When Spanish filmmaker Alejandro Amenábar made the excellent THE OTHERS (2001) he composed the score BEFORE he shot the movie and played it on set to set the mood for the actors. It was common for directors of silent movies to have music on set while shooting a film - sometimes with a small orchestra. Chaplin famously scored his films, most notably his final “silent” yet first sound films, CITY LIGHTS (1931)
Great stuff - great channel. Max Steiner scored many Bette Davis movies for Warner Bros. When shooting a scene for Dark Victory she told her director, “am I going up these stairs or is Max Steiner, there isn’t room for booth of us” 😎
Awesome video. Short enough to not be a documentary, but still includes more info than the rest of the internet. Also, does anyone know what the first "song" in a movie is? As far as radio music goes, what was the first radio to cinema for music?
L'Assassinat du Duc de Guise from 1908 is a much earlier silent film with a composed musical score written by Camille Saint-Saens. D.W. Griffith, although considered the auteur of Birth of a Nation, hired Joseph Carl Breil to compose his score and worked closely with him. Breil gets no mention in the credits of BOAN.
Some people know where they were when Kennedy was shot, I know where I was when I saw the first Star Wars and heard the Luke Skywalker theme. I knew we were into a new age. Also, you didn't mention Thomas Newman.
The music from Star Wars shown during the scene of Luke watching the twin sunset on Tatooine isn’t Luke’s Theme. Rather, it’s Ben’s Theme / The Force Theme.
I am confused tho was Birth of a Nation the first to have a score or was it King Kong? Using this as reference for a school paper so I would love to know the specifics lol
Birth of a Nation. I misspoke. King Kong was the first to have an entire film scored by one composer Max Steiner. who scored multiple tracks for the film. Apologies for the confusion.

@ Thank you for this link. I really appreciate it.
How is Ennio Morricone not included in this list
The list is of Modern composers who stand upon the shoulders of those who came before them such as Ennio Morricone.
