definitely doesn’t make this noise, only little clicking)
In 2wd every ‘pop’ in the video also showed the tire jerk slightly. He has a front end issue, or a problem with the locker. The normal ratchet clicks are absent.
The tires jerk slightly because they are on pavement and when they bind before the locker releases, the rubber on the ground twists. It's similar to when you turn the steering wheel one way in park and it goes back the other way when you let go. It's simply the tread twisting a little then releasing the twist
I agree with this. I also have a lunchbox locker in the front of my truck which does not have manual locking hubs. The hubs are always connected to the axle shafts in my truck, same as this XJ. In 2WD you hear just a slight clicking when turning. It is barely audible and I doubt my passengers or a valet would ever notice it. The loud pops and the tire jerking shown in the parking lot in this video doesn't seem normal to me. With the Aussie locker I bought you set the clearance with shims to make sure axle gears and cam gears are properly spaced. The Spartan locker also has a step to set the clearance. See "Center Gap Measurement" under the "Installing your Spartan Locker" section. The instructions recommend 0.145 to 0.170". This spacing is critical to ensure the locker engages and disengages properly. www.randysworldwide.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Spartan_Locker_Installation_Instructions.pdf All of these lunch box lockers work the same. When there is a torque on the differential carrier (through the gear set from the driveshaft) , the cross pin pushes out the cam gets to engage the axle gears. This is what forces the two sets of gears together and locks the axle shafts together. When there is no torque on the differential carrier, the cam gears can be pushed together to allow the axle shafts to rotate differentially. There should be no torque on the front differential carrier in 2WD. To me it seems like the front locker is engaging/binding in 2WD in the parking lot. I can't think of why this would happen except the clearance is too tight. I would at least pull off the cover and check it.
Not mine. Just installed a Torq locker in my rear 8.25. Like his in the video.. going at Road speed, everything‘s fine, either locked up or slight ratcheting noise as should be. But like his -turn tight going slowly pop! and bang. Relearning how to drive it as I can induce or lessen this happening. I also have a manual. Torque locker says give it some break in time and run a heavier oil. Hopefully it breaks in -it sucks.
The springs! The springs are way to strong! If you drive mostly on tarred roads pleeease weaken the 4x springs which keeps the ratchets soft-locked!!! You going to wear out and even break things like that. Never mind the clicking noise.

So in my mind the front won't matter unless your in 4x4 but correct me if I'm wrong coz I already got the rear one ordered and contemplating the front as I type this lol
The issue seems to be wi th it in the front wheels that's why I wouldnt put them one in the front. That being said how could your wheel not wobble at all at high speed even with at tires.. people need to remember it's an offroad tire it's not smooth on the street forever
Just because a tire isn't a street tire doesn't mean it will wobble. A good tire properly balanced and a well maintained vehicle will ride smooth. The Goodyear Duratrac tire is a fantastic tire used by many OEM applications such as the Raptor and Power Wagon

In order for the clicking and clacking sound to become less after driving it for awhile must mean that something has worn on the locker. While these may be effective off the road, I take the change in sound to be not a good sign.
