Cortez is one of those attention-seeking, self-aggrandizing refs that continuously ruin fights with their egos. Fair-but firm? Child, please!! First, off, he inexplicably separated the fighters for no reason in the middle of a flurry, acting as if he was awarding Soto the TKO...then waved them back together. And then, as usual, he over-extends his presence in the fight and DQ's an honest fighter for a harmless cuffing half blow, that was thrown as a bi-product of the actual fight...and not to hurt the downed fighter. Cortez = total hack!!!
Add to the fact that Emmanuel Steward was coming unglued also, something that you hardly ever see out of him, even more so than his post-fight emotions after Lewis-Holyfield 1…
maybe im being a little biased with Joe Cortez, but the whole thing looked really shady. Cortez has aways been known for being "fair, but firm" if he wouldve wanted to disqualify Soto, he would've done it right there and there. He wouldve never gone to any of the ringside officials to debate the issue, or whatever. Honestly, if the ref is the only one in the ring that can disqualify a fighter, why was Cortez going around the ring looking for ringside officials? I dont get it.Or maybe im trying to see something that it just isnt there. Anyways...bad call
He's asking other to validate his unsure decision. To look for uproval. Even him is not sure for his decisions so to look like it's not only coming from him, he consult that wrong decision to other even he knows that he still have the final decision who are going to win. He did that just to make it look like everyone agree with his decision.
My take: it's _very_ obvious that Lorenzo used the technical foul of a glancing shot of the top of his head when he was hunched over with both knees on the canvas as a way to flat-out give up. He was already doing as much in the corner collapsing to his knees at the end while Soto marched in not even throwing anything. It should have been a one-point deduction for the foul, and then if he can't continue either from the cuts or the accumulated punishment (TKO), NOT from the glancing foul. Plus Emmanuel Steward is right, when a guy is continually squatting and leaning forward during the fight and then takes a knee, it's _very_ difficult to see that and provide the restraint needed to stop throwing, especially when the ref has shown to be indecisive in the fight. A guy a knee on the canvas still has his head at your waist. In the heat of the moment you may think he could just be SQUATTING, and then come up and blast you. It's not like if a guy is on knees AND HANDS, or flat-out on his face or back. THAT'S hitting a guy when he's down. An egregious foul worthy of DQ. A knee down is a signal to THE REF to "save my ass". You do it and you cover up. Who should be there immediately with hands on the arms of the attacker. So leniency should be given in that instance. A ref with good judgment will display that.
Soto lost because he beat Lorenzo too much. What a joke. Lorenzo realized he's a little wooden shed and hurricane Soto was in front of him, so he decided that his only option to win is putting his best Academy Award performance. Because of this bullshit Soto never got a fight he deserved, Manny Pac.
I remember this fight and I was just a little kid and I knew that Soto was robbed. I miss the old HBO Boxing fight nights it was a good time to be a Boxing fan
Are you kidding me??? Soto won!!! Fair and Square... Lorenzo just faking all of it.... For some reason, when announced him the winner, he sure got up and all cleared.!!! Soto was punching, he fell on the canvas at the same time punching. It's part of boxing. Lorenzo scammed..
All I could keep thinking is "why is Lorenzo just sitting there bleeding all over the fucking place?" But I guess he wanted to sit there and look as hurt and pathetic as possible so they'd give him the disqualification
It's all about who's betting big money on the over unders who's betting on the winner ,ect more than the Fighters if I didn't know any I'd say Joe Cortez had alot of money on Lorenzo
Cortez have done that in alot of fights just like the bs that Mayweather did against Ortiz cuz he never sed to fight again and Mayweather cheap shot Ortiz and after that Ortiz was never the same and he was going to beat Mayweather that's why he did that cheap shot
@@luispollitolopez2284 well, he did give the command to fight, he actually said "box" which is the same command. What looked bad was that he wasn't even paying attention, he for some reason was looking at the time keeper and didn't see either punch.

24:42 that was nice
Joe Cortez es anti mexicano…
Is it possible that the concussion occurred sometime during the beating he was taking 🤷🏼♀️
"Watch it, watch it, watch itttt..... Right there!..." *crickets* then he just goes ham with the sarcasm hahaha

La peor cagada de Joe Cortez vs un boxeador mexicano, y vaya que tuvo varias
Cortez is consistently the worst ref I've ever seen. He's indecisive and doesn't know how to control a fight
23:16 Honestly, I think Steve Smoger was the best in this era, and Mills Lane was the best all-time!
