  • On day 5 of our 10 day Iceland Ring Road Itinerary, we visit the beautiful East Fjords region of Iceland. We stop at Sveinsstekksfoss, Folaldafoss and Hengifoss before ending the day in Laugarfell.
Hengifoss is the 2nd tallest waterfall in Iceland and is unique because of its red clay layers and basalt columns. It takes about 1 hour to hike up to Hengifoss waterfall. It is an easy to moderate hike on crushed gravel.
Folaldafoss is located in east Iceland off Öxi pass road (road 939, is a mountain pass, that takes you between Berurfjordur and Skriddalur). The waterfall is visible from the main road 939. This road is a gravel road and should be driven with caution. The walk to the waterfall is easy and only takes a couple of minutes.
We stay overnight in Laugarfell, a beautiful hut in the Eastern Highlands. Laugarfell has two wonderful natural hot spring pools from which you can see Mt Snaefell on clear days. There is lots of hikes in the nearby area.
