I was there. That was my HS. But at that time, I didn’t know what the hell Oingo Boingo was. I just remember a band playing with a big banner displayed. LITTLE DID I KNOW what a great composer Danny Elfman would become!
I dont think people were as paranoid back then. I recall reading that this album was supposed to be kinda sarcastic anyway, I don't think Danny Elfman really loved to _____... little girls
I went to Westlake High, and Danny Elfman asked out my sister. She turned him down and forgot about the guy in the band (she called) 'Bongo Bongo' because she was a Led Zeppelin fan. Recently showed her the progression of 'Bongo Bongo' from Gray Matter to Weird Science up through to the Pumpkin King and movie soundtracks for Tim Burton and others. Her: Huge eyes and stank face. Then: You mean that crazy red head guy did all that? Me: Yep!
Ha! That's a fantastic story! My uncle was in drama class with Danny in junior high, and he basically has the same reaction: that crazy red head guy did all that? If Danny ever writes a biography, that would actually be a fantastic name for it, haha
He could kind of get away with it because he was still young and cute at the time. Couldn’t do it now at 69, although hearing the way he sang the perverted part of “Nothing to Fear” at Coachella I don’t think he can even muster that level of creepiness anymore, after decades of being a parent and all.
@@notidentified9667 Yeah plus I’m having a hard time getting back in college because of COVID and all so I have a lot of time on my hands. And yes I’m going to see him on my birthday for the second year in a row.
My band, "The Bings" (Babymoon Records) played Westlake High in May 1981. Got a great stereo recording of one set. Rowdy crowd. Like us, they were into KROQ. The Bings and Oingo Boingo often played the same places in the Conejo & San Fernando Valleys, usually within a couple weeks of each other. Must've had the same agent. In November 1980, we caught Oingo Boingo at Ford Theater in Hollywood with Su Tissue & Suburban Lawns, when Boingo signed their A&M record deal.
Do you have this whole gig? can i gather from the between song banter that dead kennedys played before them? At a highschool!? my god.. to see video footage of this? can you imagine.. thanks for all your hard work. you've continually reminded me of why i loved this band at such a young age and for most of my life.
fezenstein I dont think there’s any video unfortunately, but I have most the gig and will get round to uploading one day. I think this was just Oingo Boingo this gig (when they were still quite underground!) and Danny was probably referencing something Dead Kennedys once said.

Super rad, the fact that this performance predates Only a Lad is super cool!
Yeah and this is a really, really good live version too. Sounds very close to the album.

Hahahaha the fact they did this song at a HS is fucking golden.
I don't know what it is but the way that Danny says "I love little girls" in the beginning itches my brain in just the right way.

The guitars in this version..... holy......
I love the part where the guitar "sings" the vocal melody for the chorus @2:50 onward.
Wow, I remember that day like it was yesterday when that was taped live at our school. Crazy it brought back so many memories.
dude im in LOVE with this performance its so good
I was there. Freshman at Cal Lu....Danny stopped it 2 times, and said if you spit on me again I will kick you in the face...it was a riot literally.
Well remembered! That was captured on the recording of Controller from the same show on this channel

At one point, at punk concerts in the 70s, spitting at the band was apparently the way to applaud them.

Something tells me early new wave was basically just punk.
Danny wanted to make music with the energy of punk music but more musically and musically sophisticated.
New wave is indeed another form of punk rock.
Omg a relatively new song ! I feel so old and I was a wee lad when this song dropped 😂
