Marias is another big failure of the Nobel Prize Committee to have awarded the prestigious Nobel Prize for Literature !!!.... He deserved the honour all the way ! I don't know when they will start getting the truly literary wonders for the Prize like Kafka Joice Frost Nabokov Borges Woolf and many more......
The truth is that the swords in Don Quixote did come down. The Vizcaine cut off half of don Quixote's ear, and he fucked up The Vizcaine's face, and would have killed him if it wasn't for the pleading of the woman he was guarding, to whom don Quixote said that he would only spare The Vizcaine on the condition that she ordered him to go to El Toboso and to offer himself to Dulcinea so that she could do with him as she pleased. I'm shocked that Marías could have forgotten that.
Where is this conference was hosted? Why part of the public are laughing... They look a bit simple... I hope wasnt a group of vulnerable people though low intelectual people have the right to be wherever..

Tienes razón en lo que dices, pero no seamos tan duros, no creo que Marías lo dijera en serio. El tipo hablaba perfectamente inglés, vivió en EE.UU. y Reino Unido, fue traductor y tenía verdadera devoción por Shakespeare. Es quizá una boutade sin maldad.

But each language is a treasure of all the richness that it needs (of which it is always capable) and this richness should not be sought in comparison but, precisely, in difference. It is what differentiates Spanish from English that makes them singular and, therefore, unique. Which is, incomparable. The strength lies in the difference.
This interviewer is a disaster. It must be very trying for someone of the genius of Marias to have to deal with someone of this poor and totally uninteresting intelligence. NYPL certainly could have found a better choice. Marias, nevertheless, is consistently brilliant.
I'm Spanish, English Filology Student. I've got to say Maria's English is fantastic, though I think It lacks some adaptation and inner observation towards hiding his Spanish nuances. He is an excellent writer, I am reading 'Tu rostro mañana' and it's full of presition, psychologycal acuretness, patience, and worked reflection.

I am Spanish too and I have the English Philology degree too and I have to say that Marías is probably one of the best writers of Spain ( I have read almost all of his books, fiction and non-fiction)and, why not? of the world. He is not there to show is ability to speak English ( that he obviously has it) but to speak about books, literature and writers and English is just the vehicle to handle the interview. That's all. There is not any necessity to be criticising all the time.

What's more, not only did he speak English, but also French, German and Italian. He translated some of his books, which he first wrote in Spanish, into English, and they're beautifully translated. I read "Thus bad begins" and I think it's more beautiful than the Spanish version, "Así empieza lo malo". And, of course, one could notice he was from Spain when he spoke English, but there's nothing wrong in it. He could get across his message when he spoke English, and I think that's the most important thing. And, please, philology is written with "ph", given the fact that it's got Greek origins. That "ph" comes from this Greek letter "φ", actually.
