I purchased a 3DS XL Samus Aran Edition JUST for Samus Returns, last year, (2020). That was the first time I played a Metroid game since Super Metroid. (I can not play first person games) I thought it was AMAZING. I purchased a couple other games for the 3DS and returned them all. The only game worth playing on the 3DS, in my opinion, IS Samus Returns. It is MIND BOGGLING that it's taking nearly TWENTY YEARS to get another 2D/2.5D Metroid. After all, (and I say this OVER and OVER), there is an ENTIRE GENRE named after this amazing title,... and yeah, I'm aware of the Vania side of it, but Metroid is far superior to all of the Vanias combined, IMHO. If this is #5, I TRULY HOPE they are already working on 6 & 7 as well. If it's going to be another 20 years after this installment, the world might end before its made. Say a prayer!!! @Grungeboy What he means is that (Spoilers for the Fusion intro) Samus gets infected by the X parasite at the very beginning of the game, and she nearly dies but they manage to save her by surgically removing parts of her armor and injecting her with a vaccine derived from Metroid cells. It’s why she spends most of the game being mortally weak to the X-clones of her old self, because it’s using Ice Beam and she’s now weak to cold like Metroids. Prime 1: A creepy alarm blares with the image of Samus' visor cracked before she slumps over dead. Prime 2: A realistic heart is show as the beating slows down before going out. Prime 3: Is inside her helmet and you see blood smearing on the glass.

The option not to save has always been there for Metroid games. When you die you go back to the last save. You never save, you go back to the beginning.
@@jonathanmarin1250 Not in Returns, when you die in Returns, you essentially start before the room you died. Making death such a non issue. This was especially noticeable during the tough Metroid Fights.

While you wait I suggest to start with Metroid Zero Mission for the GBA, it's a remake of the first game. the rest of the series is: Samus Returns on 3DS (remake of 2) Super Metroid on SNES Metroid Fusion. Also Metroid Prime Trilogy on the wii, it has the three first person games of the series, they are very good.
Honestly, what @data4664 said, play Super Metroid first. It's an incredible exploration experience, great level and gameplay designs that teach players how to explore and get better at the game without a "navi" (reference to Zelda) telling you what to do. On top of that, it empowers players to really feel like they are progressing in the game and getting more badass. To move faster, jump higher, shoot cooler beams, and take on bigger obstacles, all while rewarding exploration of the large worlds where the games take place. This new Dread game builds on that exploration, learning, non-linear gameplay/story, and empower the player to really succeed in the world and conquer the planet. Definitely a fun time.
If they wanted a best seller game they should be more ambitious. Making what looks like a indie project with a slapped on Metroid title barely looking uncomfortable despite a name like dread (fake shivers) isnt the way to catch the big bucks. Looks like a 20-30 dollar game...
@@warlorddk2070 idk when I saw Samus getting chased down and trying to escape death from a wild robot I was pretty scared, also the game over animations are brutal. @@starknightlumina8680 It’s quite possible after all Samus Returns did hint at a faction of rogue Chozo in the data logs. I hope the other areas look more alive and diverse. That's one of the things that Super Metroid and the Prime games did very well that other metroid games have not.
I disagree, the Prime games and Fusion had loads of unique environments, and even Samus Returns adapted Metroid II's setting into a wide range of caves, temples, and labs--not to mention the gut-wrenching Metroid nest. So far, the areas in Dread have a ton of unique set pieces like statues, machinery, wildlife, lakes, and the bone-dry remains of various creatures.
weve seen parts of the first 2 sections, and through small clips we've seen a chozo temple and a richly designed forest area. maybe instead of prejudging the game, play it yourself and see what it has to offer
While this isn't entirely why, a big part of it in my eyes is poorly timed releases. Super Metroid released on the snes just as the n64 was getting started, Zero Mission came out on the GBA right before the DS came around, and Samus Returns released on the 3ds when the Switch was already like 6 months old or something. I can't necessarily speak for the other titles tho. Prime did well at the time, but thats relative, since the Gamecube was losing the console war in that generation. This game however has a lot of intrigue given its long history with fans, and a wait time that could make Half Life 3 jealous. And since its on the switch, its bound to do well, given that this console practically prints money
Thanks Nintendo, really exciting!! Except you can't play the previous game in the series cause you are not offering legacy content. Dont do Samus wrong. Let us be able to play the complete series.
One of my favorite things about Samus Returns was the way the "play area" in the foreground was actually an extension of the background. Getting to see how all the surface structures interconnected gave an amazing sense of scale and immersion; to the point that Samus Returns was like the only game on 3DS that actually made me want to play with the 3D effect enabled. I love the fact that they're keeping that design aspect going strong for this title. And it really showed how powerful it is with how often it was mentioned by the hosts.

I've never played the Metroid games, but I'm shocked they don't sell well. They all look amazing
I'm eagerly awaiting the day we finally get to play this!
6:07 that whole cinematic looks soooo cool!!!
barring the frame drops, I agree!
