  • Some of you might be suprised with the title of this video as most caladium go into dormancy in the northern hemisphere in the winter...
But one of my caladium is refusing to do so and I am encouraging that, if for no other reason then just scientific curiosity to see if it can be done.
Just because something has been done one way for ages, it doesn't mean it's the only way.
    So let's see what happens.

Would love an update in, say, February. There are some gorgeous caladiums out there, but I have avoided them because of the dormancy issue. Thanks for this video!

All my Caladiums have gone into dormancy, which I let them, as this is my first year of having these plants. Very interested to see how yours fares; regular updates would be nice. I too have Frog In A Blender as well as Poison Dart Frog, Tie Die Tree frog and Red bellied Tree Frog. They all have the most amazing leaf patterns and colours. Thanks for another great video Memo.

I just rescued a caladium someone was throwing out.. im not familiar with these plants, so thanks for the information! As you said, they will probably be forced into dormancy cause I repotted them. Hope they will make it..

Im about to decide whether or not to leave my caladiums in the pot or let them go dormant. Would love an update to this video!

There are three to four dormancy triggers in order of priority.!
    1. Tempreture.
    2. Daylight hours.
    3. Moisture.
    4. Nutrients.
When temps drop below 20c on average you will notice a diff in your plants immediatly.
Colour changes and smaller new leaves emerging.
As the equinox changes and the days become shorter the plants start slowing down till the leaves start drooping.
As the plants slow down the roots will absorb less and less moisture and the root system will also be less vigourus.
That will absoluty also mean that the plants will absorb less fertilizer which in turn lead to a drastic decline in growth.
Unless you are in the tropical areas and you dont keep your plants well watered under growlights your caladiums will go dormant no matter what you do.
Lack of moisture and nourishment will push them into early dormancy no matter where you are.
Ironically flooding will have the same effect.!
If the plants are under water for too long dormancy will kick in as a survival strategy.
In the tropical areas not all caladiums go dormant annually.
Some do so sporadically but not every year as you would expect.!
As a rule they caladiums do and will go dormant sooner or later no matter what you do.!
If left in the soil and the temps do not go down close to freezing point the chance is good that they will wake up again in the next season.
Caladiums do however not like extreme cold conditions that will kill off your corms 100% if they are exposed to very low temps for to long.

I am so glad to see another person growing it "out of curiosity".
Just for your curious mind. When I was a child, caladuim was "IT" plant for the water plants collectors. Yes, it can grow submerged for some time. When leaves will collapse, take it out and go with the usual dormancy cycle.
I have only one sleepless caladium. My best theory is based on light - how long, how bright, etc.
Out of my curiosity - Is Memo a real name or a nickname?

Ahhh yes I had heard that before about them growing in water, it kinda makes sense based on where they grow. Memo is a nickname as I have a very old mythological greek name that most people find difficult to pronounce

Great content, thank you! I’m wondering if you did this again with your Caladium (s) this winter? And did they survive the winter with all of their leaves and how’d that plant do over summer?
Wonderful information and love the sweater!
    Be well 🕊
