      As originally scripted, Mac and Childs were going to start a game of chess on that table at the end...I wish they had kept it in. There was a terrific Dark Horse comic book sequel where a rescue team finds them both alive and they start back home on a submarine...and again, things don't go well...

      @@justinplayfair4638 Yeah, because of this being the original ending my headcanon is that Childs is The Thing. It makes sense given that he said he saw Blair just before the lights went out, but the lights going out meant that Blair was in the generator room when Childs said he saw him. It also satisfies the theme of Mac losing a game of strategy and essentially flipping the table to ensure that both lose.
      I know there are other viable theories, but I like this one the most.

      @@llothar68 Yes, because every person of intelligence has to be intelligent in english in order to count. Especially if they are from Norway, living at a base established by Norwegians, that is populated exclusively by Norwegians. They have to know English in order to be Norwegian scientists. It's a requirement to be a scientist to know English. The ignorance really is astounding.
      It's actually very likely, because funnily enough, not that many people in non-English speaking countries learn to speak English unless they are planning to visit English-speaking countries or interact with people from English-speaking countries. That's just like expecting me, an American who has no intention of visiting Korea or talking a lot with Koreans, to learn Korean on the basis that in some emergency, the only people around would somehow only speak Korean.
      As we find out in the prequel, the majority of the scientists at the Norwegian base DID speak English... It's just by chance the only guys who survived to chase the dog in the helicopter were the only guys who DIDN'T.

So technical personal who can't read manuals for complicated technical devices that surely are not translated into english. Fucking no.
      There is no fucking way for this to happen. I found the same mistake in the 2013 movie "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" finding a norwegian teenager who couldn't speak english. Disgusting Hollywood.

    This movie is what we call Cosmic Horror , or Lovecraftian Horror. The original short story ( WHO GOES THERE) had a few things in it that were not used in the movie.
    At one point one of the characters pointed out that there was no evidence that the Thing flew the spaceship; maybe the reason it crashed was The Thing was doing to the crew of the ship what it was now doing to the men at the base. At another point just before the test, one character ( who was not used in the movie) was worried; he wonder if he was such a good imitation that he didn't know if he was really himself. Turns out, he was himself.

    • @rsrt6910
      @rsrt6910 3 года назад +46

      There was no outward indication that the ship was damaged. Either they lost control because the Thing got loose on the crew or maybe, like the Norwegians and the Americans, realized they had to keep the Thing from reaching a populated area and purposely crashed it on, what was at the time, an uninhabited Earth, even aiming for Antarctica where the Thing would remain frozen until the Earth was striped of all life when sun became a red giant.
      Then humans had to evolve and built helicopters and ruined the whole plan.

      My dad once told me a personal story involving himself and dynamite. He used to buy old piles of sawdust, left in the woods after milling (in the old days, the mills were portable, and would travel from location to location, leaving HUGE piles of sawdust behind.. years later people like him would "recycle" the sawdust). The sawdust was often very hard and solidified by the time he got to it. He would blow it apart with dynamite in order to be able to move it (dynamite was still fairly readily available in the late 70s-early 80s). One time on a huge pile, he dug down deep with a pair of post hole diggers, and set about 5 (can't remember the amount he said he used at first) sticks of dynamite in the hole, lit the fuse, and stood well back. He said he could barely hear the explosion, nothing really happened. So he tried again, using about 15 sticks. He said the entire pile lifted off the ground, and there was some sound, but it didn't disperse the pile AT ALL. The pile was like concrete, and the apparently the structure just absorbed the blast. A little pissed off at this point, he assumed he must have gotten some "bad" dynamite. So he took a stick, lit it, and threw it about 30-40 feet from him (to test it). He said the blast nearly ripped the clothes off his body, and could barely hear anything for a week. After that, he said he had much higher respect for the power of dynamite. And, probably, the hardness of old sawdust.......

      The only time the Palmer thing spoke up was when Macready was outside and he had a chance to eliminate the biggest threat. Even if Carptenter vouched for it, the idea that the infected are unaware of it just doesn’t hold water.

So, there is no longer awareness coming from the human that once was for it to know or not know. *Therefore, if you are sitting there wondering if you are a Thing, you certainly aren't."*
      What is true though is that the cast themselves didn't know who was a Thing during the filming process until it was their turn to die/transform, which added to the paranoia of it all, since they genuinely didn't know who's turn it was.

    1) Prove they are human
    2) That they can be trusted and support the other person to death (which is vital to prove that they aren't paranoid)
    3) To show that they did indeed "win" by ending the threat. (Can't copy the dead, remember)

Not to mention, the ambiguity of certain assimilations such as the shadow that the dog attacks and if Childs or MacReady are a Thing are hallmarks of why this movie is still so good. The movie began and the "audience" was grumbling about how similar our circumstance was compared to the film. Anxieties and tensions were building while the movie progressed. The scene where the doc has his arms bitten off caused all hell to break loose. I watched as grown men screamed and yelled for their mommies while they ran to their bunks and hid under blankets. Funniest thing I have ever seen! Thanks for the video.

    Although it is the best of the three, the other two are good movies.

    This movie was something of a holy grail back then to say you had seen it, but not even the nightmarish descriptions you heard in the playground truly prepared you for how wild this is. And it grows in stature as you age, as an amazing piece of special effects horror and a textbook example of sheer paranoia. One of Carpenter's best.

      Yeah but Carpenter said that was not intentional. There is no real answer. He made it specifically where no actual clues or answer or anything is even thought up. It is completely open to interpretation. He didn't plan who was infected or if either of them were infected or both were infected. So nothing that can be seen in the film, hints towards anything it's just coincidence

    • @Turrican60
      @Turrican60 3 года назад

      The "no breath" theory has been suggested a thousand times before, but it simply doesn't hold water, and never will. Take a look at the Bennings-Thing as it lets out that loud wailing sound just moments before it gets fried by MacReady's flare.............you can see its breath *VERY* clearly, thus disproving your point.
      There's also no proof that the bottle MacReady handed to Childs was a molotov cocktail. Sure, it's a popular theory that's been around for years, but it's not the fact you present it as. Put it this way:
      If Childs really *WERE* The Thing (an exact copy of a human being in every detail as the film makes abundantly clear), then the creature would obviously realise in an instant that it was drinking kerosene rather than scotch, and that's because it would have 'human' tastebuds.
      On the contrary, Childs takes a big gulp, so there logically *HAS* to be another, far better explanation for MacReady's smirk. For example, maybe he thought Childs was pretty stupid for taking the risk of being infected? Or maybe he smiled because it didn't really matter anymore as he knew he was as good as dead anyway?
      Or maybe he strongly suspected Childs of being The Thing, but smiled because he saw the ironic humour in sharing a final drink with his deadly, sworn enemy? Pick your own.

    This Carpenter classic is a masterful exercise in paranoia and practical effects!
    Originally a 1938 pulp novella written by John W. Campbell called "Who Goes There?", the story was first adapted to film as a 1951 Howard Hawks production called "The Thing From Another World". A '50's-era sci-fi classic in its own right, the original was taken to a whole new level by John Carpenter abetted by the incredible practical effects wizardry of Rob Bottin. A prequel was made in 2011 chronicling what happened at the Norwegian base but wasn't nearly as good.
    Led by a world-weary Kurt Russell, Carpenter assembled a cast of terrific veteran character actors including Keith David, Richard Dysart, Wilford Brimley, David Clennon, Charles Hallahan, Donald Moffat and Richard Masur who believably inhabit their roles and ratchet up the tension by degrees. Carpenter would direct Russell in five films including "Elvis", "The Thing", "Big Trouble in Little China", "Escape From New York" and "Escape From LA". He would direct Keith David again in "They Live!"
    Carpenter is a one-man band who writes, directs, edits and scores all his films. His body of work includes a number of pulpy classics and B-movie greats like "Assault on Precinct 13", "Halloween", "Someone's Watching Me!", "The Fog", "Escape From New York", "The Thing", "Christine", "Starman", "They Live!", "Memoirs of an Invisible Man", "Body Bags", "In the Mouth of Madness", "Vampires" and "The Ward". His first film, "Dark Star", was a sci-fi horror-comedy that partially inspired "Alien"! He also wrote the screenplay for "The Eyes of Laura Mars". His scores are instantly recognizable with their throbbing notes and he expertly uses silence and stillness to generate unbearable tension.
    My favorite non-horror moment in "The Thing" is Donald Moffat's slow-burning explosive outburst while tied to the couch. "I know you gentlemen have been through a lot but, when you find the time, I'd rather not spend the rest of this winter TIED TO THIS F**KING COUCH!" It gets me every time.
    The ambiguous ending leaves you with four possible outcomes and they're all bleak. Lol.

    The Thing was always a favourite of mine and is a brilliant example of paranoia horror. The ending is sooo fitting for the paranoia of the movie as it leaves you wondering if either of them, or even both of them are taken over and might bring about the end to our world. Letting a reader or watcher write their own ending is so underused at times but works brilliantly here.
