What is Metabolism?

- Normally when we think of metabolism, we think of weight loss fads like the Keto diet, the Paleo diet or intermittent fasting. Metabolism, however, is way more interesting than weight loss trends. It is the process used by your body to transform Cap'n Crunch into brain cells, and some scientists believe it his has huge implication for the origin of life!
Teacher: Okay describe yourself
Me: I am a whirlpool.
I identify as a frog thank you!

YES I KNOW, ME AND MY FRIEND HAVE A EXAM COMING IN 3 DAYS AND WE DONT KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS
@@mixiegacha4792 did ya pass?
For real
This is literally one of the best researched and animated channels on youtube, this guys surely deserves more visualizations.
I mean, whoever has a clue of how the animation process works knows that only just a few seconds of video take hours to draw
No this is ruclips.net/user/Kurzgesagt
Well they do have big bucks behind them. Still true tho
I have an AP Bio test on Monday and this is so helpful. Thank you so much for producing such interesting and high quality content! I’m going back and rewatching all your videos.
How'd you do in the test?
I'm looking forward to that "Metabolism-First Hypothesis" video
Me too! Can't wait
It’s weird seeing a yearbook picture as a profile picture

The attention-to-detail of the specific molecules, like ATP/ADP, and functional groups, all combining in the various reactions is impressive.
The metabolism is the powerhouse of the cell!
Wait, did I get that right?
Master Therion oh hey nice to see you again

No, thats the Mitochondria, just remember that this is our central dogma, and we cant go back on this... i think.
@@ABW941 whossshhh
@@granma_dota I think you also got woshed pretty hard, cause I know that he made a joke about the mitochondria meme, but i made a joke about how we have to stay with the mitochondria meme, cause we cant go back on this being our central dogma, which is the rule that you can only go from rna/dna to protein and not back, therefore we cant go back on this.
Truly a great video, deserves several orders of magnitudes more views. Like your future metabolism-first video w/ 40 billion views 😉
I'm sooooo looking forward to that video! Also beautiful animations. This is my favorite up and coming channel right now.
I absolutely love this channel. You clearly put a ton of work into finding the best way to explain the subject: What to include and in what order; the analogies and visualisations.
I didn't feel that this video had quite the usual clarity in what it was communicating but perhaps that is just because the metabolism is a messy thing to try to explain.
This video was amazing!
I had been bingeing on videos explaining a zoomed in perspective of the citric acid cycle, and this video came at the perfect time to give a whole new perspective. I look forward to your future videos
This is a fantastic video. It's one of those special videos that makes you go aha! and really drives home the concepts to ephasize how cool it really is. Thanks for making this, I love your content!
I'd really love to see animations and explanations of as much metabolic cycles as you can ( ones like 4:25 ) , in a side channel , with the final episode incorporating all animations into one , the metabolic pathway all animated , imagine how beautiful it would look
I think this is the utterly best sciencies RUclips channel. It's extremely well executed, the narration is perfect, the scripts are beautifully written, and the communication is pristine - and stated clearly! I just love to watch the videos, even if they are about subjects I already know! Cheers, my friend, by your excellent work!
Perfect video to watch while eating.
Woah Jon, another great video. If this is going to be a series on plausible pathways to abiogenesis then this is what I’ve been waiting for, for a long time 😃
Bravo dude... You animate this all by yourself which is awesome... I don't mind you taking long time to produce such quality material as long as you keep on doing it...
I just found this channel, and want to say Thank You. I will be sharing this with every young person I know.
This channel is so wonderful. You make such well informed videos that make hard topics easy to “digest” thank you
I really love your Structural chemicals animations!
You're just amazing Jon Perry. I was having trouble understanding this topic but you made it clear for
me.
Awesome as always, you guys are amazing I have learned so much from your channel. Keep the awesome videos coming, sharing this as usual.
Great video. I personally lost 66 lbs in 8 months with a high fat - low carb diet and metabolism boosting tips. Keeping metabolism high is crucial for weight loss:
- Drink more water
- Eat more protein
- Resistance training
- HIIT cardio
- Get enough sleep
Losing weight and keeping it off is incredibly easy if you know what you’re doing 🙂
All I can say is that this channel deserve millions of subs.
So interesting! I'm a simple guy, but curious; and I love to understand things a bit better. Thanks for your explanation and animation. Really good job!
Thank you for this wonderful video! I just woke up to this video in my subscription box.

This is excellent. I cannot imagine anyway in which I could have improved on it. Thank you!

great video, more information than most inner-city pubic schools would cover in a year. the government should have nothing to do with those institutions.

Hi John, do you teach course on how to make animations. I like your animations and would like to learn how you do it. If you could point me to other resources, that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
THAT WAS REALLY COOL!
Nice video!
Me during this entire video: my body do that? Wow 😯
Omg I missed you guys so much
Awesome
Came here cuz of Bio. You are better at explaining than my teacher
someone : What are you?
me : i am a whirlpool.
Aewsome!
0:52 you mentioned that understanding chemics gets you a better underatanding of ourselves, life, and cosmos. Well i agree, i had the same idea about just focusing on the reproduction system and brain. Metabolism indeed too
Yes yes finally a vid from Stated Clearly
although it is of course only a metaphor, I would much rather prefer calling organisms something like a self-structuring whirlpool. The importance of physical processes (besides chemical reactions) that enable life are just as important as the chemical processes.
The nanoscale is in this ideal niche where discrete & continues mix very nicely together. E.g. one can have discrete building blocks like nucleotides, amino acids or lipids and assemble them into structures that are rather continue like DNA/RNA, proteins & membranes as in, you can't describe the structure by only knowing how its building blocks work.
Yet these macroscale processes allow for discrete effects e.g. the expression of mRNA, a protein tagging other proteins with a phosphorous group or methylation of the DNA. These processes have direct effects on the functioning of an organism, without finding their foundation in chemical reactions. I could talk far more about non-chemical processes that are essential but I'm sure you get my point.
As such, limiting the perspective of what it means to be alive in a scientific sense to only the metabolism is, in my opinion, a too narrow perspective on the matter. It is, however of course, a piece of the puzzle. I just hope people will realize there is more to it than (just) chemistry.
Intelligent design 😎
Yay a new video
