Here one hears the calibre of artistry that Margaret Price could display even at an early stage of her career . Amazing to think that had Teresa Berganza not cancelled a performance as Cherubino and Price stepped in to replace her it may have been even more years before she sang a role at Covent Garden. I read that Solti was not keen on her and so for quite a while although her career was blossoming elsewhere she had to be content with understudying at ROH. Later she sang some wonderful performances there. Such a glorious and sensitive singer.

Her voice was so pristinely beautiful. It is a great lost to music she never performed more Verdi Operas. She would have been the greatest _Leonora Trovatore_ in the modern age.

It is quite phenomenal how perfect her Mozart style was even then!

I concur with the opinion below at least as far as this aria is concerned. Is there no German version with this singer available on You Tube? This performance is among the best I have heard right up there with Irmgard Seefried. Very pretty & too bad she in a few years became so heavy. It likely was a factor in her relatively early death from heart failure. Similar repertoire with Te Kanawa whose singing, for me, has not the same degree of warmth as Price. Just a personal opinion.

Are you sure this wasn't from English National Opera? I find it hard to believe Covent Garden, even 50 years ago, would perform Mozart in other than the original language.

Covent Garden did some operas in English in the 60's. The MET still does ZAUBERFLÖTE in English. The reason is the lengthy dialogue and the comedy. Mozart was often cast with British singers at CG, so the dialogue in German was not going to be easy for anyone. Maybe more important it was just to help the audience understand the text.

    Beautiful voice.
    Beautiful girl.
    Unfortunately she became so fat.
I first heared her in the Cuvilliestheater in Munich in Die Entführung aus dem Serail.
This is nearly 50 years ago.

Lovely, but I just can't stand opera in English.
