To be honest, in the 90s I would have never imagined that I would end up having access to a comparison and analysis of VR headsets by an ophthalmologist. And I already knew all of this, that's why I bought the Q3 a few months ago. But it's so enjoyable to listen to the little details.
Hey everyone I just got my Quest 3s two days ago and here’s my two cents. I am someone who is pretty new to VR. I have never owned a headset myself and I’ve only ever used someone else’s a handful of times several years ago. I think the Quest 3s was worth every penny. The image quality in game is great and you definitely become fully immersed in the games. The blur he speaks about is definitely real but in my opinion, it’s nothing that takes me out of the experience. It is really only noticeable in my far peripheral vision. The pass through is awesome and I have messed around with that more than games right now. The quality of pass through is good, the image is grainy especially in poor lighting. But in a well lit room it was pretty good, I was even able to read stuff on my phone. The quality of media like RUclips or prime video in pass through was surprisingly good. I watching the full dungeons and dragons movie and had no issues. Is the quality better than my 4k tv?? Heck no. But I can’t take my tv in every room with me and resize the screen however I want. Is it better than watching something on my tablet or phone? Heck yes! The headset is awesome and as someone who is new to VR I believe the price point of the Quest 3S is an amazing deal. Oh and the Arkham Shadow game that is included is Fu***** AMAZING!! If y’all have any questions feel free to ask, I’ll do my best to answer anything😁
Thank you for your review! I’ve never had VR glasses before as well and was a bit afraid of buying one because I didn’t know if watching movies and stuff would also work well.
Is there any way to reduce the blurriness in the peripherals of the lenses? In Arkham Shadow, any time a text box appears in the top left or right corners of the lenses, I can _BARELY_ read it. I don't wear glasses or contacts, so the prescription add-on lenses would be useless to me.
@@elwoodjacobs4353 I know exactly what you’re talking about. I’m also playing through the game right now. The most important thing I’ve noticed about these lenses is making sure you are in that sweet spot, that means making sure the lenses are in the correct position and your headset strap is properly adjusted so you are getting the clearest image possible. Other than that there is not a whole lot you can do to change it. It is one of the downsides of the lenses and the main reason this headset cost $200 less than the premium.
I just bought a 3s and yeah…. That sweet spot is freaking tiny. You have to move your head and look to find the sweet spot, it’s not super noticeable when gaming or watching something but as soon as you go to read…. Haha, good luck. Things I wish I knew before I bought, but oh well.

The best way to deal with blurryness is play away from sunlight. (I wear glasses with my vr so it might be different. Also I am typing with the vr on]
I just got my meta quest 3 as a Christmas present and as soon as I put it on it was blurry, and when I lifted it up, it was better, but it kept sliding down

Why did people expect the quest 3s to have the cream of the crop pancake lences? There is no way that Meta would ever make their cheaper headset compete with their more expensive standard for standalone vr. With that said tho, the biggest blunder Meta made with the 3s was to not include a proper IPD system. That could actually solve a lot of the blurriness.

Hey doc, just got the 3s and noticed it’s much clearer with my prescription glasses on than with my contacts on. Found this to be strange any thoughts?
It lowers the barrier to entry for people on the fence to take there first steps into vr. Consider the meta quest 3s and quest 2 as the nintendo switch lite or the 2ds members of the meta ecosystem.
To make it fully compatible with all quest 3 games and apps? Silly statament if you think about it twice. Look at pastorsleeps comment, it`s a more opened approach on metas side for people unsure about VR.
@pixGu no lmao why would u make a product with the same power as ur newest product but with the bad display of ur old product it makes no sense just get the good one or stick with the old one🤔
@@pastorsleepthe "bad one" is the same as quest II's display. They made it like that to be fully compatible with Q3 games and to lower the entry point. You clearly have no idea about software development and how sales work... Different hardware = harder to make it compatible.

Don’t know what’s more interesting: how we blink 60% less when looking at screens… or that someone’s actually counting how many times people blink when looking at different things.
I have the quest 3. Frankly using quest game optimizer and either contacts or for convinience I use Zenni prescription that literally clip onto the quest which helps a lot. That being said I can’t imagine plastic right in front of the screen doesn’t help. I think I had to put things into context. When I stopped treating the quest like a game console and more like an arcade machine well it’s the damn coolest arcade machine out there. Also, if I imagine the quest as having the power of like a ps4 with how it has to render at 72 hz minimum, ideally 90 or 120fps it makes sense a ps4 looks like trash. I mean it’s a switch on steroids in a headset that has to double render at a very high fps. Consoles and pc render one image. So double the rendering cost. And almost none of my series x games reach 120fps. I don’t think I’ll ever be a big vr guy it also hurts my neck I have neck pain. But for a disabled person it does provide a way to get some physical exercise and movement. Better yet it’s a lot more fun than a Wii. My god is it a pain to do tho. I hate being disabled makes life so much harder.
The user-facing lenses in the Quest headsets (all models) are plastic, and though they're obviously optical-grade, they're not as scratch-resistant as glass lenses. So the advice to be careful about what type of cloth you use to clean them is good. Further inside the headset the other lenses in the system are glass. Meta chose to use plastic for the user-facing lenses both for safety (less likely to shed little bits into the user's eyes than glass, when scratched), as well as weight and cost savings.
Q3S vs Q3 Pros of the Q3S compared to the Q3: - **16% better binocular overlap** this creates 2 circular "nose shadows" on Q3 screen which ~16% more noticeable than in Q3S because the Q3 lenses have 16% less surface area. - **40% or 20% cheaper (depending on Q3S version)** - 20 more minutes (+14%) of battery life (though battery life isn’t very important since you can just use a power bank in your pocket with the cable inside your shirt, or use swappable batteries and basically have infinite battery) - Ability to play in the dark (it has 2 IR illuminators) - For the same game/situation the Quest 3S actually has the *potential* for 30% higher fps/fidelity than Quest 3 (because it has the same internal specs but lower resolution). Cons of the Q3S compared to the Q3: - **23% lower resolution (however they have both the same default eye buffer resolution, which can be further increased using Quest Games Optimiser)** - **Uses Fresnel lenses instead of pancake lenses** (see note 2 below) - **Less memory space compared to the 512GB version of the Q3** - 20% bulkier - Less flexible IPD distance settings (Q3S has 3 settings, 58 63 and 68mm and Q3 has a slider 53 to 75mm) Note 1: Q3 and Q3S have the same GPU, CPU, default eye buffer resolution, VRAM, RAM, passthrough quality and color, fps range (72fps-120fps), weight, etc. Note 2: For me, the difference in lenses wasn’t significant compared to the difference in resolution (I’d say about 70% of the difference in image quality between headsets comes from resolution). But reading comments on Reddit, it’s clear that some people notice a big difference
@@3reefolD I'd say its a very hard choice because they both offer extreme value for their respective prices (you will love any of them). I'd also say Q3 is slightly better but since the difference in binocular overlap bugs me a bit and given that Q3S is way cheaper I went for the Q3S
Dr Eye Guy always does a great job explaining all the eye and visual problems of the Quests. I still want to know what happened to the Inseye Lumi eye tracking lens that was talked about a year ago. Seemed to have just dusappeared
The first VR i ever tried was the free Oculus one that Samsung gave me years ago when I bought my phone. I thought that was really cool and not blurry. The 3S has to be better than that was.
I have both headsets now, I bought the 3s to play with family members, and I would say this video is totally accurate. Honestly, I wouldn't be into VR if the 3s was as good as it gets. The pancake lenses are 💯 and they really should have found a way to get them in there, even if it cost a little bit more. They're a game changer and make vr way more enjoyable.
What about motion sickness? I'm having trouble getting this thing to rest on my head comfortably, especially trying to figure out the sweet spot especially since it all seems the three adjustments for the lenses.. like I'm in between them or something. The up down left right and the distance and the tilt and it sliding in my face like you said pulling my eyelids out squeezing my head. I used it for a while yesterday but I did end up motion sick and I've seen suggestions about that but also it's not as clear as I would like, specifically text and the edges and the rays. I'm seriously considering updating too the 3 instead of 3s because the larger sweet spot and more pixels shines like my solution but I'm not sure if I'm even wearing the thing correctly in terms of lining my eyes up with the sweet spot and I think this has to have contributed to the motion sick feeling I was getting. (Yes I also read about vrlegs, teleporting, not using smooth motion. I didn't even know where those settings are tbh I haven't done much other than explore the metaverse stuff you start with. I just spent the last hour playing with the head strap trying to get it comfortable and positioned correctly with the least amount of blue and it gets pretty in focus but doesn't seem exactly right and the edges stretch a lil and it slips out of the sweet spot on my face and just everything you mentioned lol it's frustrating I've had this for a day
Nausea is more affected by frame rate than visual clarity. Some games will use a low refresh like 72hz to make the visuals look better which might contribute. But even with high frame rate many people would still have a period of adaptation because the brain has to get used to that type of stimuli via (gradual) exposure
@@quidnunc01100% correct. This is also why many people have problems with 3D movies. Expectingly 3D movies should be more natural/true to life and therefore more comfortable to watch which they are but the fact that you see something that looks so close to reality in only 24FPS messes with your brain and can give you great discomfort and nausea/headaches. That's why some movie directors are using higher frame rates like James Cameron for Titanic and the Avatar movies (but it's still only 48fps with some scenes in 24fps), Peter Jackson with The Hobbit movies and Ang Lee for Gemini man and Billy Lynn which were even done in 120fps which is so much more comfortable to watch and also way more realistic/immersive. And there are many more movies like Kung Fu Panda 4, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, The Wild Robot and Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
@@John-5737 For me it depends on the game and motion within it. I can play walkabout mini golf or eleven ping pong all day, but Red Matter gives me a massive headache. Too much artificial movement in VR seems to give me motion sickness.
@@Theartist-56788 appreciate the advise (everyone I didn't see the replies til now) I ended up trading it for the quest 3 and saw improvements but still gets to me a bit. I don't think it's as bad as before but tbh i haven't been played much lately. Still hoping I get my "vr legs" eventually. Still love the thing
@DrEyeGuy the pass-through is just too grainy so MR is just terrible. I guess for VR games it's ok but I have no interest in that. My main complaint was the marketing of usages that are simply not practical with the performance of pass through.
Great video presentation. I have. There is a slight correction in my left eye, hence the need for prescription glasses. Nice one on the vr glass will.check them out. Hopefully, it's not too expensive or a.gimic.
Quest 2 was way better hands down for these adjustments. I needed no special lenses to put in or had to ware my computer glasses. The latter is an instant deal breaker. I think I might have to look into getting Prescription lenses for VR.
The Quest 3s feels lighter and more comfortable. You still have to get the elite strap with built in battery because the strap it comes with is horrible
In my country it's 300 so the 325 is a deal breaker if you want more / better lenses get 3 but the 3s has the same proccesser as the 500 dollar one so in my opinion get 175 it's was really good
Some people just get motion sick at first but if you keep playing you'll get used to it. 12 and under shouldn't use a headset as it can mess with eye development but otherwise you're fine.
Good video, my eyesight is better now I blink, look away and use drops sometimes thanks. As an aside, when you put the big fresnel sheet to your mouth I thought you might want to get that tooth straightened back in place. I had a few similar teeth and used clear aligners which was well worth it before they began to overlap too much.
@ Sorry don’t mean to make you self conscious, just the lower jaw middle tooth which is back quite a lot. Guess it’s probably not continuing to move but mine were (teeth can move as we age).
The biggest reason the Quests are blurry it´s because they can´t render high resolution textures: blurryness disapears when looking closely: i.e.: Alyx´s globes.
@ilcarlino752 Then why the same game running from a capable PC looks much less blurry? i.e. Vader Immortal, looks wonderful on a Rift S, which have much less resolution than the Quests.
@@HeyShotgun I refreshed and my reply was gone so don't blame me if I look stupid for writing the same thing twice, but I recommend using the BoboVR E3 Pro Battery Strap, It should help so you don't have to adjust your headset to fix blur :)
The lenses are really clear like 100% for a 200 buck difference the only thing different is the lenses the 3s has better battery same processes so I'm stick with 3s

having the same power but not the same display what even is the point of this product i wouldve preferred the other way around
@@pastorsleepas someone who’s never owned a vr i’d rather not pay more than what i paid for my playstation 5…. this is a good product for people like myself who want to get into vr but don’t wanna splash money on something i don’t know if i’ll even like…
Hi Eye 👁 👀 Guy nice video 📹 and workmanship love the VR . Viewer nice video 📹 and workmanship 😮
Don’t know what’s more interesting: how we blink 60% less when looking at screens… or that someone’s actually counting how many times people blink when looking at different things.
lol
So it was me.. and people with extreme astigmatism we are last gen hardware.. :( we can only overclock it a bit.. with msi prescription glasses
Amazing content man ! i was looking everywhere for this content. Breakdown of fresnel lens impact.
Q3S vs Q3
Pros of the Q3S compared to the Q3:
- **16% better binocular overlap** this creates 2 circular "nose shadows" on Q3 screen which ~16% more noticeable than in Q3S because the Q3 lenses have 16% less surface area.
- **40% or 20% cheaper (depending on Q3S version)**
- 20 more minutes (+14%) of battery life (though battery life isn’t very important since you can just use a power bank in your pocket with the cable inside your shirt, or use swappable batteries and basically have infinite battery)
- Ability to play in the dark (it has 2 IR illuminators)
- For the same game/situation the Quest 3S actually has the *potential* for 30% higher fps/fidelity than Quest 3 (because it has the same internal specs but lower resolution).
Cons of the Q3S compared to the Q3:
- **23% lower resolution (however they have both the same default eye buffer resolution, which can be further increased using Quest Games Optimiser)**
- **Uses Fresnel lenses instead of pancake lenses** (see note 2 below)
- **Less memory space compared to the 512GB version of the Q3**
- 20% bulkier
- Less flexible IPD distance settings (Q3S has 3 settings, 58 63 and 68mm and Q3 has a slider 53 to 75mm)
Note 1: Q3 and Q3S have the same GPU, CPU, default eye buffer resolution, VRAM, RAM, passthrough quality and color, fps range (72fps-120fps), weight, etc.
Note 2: For me, the difference in lenses wasn’t significant compared to the difference in resolution (I’d say about 70% of the difference in image quality between headsets comes from resolution). But reading comments on Reddit, it’s clear that some people notice a big difference
Quest 3 lens is much better overall.
Awesome comment! Would you be ok if I pinned this comment for a while?
@@DrEyeGuy sure! no problem at all :) (sorry just saw the message now!)
...Would you all say the Quest 3 is better for your eyes than the Quest 3s? Or maybe vice versa?
@@3reefolD I'd say its a very hard choice because they both offer extreme value for their respective prices (you will love any of them). I'd also say Q3 is slightly better but since the difference in binocular overlap bugs me a bit and given that Q3S is way cheaper I went for the Q3S
Dr Eye Guy always does a great job explaining all the eye and visual problems of the Quests. I still want to know what happened to the Inseye Lumi eye tracking lens that was talked about a year ago. Seemed to have just dusappeared
OK, quest 3 it is for me then..
What do you think of Dr. Hearts sight recovery ultrasonic thearapy device can it really improve vision
The first VR i ever tried was the free Oculus one that Samsung gave me years ago when I bought my phone. I thought that was really cool and not blurry. The 3S has to be better than that was.
What are the 3 PD settings 3s gives you?
Does the quest 3s work with pro controllers?
I can't really read the whole thing but try moving the headset strap up and down really helped me
@@Theartist-56788 appreciate the advise (everyone I didn't see the replies til now) I ended up trading it for the quest 3 and saw improvements but still gets to me a bit. I can play comfort games all day (well my eyes get strained eventually too) I love beat saber and I expect you to die games but like the other use mentioned games with artificial motion seem to get to me. I don't think it's as bad as before but tbh i haven't been played much lately. Still hoping I get my "vr legs" eventually. Still love the thing
For me the Quest 3 is already too blurry to be usable. Still waiting for a decent device to be released.
Too blurry to even use it? And that's even after wearing your glasses if you wear them?
@DrEyeGuy the pass-through is just too grainy so MR is just terrible. I guess for VR games it's ok but I have no interest in that. My main complaint was the marketing of usages that are simply not practical with the performance of pass through.
Great video presentation. I have. There is a slight correction in my left eye, hence the need for prescription glasses. Nice one on the vr glass will.check them out. Hopefully, it's not too expensive or a.gimic.
Will I be able to play vr games with a link cable on decent settings? I have a rx6800m 12gb card in the laptop
Yup
Subscribed to see those lenses! Please rush on this content :)
Quest 2 was way better hands down for these adjustments. I needed no special lenses to put in or had to ware my computer glasses. The latter is an instant deal breaker. I think I might have to look into getting Prescription lenses for VR.
Debating to spend 175 for the quest 3s or 500 for better lenses 😅
The Quest 3s feels lighter and more comfortable. You still have to get the elite strap with built in battery because the strap it comes with is horrible
In my country it's 300 so the 325 is a deal breaker if you want more / better lenses get 3 but the 3s has the same proccesser as the 500 dollar one so in my opinion get 175 it's was really good
My original quest has better lense adjustment. I cant see s**t through my quest 3s.
Could I ask if these devices are bad for your eyes!? … after 30 minutes I get nausea, they couldn’t be good for eyesight???
Some people just get motion sick at first but if you keep playing you'll get used to it. 12 and under shouldn't use a headset as it can mess with eye development but otherwise you're fine.
Well I mean it’s like having screens right on your eyes so no they aren’t good lol
What crooked tooth? 😉
@ Sorry don’t mean to make you self conscious, just the lower jaw middle tooth which is back quite a lot. Guess it’s probably not continuing to move but mine were (teeth can move as we age).
@steveco1800 I'm just kidding. 🙂 I know my tooth is crooked.
To bad Meta didn’t give us an option to upgrade the lens
They did.. it’s called the Quest 3 … LOL
do you think its clear enough to watch movies?
Yes
no
hell yeah
It absolutely is.
Because you bought the 3S and not the 3.
That's the reason!
I just bought one and pixelated areas
The biggest reason the Quests are blurry it´s because they can´t render high resolution textures: blurryness disapears when looking closely: i.e.: Alyx´s globes.
Not true
@ilcarlino752 why
@@conejeitor they are blurry because they have a sweet spot that is hard to find, but it stops being blurry once you find it
@ilcarlino752 Then why the same game running from a capable PC looks much less blurry? i.e. Vader Immortal, looks wonderful on a Rift S, which have much less resolution than the Quests.
@conejeitor maybe because the quest 3 has a total of 400 more pixel, come on now
The cure is to get a q3 and get the optimiser! Done.
Y'know having "worse" graphics but having same processor and everthing makes it more stable than the quest 3 ...
You can get quest optimiser for 10 dollar and make it even more better looking with their HD and HD + settings
Still just plain blurry 😅 got so excited just knew it was too good to be true 😂 just few minutes in made me dizzy guess VR still not for me
It's called motion sickness it happens to first time users js play more and it will go away
Come on, why use pixels per inch if screen sizes and lens geometry is different, let's use pixels per degree
How do you get closer to the lenses?
I feel the quest 2 very good, not all blurry... I dont know if its me, but in-game you stop looking graphics, for fun instead
Maybe i got the right sweetpot i dunno
Blurry for me 😞 @@gastonpares7266
You want the short answer? It has the same ass lenses as the quest 2.
The hero I didn't know I needed - didn't even need to go on the quest 😂
still . i wanted a quest 3s to play batman .
@@HeyShotgun I refreshed and my reply was gone so don't blame me if I look stupid for writing the same thing twice, but I recommend using the BoboVR E3 Pro Battery Strap, It should help so you don't have to adjust your headset to fix blur :)
@ hmm i have kiwi pro strap . so .
@ i just got the quest 3s im so excited for batman lol
Buy a Meta Quest 3 is what I’m doing.
people buy the quest 3s because of the price, if price wasnt the thing then way more people would buy the quest 3
Man ion care if all looks good
💯 👍
3 bad battery
Sooooooo don’t buy it basically
Not to be the guy who says “first, second!, third”
BUT
I wanna clarify
Am I… second?
Looks like you are. 🙂
I mean it has better battery than the 3 and the same like GPU and stuff so the lenses are the only difference
3 S is blurry because you should have bought a quest 3. You cannot beat those pancake lenses
Stupid.
The quest 4 is coming out in a year; who plans to buy it and does not yet have a headset, should go for the quest 3s.
The lenses are really clear like 100% for a 200 buck difference the only thing different is the lenses the 3s has better battery same processes so I'm stick with 3s
sorry the q3 is better
That's what he said
its supposed to be. the 3s is a budget, entry level headset.
Duh
Oh wow, that’s news. Smdh
Obviously that’s why it’s more expensive but not everyone has the money for it
Maybe my eyes are not compatible with the quest 3s resolution 🫠
