    Thanks for the tips. I'm looking at how to improve my time at Teamsport Nottm. I use what I thought were correct lines for hitting the apex but never realised how much the steering input makes a difference. Thought my steering was good and correct but I think I'm turning in later as with your mate 'Lewis' but I do think on reflection I could improve by tying in earlier.

    • @MattWildbore
      @MattWildbore  2 года назад

      No problem, I hope the video helps :)
      I find that the main thing is just trying to get all steering done by the apex of the corner, so when you exit, all you’re doing is straightening up :)

    Good video - could have done with footwork explanation too, which is just as important as the steering aswell.... I'm a newbie to Karting, and these videos are helping me to try different things

      Thank you Nico. I also have a Track Guide of this circuit, breaking down every corner, and an in depth track guide of the Hull Karting outdoor circuit on the channel too which mentions reference points and braking points etc :)

    Thanks for the videos. I noticed a few people asking about when you brake/lift off. I've been a couple of times and am yet to get below 26s so I suspect I'm braking too much. Any videos that go into more detail would be great.

    • @MattWildbore
      @MattWildbore  2 года назад

      Hey Jon, That's no problem, glad you find them helpful.
      Apologies for not covering the footwork - this was one of my first guides. This track is quite fast and really only need to brake in one or two areas.
      Turn 2 (first hairpin - top ramp) - you could try just tapping the brakes to almost lock the rear end slightly as you turn to see if it helps the rotation, but I don't think this is needed. You can lift and coast around here. Alternatively, slight pressure on the brakes and trail-brake it into the apex.
      Turn 4 (bottom ramp) - I like to slam the brakes here - a short, hard stab as you turn to get more rotation in the rear and when you get to the apex, your kart should be pointing at the spectator area, or slightly even more rotated.
      Turn 6 (bottom hairpin near marshal box) - Again, you could just lift/coast this one, but again, just a short stab on the brakes to get rear rotation.
      I'd potentially try doing all the corners by just lifting/coasting so you get an idea of how much speed you can carry round, then if it's overdriving the kart, then just start adding a little bit of braking in.

    • @jonmarriott8545
      @jonmarriott8545 2 года назад +1

      @@MattWildbore brilliant thanks. I do like the idea of trying no brakes at all to see what a difference it makes in the corners! I would never have guessed that all corners could be approached that way.

    • @MattWildbore
      @MattWildbore  2 года назад +1

      @@jonmarriott8545 Definitely - I would use your 15 min sessions to try something different, come off track, check times and see if it worked or not.
      I've not been to the track in a while, but pretty sure I ended up coasting most of the corners and just modulating the speed with slight braking through the corner and have a 23.7 now I think

    Great information regarding kart placement and corner lines. Just out of interest though? Who weighs the most between you and Lewis ?

    • @MattWildbore
      @MattWildbore  2 года назад +1

      Hi Andrew, sure, probably something I should have mentioned in the vid! Louis is roughly 8-10kg heavier. Other videos have done some tests and in these karts, 10kg is roughly 0.1 difference :)

    Quick question…
    Do you touch the brakes down the ramp to the hairpin? Or do you get a front end scrub to slow down?

    • @MattWildbore
      @MattWildbore  2 года назад +2

      Hey Adam - I use to hit the brakes quite hard to lock up the rear to slide it in as you go down the ramp, but now, I just lift off and swing it in as hard as you can and the bottom of the ramp will modulate the speed for you anyway. Hope that helps :)

    • @adamscruton4474
      @adamscruton4474 2 года назад +1

      @@MattWildbore oh nice! As I come round the left hander at the top of the ramp I always start thinking about how I’m going to take that turn but it comes to fast and I’m always making a mess of it. I’ll try that next time. Cheers dude

    • @MattWildbore
      @MattWildbore  2 года назад

      @@adamscruton4474 Yeah, it definitley comes up fast. A good reference point is the second metal pole away from the Apex. The Apex has a bin bag looking thing around the barrier, so use the 2nd pole away from that as your turn in point. I'd say it's like 60%-70% of the way down the ramp, so definitely an early turn in.

    So how much die Lewis improve after this? Maybe do a new vid with his old/new time :) Thx for this one, I'm 43 years old and go rental karting regurarly. I'm was just outside top 100 at our track. Being 1 sec behind track record (35 sec ish). I have been running this track for 5 months. Improved 0.3 sec in just 2 sessions and now just outside top 50. thx to this.

      @MattWildbore  2 года назад

      Hi Benny, glad you enjoyed it. Louis now has a 24.3 I believe, so around 7 tenths improvement :)
      That’s great to hear, thanks, and that’s a great improvement! Which parts do you feel helped you improve the most?

    • @DSBenny
      @DSBenny 2 года назад +1

      @@MattWildbore Most definitely the sliding. I always assumed sliding was losing time, so I used the brake a lot. But this vid made me realize turning the wheel loses time, not the sliding. So there is a big difference between drifting and sliding, as you explain. The track has changed now, so a new challenge awaits. I always felt that I was on my limit, now I feel like I can still improve. I hope to be within 0.5sec of track record. 🙂Thx again!

    • @MattWildbore
      @MattWildbore  2 года назад

      @@DSBenny Awesome - it's definitely a fine balance. The indoor tracks with the slippier surfaces can benefit from the sliding, however, on a proper tarmac/outdoor track, smoothness and less sliding would be better as there's more grip.
      Ah nice, what's your local track?

    • @MattWildbore
      @MattWildbore  2 года назад

      @@andrewterry4666 Always experimenting really. I tend to coast in now and modulate the speed with the brake on the apex (sounds counter intuitive but works around there). A lot of it is commitment to flick it in on initial entry then try and straighten out as much as possible after the apex :)
