I love this, for the people who might think this is over the top you have to realize what Rodney and Pep are doing here. They're taking a game which many during the rules explanation found stale, mathematical and lifeless and showing what it COULD BE when you're actually playing it. This may be my favorite video you've done since in many ways once you begin role playing it the mechanics actually make WAY MORE SENSE than just learning about it with no real context.
Glad you're enjoying Dylan. We hope the rules and mechanics don't get lost in the mix and hope to strike a decent balance, which we'll work to achieve.
Great play through! Round Suggestion: Pep: Medic to remove Anemia, Crew Quarters to improve morale Mapping drone: take froggy to SW1 Rodney: Build Backup Oxygenators Charles Forklift: Build Warning System Upgrade and roll them dice
My suggestion: Pep: I am still feeling a little under the weather...I think I need a medic's help (send him to the app event). But...I also want to gather some of the things we discovered (take the rover and try to gather the objective token to get the spare parts). Rondey: That backup solar panel I built still isn't working right...I should probably try to repair it before we build the oxygenator, or we will have more malfunctions than we know what to do with! (use the forklift to try to repair the solar panel, and then try to build the oxygenator) ( I also think the green cube on the working block space in the malfunction block should become red because the system block malfunctions hit 5)

Liz Howald I second that with two small alterations. 1. Rodney should do as you said. But he should try to build the oxinator first. If he does that he needs to role the dices and if this gives him a ? (Adventure) it would cancel out the ? on the build action. And if he should fail he can reroll a brown die. If he does it in the order you propose his would HAVE to take an adventure on the first build and risk an adventure on the second build. 2. Pep send the froggy to clear out the event. Boost morale and take a risk when gather the nice material from ring 1. After all he will get a ? anyways and he can reroll gathering if he should be unsuccessful.
Yes yes yes, I am so excited!! Good luck on Mars, I hope you make it back alive :) For your next turn - get the morale up, I think those player special abilities should come in handy
Man, this was all kinds of clever. By explaining the rules in another video, and editing this video down like to the bare bones with some funny patter, you made a horribly complex game seem smooth and natural. Watching the rules and then this speed play through, without the rules, is the way to learn a board game. Genius!
Thanks Kevin - glad you enjoyed! Play throughs became harder for me to maintain over time, but we've recently re-introduced them to the channel, hop you enjoy! Announcement: ruclips.net/video/1TlqeKBcQ2k/видео.html First new episode: ruclips.net/video/fYBaKbWA_FU/видео.html
Shove Pep out of the airlock and take the scenario marker with the probe and scorpion. Next use Pep and a rover to explore for the second marker. Then send him to sick bay for a healing. Rodney repairs the solar panels and works on the O2 backup.
Not too bad of a start there. Bummer about the anemia, but at least you've got extra food to keep Pep's iron up. I think you need to have him knock out that event to get his health back up a little bit. I would also place a couple of player pawns in the Crew Quarters so you can get extra morale tokens for future re-rolls with your skills (we all know how well Rodney rolls, after all...). Finally Rodney and an AOM could repair one of the pieces of the Backup Solar Panels to keep the Malfunction meter lower. Then next round you can get to doing more explore & retrieve outside the HUB when the ? icons have rolled off the Working Block.
This is awesome. Thanks. Quick question, aren't you suppose to roll all 3 malfunction dice as part of the setup as well as drawing a yellow malfunction card?
Only if the setup tells you to (it did not in this case - I think that was in a previous version of the app for this scenario - they may have taken that out).
Weird. I just updated the app and started this scenario again on easy and normal. Both times it told me to roll all 3 malfunction dice. here is a screenshot (if I can post links) www.dropbox.com/s/b0eespnk29v7j5m/Screenshot_2017-07-25-17-39-42.png?dl=0
Food creation seems like a priority, that whole "Need to Eat" thing is usually a big part of survival games. Maybe Rodney should work on that? Pep can get that nasty anemia issue out of the way while he's at it. Meanwhile, the robotic uprising can begin! Gerard the Drone can keep exploring while Charles goes to work on next broken system, while it thinks about removing Rodney & assuming command, your intelligent Forklift would rather it be Charles in Charge! ;P
Hm, after you've reached 5 at System block, shouldn't you change Working Block qube from green to red and roll Yellow malfunction dice at the end of a turn? I believe the systems "interfere" with each other in that order: Working block -> Living block-> System block -> Working block.
The game is not for me definitely (I prefer being trapped on a island and deal with storms and wild animals) but I'm enjoying watching you so much :) Good luck on Mars :D you will need it :D
I'm not sure if you're asking for a thematic explanation or a rules one. Rules wise, it's just something you're allowed to do :) Theme wise, it's a very high tech mapping drone! We made it to Mars after all :)
That's very clever and super disappointing! That doesn't seem like a common shape for pictures frames, so I don't know if I'd ever be able to find it, but it's great as a dice tray. The bevelled edges seem like they'd make reading the dice easy, and scooping them out of the tray as well. Also, it's not overly large like a lot of trays. Anyway, thanks for the info... now I'm off to Aaron Brothers....
Every time I've played this scenario, as part of set up I was required to roll the malfunction dice, apply the results, and THEN start the game. Did you not need to do this in your set up?
This video is great. The role playing is awesome. I hate to say this, but I cannot wait until you hit 18 stress and you RP that out. I have a feeling that will be epic.
I'll go on record now by saying this play through may not end the same as the movie - The Martian. Now if Luke was there, I'd be singing a different tune.
We've totally got this. A couple of alarms going off, probably means the instruments are too sensitive. No worries, I cut their wires. They won't disturb my sleep next time!
I appreciate the effort in making a fun video to watch but as someone who struggled through the rules alone for a couple of hours before giving up... it was hard to follow and understand why certain things were happening or what criteria were being used to determine how stats were changed. Love the channel, just struggled with the rolling narrative.
Hey Nicolò, I avoid reviewing on this channel. I find opinions on what is fun are too varied between gamers (what one person will find fun, someone else won't enjoy). Sorry I can't help with this question.
a little note for Rodney: too much oxygen can cause oxygen poisoning .... the human respiratory system reacquires a mixture of gasses and sadly is suited only to a rather medium oxygen atmosphere .... too much and and we could get intoxicated ....
It could have qualified as the type of game for that, but we are only doing 1 or 2 Showcases a year, and this would have been too close to our first one.
I'm probably a minority here but I am disappointed that this game uses an app. I prefer my board games to be self-contained and the idea that it requires an app just seems awkward to me. I love the Rodney and Pep videos and bought Robinson Crusoe on the strength of their videos (and it is my favorite game). I was initially excited about First Martians when I learned it was by the same designer, with some similarity of elements but was very disappointed when I learned it required an app. Do others like that app and feel that it enhances the game or would they prefer that it not have the app? Just curious.
I'm in two minds about this video. Love the roleplay, but I'm feeling entirely disassociated from the game mechanics. Still a little lost after the how to play video (and I have played RC), and was hoping, at least for the first play through video or two to show with a bit of explanation how the game mechanics worked, and that was pretty much missing.
We did have some concerns about that too. For the next video we might do a more traditional call out to the mechanics and then resume the narrative story telling more fully for the rest of the game play, just to ensure people have a solid footing for enjoying the rest of the series. If someone is struggling with the rules, my priority would be to ensure that they can still follow along, and have some of their questions cleared up.
Don't worry Owen, I think this space thing is pretty easy. Look at that awesome broken solar panel I made out of Pep's bed. He won't need it. The warning alarms are too loud to sleep through anyway.

So true. This is def a game that you need to actively engage in. Great playthrough video.
Very well done, Rodney.
This is the most roleplay you've ever put into a boardgame before
Hah yep! To the point of my not being sure whether the game required certain checks or whether the game is very free-flow
I love how you build a narrative and roleplay around the gameplay :-D
Glad you're enjoying!
This has got to be my favorite play through you two have done so far. please do more of these role play heavy play throughs.
Glad you're enjoying Nathan!
Great play through! Round Suggestion:
Pep: Medic to remove Anemia, Crew Quarters to improve morale
Mapping drone: take froggy to SW1
Rodney: Build Backup Oxygenators
Charles Forklift: Build Warning System Upgrade and roll them dice
My suggestion:

Superb production values! Contextualizing the copious rules via roleplaying is very helpful.
Thanks Peter - very nice to hear!
Yes yes yes, I am so excited!! Good luck on Mars, I hope you make it back alive :)

miha ha I totally agree. Those moral tokens ability to to special abilities are great.

Rodney, this play through went very well. Thanks for your time and effort.
Cheers Jared!

+Joseph Ellis WE'RE FINE! PERFECTLY FINE!
Hahah! Great vid series. I love the banter back and forth. Keep it up!
Thanks Thom - hope you enjoy the rest!
Awesome playthrough
I am thinking on getting this game and the video came in the right timing! Haha
Thanks Watch It Played!
A pleasure to assist!

Uhm the automated forklift does not work alone; isn't it supposed to be manned by another human action/pawn?
+Davide Pessach It can work alone. It's a pretty advanced forklift!
Hm, after you've reached 5 at System block, shouldn't you change Working Block qube from green to red and roll Yellow malfunction dice at the end of a turn? I believe the systems "interfere" with each other in that order: Working block -> Living block-> System block -> Working block.
Nevermind! Just got into second video xD BTW great video you guys!
Thanks! Glad you're enjoying :)
The game is not for me definitely (I prefer being trapped on a island and deal with storms and wild animals) but I'm enjoying watching you so much :) Good luck on Mars :D you will need it :D
We'll take any luck you can send (will it take longer to get to Mars?)
How can the mapping drone operate Froggy by itself?
I'm not sure if you're asking for a thematic explanation or a rules one. Rules wise, it's just something you're allowed to do :) Theme wise, it's a very high tech mapping drone! We made it to Mars after all :)
Watch It Played it was completely theme-based. You're right. What can't we accomplish at that point?
Thanks again, really helped guide me through the start of the first mission!
Our pleasure - glad you liked it!
I love that dice tray. Where did you acquire it/who makes it?
It's a picture frame I found. I laid it flat, removed the glass and replaced it with felt.
That's very clever and super disappointing! That doesn't seem like a common shape for pictures frames, so I don't know if I'd ever be able to find it, but it's great as a dice tray. Now that the system block has hit five, don't forget to change the working block malfunction dice to red! 😳
Yep, we'll be mentioning that at the start of the next episode. Thanks!
Every time I've played this scenario, as part of set up I was required to roll the malfunction dice, apply the results, and THEN start the game. Did you not need to do this in your set up?
I did not (the app changes things, and is being updated, so it's hard to know why this might have happened for us.
Now I'm just waiting for when you break into a fistfight with each other. ;)
I do sense a little misplaced anger coming from Pep!
Watch It Played Must be the red shirt.
This video is great. The role playing is awesome. I hate to say this, but I cannot wait until you hit 18 stress and you RP that out. I have a feeling that will be epic.
We've got everything under control. No worries! Though Pep has been a little agitated I noticed. Anemia is making him grumpy, I guess!
Shouldnt the working block have turned red in the malfunction box?
It sure should have - a correction we'll be making.
WOW! Rodney! Didn't know you had it in you :-)
Hit the game room! I'll bet you'll both feel better.
That's what I'm talking. Let the forklift take care of the work!
I appreciate the effort in making a fun video to watch but as someone who struggled through the rules alone for a couple of hours before giving up... it was hard to follow and understand why certain things were happening or what criteria were being used to determine how stats were changed. Love the channel, just struggled with the rolling narrative.
I worried about that a bit too, so in the second episode of this play through we break down all the details to make it more clear. Hope that helps!
gotta admit, those faces on your custom cards? pretty scary
They're also on our actual faces - even scarier!
What can possibly go wrong?!? :) Gather some wood, start a barbecue in the lab and wait for the ship home. Good luck!
I like it!
Should I get this or Robinson Crusoe?
Hey Nicolò, I avoid reviewing on this channel. I find opinions on what is fun are too varied between gamers (what one person will find fun, someone else won't enjoy). Sorry I can't help with this question.
a little note for Rodney: too much oxygen can cause oxygen poisoning .... the human respiratory system reacquires a mixture of gasses and sadly is suited only to a rather medium oxygen atmosphere .... too much and and we could get intoxicated ....
+AlexanderTF NOW you tell me :)
Hey if Rover gets a name the Forklift can be called Charles... I mean that is just wrong =o)
We are the future Charles not them.
Man why isn't this another showcase game? Seriously seems worthy...
It could have qualified as the type of game for that, but we are only doing 1 or 2 Showcases a year, and this would have been too close to our first one.

Many people don't like the app, and many people do. Different strokes for different folks!
Charles!!!!!
+Minibee We're going to encourage this, are we?
Watch It Played hahaha yessss poor Charles the forklift needs some recognition for his hard work.
Charles is a great name for a forklift.
I was afraid this would get some support :)
Paint your HUB and vehicles !
That would look cool!
I knew you'd do it, Rodney. :-)
;)
man, i have watched this video like 20 times...i think its starting to settle in my withered brain.....i hope i can make it work
It's got a lot going on - you've got this!
Maybe my favorite gameplay you have recorded. Loved the narrative format!
Glad you're enjoying it!
Great fun! Watched this again now that I've played this mission once, and enjoyed it even more than the first time I watched!
With all the rules, it probably comes together a little more when you're familiar with it. Glad you're enjoying Jeff!
I'm in two minds about this video. Love the roleplay, but I'm feeling entirely disassociated from the game mechanics. Just watched the next episode, and appreciated the explanations. Thanks! Still full of drama (or melodrama) and excitement. Good stuff!
Glad you enjoyed :)
Too much oxygen would be a bad thing, as if the O2 percentage got to high you could die of oxygen poisoning (yes that is an actual thing)
Very true!
Hi guys 👋🏻
Hey there!
Maybe a bit over the top.
Only a 'bit'? ;)
Yo
Hi!
It's only a little suffocation.... ;p
Who thinks they are going to die in this gameplay p.s not trying to be mean
Don't worry Owen, I think this space thing is pretty easy. Look at that awesome broken solar panel I made out of Pep's bed. He won't need it. The warning alarms are too loud to sleep through anyway.
2nd!!!
Too much script
No script, but some dorkiness to be sure.
Wow, no script at all? Very witty and good editing then ;)
Yes, the editing certainly helps :)
