When you were talking about castles that have these, I immediately remembered Carcassonne! I loved it when I visited the South of France, very well kept fortification and huge.
You are right, tiles were undeed more common in South France, and Violet le Duc chose slate when the XIXth century refaction, a choice that was later debated. However some evidence (at least an old bas-relief I've seen) seem to suggest that the tower tops slopes were rebuilt quite pointy during the the middleages, influenced by northern architecture. With slopes so steep it might reasonably have been covered with slate by the end of the middle ages. Don't take my words for it I'm not an historian but I remember reading articles about it some time ago. Thanks for your input!
I am new to model making and I have a lot to learn. Your video explains the techniques in creating the fine details to create a realistic model. I look forward to seeing more of your videos. Thank you for sharing.
I just found your channel today, so new sub. Super impressed. Its not just your builds look great. You are not doing generic builds that look like everyone's else. I really dig your style and the videos are very informative to the process of how you got there. Looking forward to watching all your videos.
Amazing work! I built a hoarding for the original Warhammer Castle that came out back in the late 80s and just found it last month, still intact. Not nearly as detailed as your model, but good inspiration. Can’t wait to use your technique for a new one. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks. Jeremy from Black Magic Craft did a vid a while back I think his vid might be in the links at the end of the vid, but yeah hoarding are not that commons.
Very nice build. You have great attention to detail. I do have one piece of advice. I saw that when you made the project longer than the materials, as you mentioned, you added on the extra length to one end. It would be a good deal more structurally sound if you staggered the planks with the extra bit on the opposite side on every other row. It would be a little more effort, but if the seems where visible you wouldn't notice anything amiss.
That my good sir is a true craftsmans workspace, not one of these fancy pants utube channel prop spaces. As the project progresses there's less and less space till you have to stop and do a clean up. Amazing forethought and plannning, looks fantastic.
Arthur Hutchinson thanks! Yeah like most if us i'm messy when i get creative😊. However lately I tried to be a little more tidy to spare the peripheral vision of the viewer, since a good tutorial should be clear and easy to follow.
Landvaettr's Lair That's true. Sometimes the spare tools, and materials can be a hindrance to the ease of following along. I live in an area of new england that makes acquiring various materials either a serious chore, or an extreme expense (although the internet has helped mitigate that). So I like seeing bits made from everyday items instead of store bought molds/base pieces. I've recently come back to the tabletop/rpg/wargame scene after a rather long hiatus, and as such am still on the fence about buying various extras, so if possible I like to craft my own when I can. Heck I don't even like buying mini paints, tend to use craft acrylics (which while they tend to be lower quality, they also force me to learn to manipulate the paint more and thus gain valuable experience, instead of using a purpose made paint which I suppose do have their place). Little long winded, sorry. Keep up the great work.
Yeah I totally agree. I like to craft stuff using recycled stuff and easy to obtain materials, even if experience told me appropriate tools are essential if you don't wanna spent too much unconsidered amounts of time or sweat using some materials. I too only use miniature paint for minis (and i dont have that much tones, I usually make mixes) Acrylic's defenetly the best for terrain. Easy to use, solid and cheap.
hey Land, thought id head on over and check out your channel since you have been so positive (especially during the live stream), and i'm blown away by both the quantity and quality of your videos! serious quality work on this build my man! looking forward to checking the rest!
On the floor planks, if you stagger the ends. It will not only look more realistic, you don't have to worry about the length. You can standardize to what ever you want. That will help with propriety making it harder, or easier, to mix your products with other manufacturers.
First of all, excellent video! I will have to make some of these. For the build, would it make sense to paint the foam (rock) before assembling? Also, thank you so much for showing your mistakes. It helps us noobs feel not so bad when we screw up and shows us more of what not to do. It is very helpful.
I'd almost finished my castle wall in foamcore and planned my hoarding when I saw this video pop up - the trick with the aluminium foil came just at the right time, thank you! I hope my hoarding looks as good as yours, I'm building a partial wall and tower purely to display some figures on and give my medieval army a nice backdrop, but I thought it might look plain all in stone so the hoarding will add some interest and colour variation. I wondered if they ever had shields with coats of arms on the hoarding like the ships of the period had along the fighting castles, as this would look awesome!
Glad this helped with your project! I dont recall any shields or heraldry being used on top of battlements, But if you're not too concerned by historical accuracy go ahead and decorate them' hoardings! Cheers!
There are actual saw blades that are able to be used with a dremel tool made by other companies. I have one of those sets from a Harbor Freight that is about 45 minutes from where I live.
Chris K thanks! It'll do a Big show case of my castle set pretty soon then i'll be doing shorter tutorials based on subscribers requests. I'll do that when i get proper free time and nice light conditions.
No unfortunately with a full time job i cannot manage commissions, i barely find the time to do these tutorials, these are the best way I found to help out the crafting community. But hey thanks for your interest! Cheers !
@@LandvaettrsLair drat. Well, thanks for the videos! Sadly, I'm too uncoordinated to actually try and make anything, but maybe I can convince a friend to follow your instructions.
Do you have measurements for each of the pieces you made? I’ve watched this video repeatedly, pausing literally every time you measure something to cut it, but when I have tried to make a prototype I keep getting it wrong.
There was a lot of trial and error during the cutting and assembly process, I had to trim, cram and ajust quite a bit and not everything is on footage, wouldnt base your built strictly on the measures you see on screen. If your ship is overall to scale I'd say the most important is that your pieces are designed to fit together...
Oh my goodness!

On actual furniture yes, but not on miniatures builts. Would work of course, but i didn't happen to have any. Also you need a great variety of stains if you want to optain a specific wood tint. That's why i usually use my multi purpose crafting paint instead.
You know, if you would take some thin nails or even toothpicks and push them up from underneath into the crenelations, they'd be much stronger and less likely to break if anything goes wrong in play...
And there lies the beauty in crafting people show what they make others add an idea that wasn't thought of and it goes on and on. Having this worldwide crafting media is fantastic.
One major thing I forgot to mention with regard to the nails, start the hole then pull the nail out and clip the tip of it. Otherwise you can have a few issues with players or yourself if hands go in the wrong place for pressure. Sure, things break in the process, but a hospital trip to deal with an impaled hand is never a good thing...
It's made for this dremel model I guess (it's a addon), it's got the brand written on it. This is an old Dremel My dad gave me so i'm usure if they still sell a model with handle but they should.
