Instant reload with this instrumental. Never left the bag for 4 years of pirate radio. Vinyl was grey with scratches
Eskibeat was Wiley’s collective name for his beats that came after his breakthrough beat Eskimo, which changed the game. This was labelled before the label Grime came about and took hold. Eskimo is one of the earliest examples of the beats that would become part of the classic Grime sound. And Wiley went on to make a lot of beats that were similar. So you could say Eskibeat is a very specific style of Grime sound, but Grime encompasses a wider range (but still is dark, often unsettling or hard on the ears, a kind of electro 16-bit punk vibe, and just, well, Grimey!) There were other beats made around the same time that were arguably as influential within the scene, but with Wiley being an MC as well, that marriage of beats and bars really helped to crystallise Grime.
Alongside this, you have to give Dizzee his flowers for being the other major artist to really solidify grime at inception. Even Wiley has done this in numerous interviews, despite their differences. Dizzee was making Grime beats from early, from his mid-teenage years, and with a cadence and style of MCing that was - especially at the time - utterly unique and arresting; it demanded attention (and propelled him to quick success). Boy In Da Corner is a masterclass in Grime - particularly as an album - it really set the blueprint for the scene like nothing else; we’d never heard anything like it. There’s a reason everyone refers to Wiley and Dizzee as the main originators of the scene. Absolute legends.
There’s some interesting docs on Dizzee/BIDC and also on Wiley & Eskibeat on RUclips still which have a lot of great background. I’ll try and find them and put the links below.
This is a really good background on Dizzee, the only thing I think they got wrong is making out that Dizzee came along after the birth of Grime, as opposed to being part of its inception. I Luv You and other tunes from BIDC were originally written when Dizzee was still in college, on the Music Department computers. Several people have testified to the beat I Luv You being in circulation from 2001, hearing different MCs rap on it etc before Dizzee recorded it properly for the BiTC album.

And this short interview clip is Wiley basically giving Dizzee his flowers and acknowledging the importance of Dizzee in the creation of the sound and the direction of the scene. Really interesting to hear about and kudos to Wiley for articulating this.

Dizzee ain’t on this tune bro, i think it’s Brazen, Scratchy, Wiley, Breeze, Trim. There’s a clip in the roll deep documentary of these man making this tune in the studio 🥶
reeeeeloadddd, insane energy when Wiley come on. If rappers in the US catch wind of grime beats, it's over
This is one of them old bangers, Roll Deep also spit over Eskimo which is a grime anthem and arguably the first grime beat made by Wiley (eskibeat in this case). Might be worth checking out I think it's just Roll Deep - Eskimo Vocal Version
Dizzee is on this track near the end
The order is Scratchy, Wiley, Breeze then Trim
1:42 - this isn't Dizzie he isnt on this track. In order its Riko (just the intro), Brazen, Scratchy, Wiley, Breeze then Trim last
The way Trim came in was crazy 💥💥💥
Your dad’s the milk man. 😂😂😂 I can’t never see Tom and not think that.
Classic instrumental, I'd like to hear you mc on it actually.
I'm not sure who the first person is, but it's definitely not dizzee, might be breeze, but dizzee rascals voice is so recognisable, the second person is Scratchy then Wiley
Brazen, Breeze's younger brother
It's Eskibeat but it's Grimey as fuck so it's Grime. They're both interchangeable in some ways.
He said too tight like a J** out, this guy is consistent 😂
