    Great review! You covered a lot of details. About her slingshot, I always thought of it not as a weapon, but as a way of distracting an enemy. Like, she's sneaking down a hallway when she hears guards coming, so she (almost) silently shoots a marble off in the other direction, where it lands and makes enough noise to draw them away.

    Has anyone noticed how the original Joes from 82 (83 swivel) frequently have "lazy" eyes?

    I remember finding female Joe's was so difficult back in the 80s. Most of us never even knew a Scarlett figure ever existed for a long time.

      I think they made Scarlett, Lady Jaye & Baroness accidental runners by grossly underestimating the popularity of the female characters. Only reason Cover Girl isn't so rare is because she came with a vehicle.
      Jinx is the only one I ever remember actually seeing on shelves

    The first lady of G.I. Joe! Always a big fan, and I do love the figure as well. The only thing missing is a quiver of sorts.

    I loved Scarlett. Her uniform was a stroke of fortune; like Wonder Woman it just worked. I agree they could have made an improved figure (given it a ponytail and what not) - I would just want them to keep the color and style. I liked Lady Jaye a lot too but Scarlett was my fave.

    Great review HCC. Scarlett is a great character and she deserved a better figure, I agree. She is awesome in a lot of ways. She is smaller so she can ride in the back of the Vamp. She looks very cool holding an Uzi and giving the finger to Destro (she does it politely an attribute of her southern manners). She has feelings for Snake Eyes which give her opportunities not get interrupted when speaking her mind. And she is depicted in the comics as very capable and weapon-savy. I just wish the head sculpt would have had a ponytail.

      +sam torres Yeah, they just hadn't figured out how to do long hair at the time.
      I wouldn't want to run into Scarlett in a dark alley. She's someone who has been trained from an early age to beat people up.

    Any idea how much that error file card with cover girl is worth? A nearby store has a full card available for $1000 Canadian dollars, he says there is less than 10 known in existence and only happened with Canadian cards, can you give me your opinion about this?

    I love Scarlett v1/v2 because of her uniqueness. The first (and only) main female character, her design (even without the ponytail), her background... She's sexy without being appellative and also could join frontline missions like any of the guys. She's Emma Peel in tan and her name is a joke with Vivien Leigh's classic role. And her shoes may hide a trick (she doesn't need stand ups, she can be anywhere...). Lady Jaye and Cover Girl looked more "butch" in first versions, and not even Baroness and Jinx came closer to Scarlett's appeal - and it's curious that later mrs. DeCobray became a real femme fatale and Shanna turned into a teenager.

    did it never occur to anyone that so many 1980s-era soldiers would have been trained on a weapon that was last seen in limited service during Vietnam? the M3 was a WWII weapon with limited usage since.

  • @affoster79

    She looks a lot like Sigourney Weaver on her file card.

    • @HCC788
      @HCC788  9 лет назад +2

      +affoster79 Hm. I never thought of that. Alien came out in 1979, so the creators would have been aware of Sigourney Weaver. Maybe that was the inspiration for the card art.

    I didn't get into the Joes until sometime around '85/'86, so by that time the only female figure I recall being on the pegs was Lady Jaye. LJ is hands down a superior figure, though I must say I do love the additional sculpting on Scarlett's gloves/wrists, which makes the figure slightly more dynamic.Also, as a brief aside, I wonder if performance standards were the same for male & female soldiers in Larry Hama's fictional universe. Scarlett, Lady Jaye, and (to a lesser extent) Cover Girl all seemed like exceptional Joes, so were they the only women that passed all the training requirements? I've always been fascinated by who didn't make the cut - the "almost Joes" if you will.

    • @HCC788
      @HCC788  9 лет назад +1

      +redvitaminblue That's an interesting line of inquiry. I recall a couple stories that involved training new Joes. They were all men, as I recall. I'm not sure Larry Hama gave it much thought, but it would have been interesting to explore.

      +Thor13332 The figure needed a different head! Did it still have that slingshot?

    • @Thor13332
      @Thor13332 9 лет назад

      Yes it did. It used mostly the original figure's body accept for the head and lower legs. The new lower legs and feet have.... Peg holes! It came out in 2005. I have to make a correction the holes are for skis the figure came with. They are not the standard peg hole size.

    • @HCC788
      @HCC788  9 лет назад

    As a kid I saw her at my friend's house and I thought she wasn't Gijoe. No foot hole, no pony tale but her uniform it did resemble the cartoon. However, the face looked like a guy or a man pretending to be a woman. That's why I never bought her as a kid. Later after I did realize that was scarlet. Then I dismissed everything as a mistake from Hasbro. Like I saw millions of mistakes that I expected to be fixed on the next run of toys. To my surprise Hasbro never fixed anything and to top it off they discontinued the figure. BRILLIANT!
    Look, cobra commander was not fixed until 2022 some 40 years later!!! Now it finally looks like something I recognized. Well, they did the same error with ACE. The Haslab SkyStriker was the perfect opportunity to finally fix Ace to look like the Sunbow cartoon and no! They took great care of to get the plane Sunbow accurate but the pilot???

    Great review HCC! i agree that the women of gi joe are waaaaaaay better role models for girls then the lines like barbie and brats ect ect aimed at girls. that said as a kid i did feel the need to have my females romantically connected to male characters so i bought 2 scarletts they were twins in my universe and duke and snake both had 1. what can i say? i was 10! ;)

    Wow. Another awesome review. Thank you. It would have been nice if Hasbro workers were able to design her crossbow with a bag peg. What do you think?

    • @HCC788
      @HCC788  9 лет назад +1

      +Neal G That would have been an improvement on the crossbow. I think back in 1982, Hasbro's designs just weren't that sophisticated. If they were giving her a crossbow, though, they should have somehow given her some extra bolts.

    7:48 That looks like a Derringer holdout pistol in a spring-loaded wrist holster - the kind of thing you saw in various Westerns where a poker player has a tiny pistol suddenly appear in their hand from up their sleeve when threatened. Specifically, it looks a bit like a COP .357 Magnum 4-barrelled Derringer pistol, although it's hard to tell as it's a pretty lumpy casting (obviously it wasn't the most important detail on the figure, so they didn't spend too much time getting the detail right).
    I can't think of a more useful weapon for a counterintelligence agent than a spring-loaded Derringer... although it would be a lot more useful it it were hidden up a sleeve rather than the outside of her glove in plain sight. I imagine it's for use mainly when she's in plain-clothes and wearing a jacket, and needs a concealed holdout weapon.

    • @marcharkness6101
      @marcharkness6101 2 года назад

      Maybe... But it reminds me of the Sedley 'Glove Gun' used by the OSS (Perhaps an upgraded version) The idea is that the gun goes off when you punch your opponent. It's literally sewed onto the glove. Though I think you are more likely correct here, the Sedley would have been a nice touch.

    I feel like her torso is a bit thinner. Had a difficult time replacing her o-ring the other night. And she still feels loose. Idk maybe I will try again. I hate to pull her apart because she is soooo expensive to buy nowadays. I think my mother thought we'd be perverts if she got us female figures... Probably lol. Didn't acquire them til the late 90s. One of my favs. Really good review... Oddly good. Thanks

    • @HCC788
      @HCC788  9 лет назад +1

      +MrGILBERTV Thanks! A smaller gauge o-ring might help with Scarlett. If you browse a hardware store, you may find a size that will work better. She does have a smaller cavity in her chest. I don't know how they got those old o-rings to work with her.

    Knowing Jim Shooter the way I do I'm absolutely sure shooter agreed with hasbro that women toys wouldn't sell. I honestly believe it was Larry Hama who came up with Scarlett and added female characters to G.I.Joe as a middle finger to Jim Shooter and the heads of Hasbro who thought women toys wouldn't sell and I applaud Larry Hama for that.
