    Hah, in the beginning a guy was struck from the back, and then the person who took that guy out took another person out, and that person turned to the first one and said "You fucked up!"
    I wish I could have the chance to get into this.

    Sabre and Main Gauche, an interesting combo, I've always wondered if I'd ever see anyone else try that.

      Plenty of battles/wars have been fought where there was little to distinguish the sides. Even more reason to maintain formations and keep an eye on your surroundings.

      Academy of Historical Fencing yeah that's definitely true, but as a viewer with a third person perspective it's even harder to tell.

    do you actually teach case of swords? I have seen people using double swords in a few of your videos but the people doing it don't seem too proficient in using both swords effectively. I know that I might be opening up a can of worms even mentioning it but case of swords is by far my favorite weapon combination and I am interested to know how effective you think it is.

      +IanTheRed No we don't and never have. A few of us use it on occasion for a bit of fun, one of which practices Chinese systems with two swords (Jonathan who is using a sabre and messer in this melee), and Tom and I (Nick) have a play sometimes with case of rapiers. Certainly have enough experience to comment on its effectiveness, but I wouldn't try and teach it.
      It is effective in that it can be intimidating and put down a lot of attacks. However the downsides I have seen (amongst us and all others I have seen use themO is that frequently the strikes made are not always the best, and it lacks defence in some areas. I think it is both a dangerous combination to use and have to face. Really the main reason I don't pursue it as a core interest is because it wasn't common historically, and what interests me is the swords carried commonly, such as rapier and rapier and dagger for civilian self defence, or a sabre for Georgian and onwards foot combat, or sword and buckler. Fringe weapons and combinations are something of interest that we toy with but that is all.

    Понравились действия бойца с черным клинком и металлическим баклером. Видно, что чувствует дистанцию. Но, в таком массовом бою, даже хороший фехтовальщик не застрахован от гибели.

    How do you know whose side anyone is on? It's not like skins and shirts.

      Sometimes we put a coloured ribbon around the arm, depends if we have them with us or not. Plenty of times in history where it would be hard to distinguish friend from foe, just look to many civil wars that have happened across the world, or where mercenary's were hired from similar locations by both sides. And so keeping formations becomes even more important.

    could I use regular sports fencing masks for HEMA?

    • @AcademyofHistoricalFencing
      @AcademyofHistoricalFencing  8 лет назад +6

      Yes, but you ideally need back of the head protection. They are cheap and will fit on a normal mask, see Spes historical fencing equipment.

      Thx for the fast response :) I took your advice and made myself a rattan singlestick now im trying to make a buckler, could you help direct me to some manuscripts or videos that I could use to practice on my own?

    • @AcademyofHistoricalFencing
      @AcademyofHistoricalFencing  8 лет назад +3

      If you've made a single stick then I'd recommend you work from some sabre or basket hilt treatise. The Roworth manual is one of the easiest to work with, and is available freely on the web. 'The Art of Defence on Foot, with Broadsword and sabre'.

    What are the tactics that you teach or try to use in these melee's? Their looks like a lot less coordination then I am use to in a S.C.A. rapier melee.

    Were there historical accounts of this even happening

    • @AcademyofHistoricalFencing
      @AcademyofHistoricalFencing  6 лет назад +3

      It's simply a mixed weapon melee, so yes, loads. Depends on the period, culture and context, the weapons, armour and equipment could vary a lot though. This particular melee isn't trying to replicate an exact scenario. It's more a bit of fun, and a lesson in situational awareness, and the way multiple opponents change a fight.

    Would it make any difference if they kept some sort of formation?

    • @CoffeeSnep
      @CoffeeSnep 5 лет назад

      If they had pole arms or larger shields, yes. But most of these weapons and combinations are designed for one on one fights, and require more room to use effectively. A formation wouldn't help much unless you could flank or something. But with a group size this small I can't imagine battlefield tactics coming into play.
      However, if some spearmen or guys with larger shields came into play, then yes. Absolutely.

    • @vovolk1
      @vovolk1 2 месяца назад

      Да, будет. И возможно 2 варианта. 1) Когда братья по оружию держатся вместе стоят тесно рядом, то тогда противнику сложно подойди, потому, что его могут заколоть со всех сторон. 2) Когда братья по оружию распределены равномерно по всей линии атаки с небольшим расстоянием между ними. Тогда обход с боку будет исключён. И больше вероятности самим обойти противника и напасть на него сзади.

      Possibly Asian(more specific, Chinese) martial arts or techniques derived from sword and dagger applied to double swords. But that's me, I'm not sure
