It’s not even a breed. It’s basically a mutt with a fancy name, and it’s going to be just about as random as any other mutt in terms of what traits it inherits from each parent.
That’s part of the obnoxious ignorance: many of these people don’t understand what a breed even is, or even the most basics of how genetics work, and so they’re shelling out thousands of dollars for a mixed-breed dog that really isn’t any better or worse than the dogs they could rescue from a shelter.

As a doodle owner, thank you for posting this. I wish I knew more when I got mine but they are NOT low maintenance and hypoallergenic!! Mine needs daily brushing when he has long hair and brushing every 2 days when he has short hair after his haircut. I brush him out with a long pin slicker brush, fine tooth comb and metal pin brush. He goes to the groomer every 4-6 weeks for a haircut. Poodles are much easier then doodles grooming wise (and even training and health wise, because unfortunately a lot of doodle breeders are not reputable and do not health test or breed dogs for temperament and health.) There are other breeds similar like Portuguese Water Dogs, bichons and barbets but they do require a bit more grooming. Henri looks so well behaved and such a good pup 😊

They can be great dogs if trained well, but if you’re unable to dedicate the work, it’s not the best breed to get.

I've been a vet tech for over 5 years now and the number of people who get doodles and it isn't the right fit for them is insane. It's very much a toss up what kind of personality they will have-- about 1/3 are very chill and intelligent like a poodle, the other 2/3 often have anxiety, super high prey or working drives, or some other behavioral need that the family wasn't expecting and can't put up with. Not to mention the popularity of doodles and their status as a "fancy mutt" basically means there is little to no oversight on their breeding, making it a magnet for back yard breeders and others who don't know what they're doing to make more. I have an aussie doodle rescue that was going to be euthanized after being "used up" by one of these breeders- and my heart aches when someone comes in with a 2k+ doodle mix that came from a place like he did.

I feel like a lot of people don't know that Poodles come in more colors than just black and white. Poodles come in apricot, red, cream, blue, brown, gray and even brindle! They also come in parti patterns and you can trim them in many ways, like did you know that the puppy cut was created for Poodles? Yes, the puppy cut was first created for Poodle puppies in the dog show world.
So want a labradoodle because you want a cute teddy bear dog with brown and white patches? Look at a parti brown Poodle. Want a goldendoodle because you want a fluffy best friend with that cute golden color? Look at either a apricot or cream Poodle! Standards too big for you? They come in three sizes all coming in various colors! Their coats are always predictable so you never get the unpredictability of the coat type that doodle mixes have!
Want a cockapoo because you want the Cocker Spaniel look with a curly coat? Look no further than the Water Spaniel! Yes, there are other dog breeds other than the Poodle with curly coats. The Bichon Frise, Lagotto Romagnolo, Soft Wheaten Terrier, Portuguese water dog, and Barbet are all curly coated dogs with predictable coat types, adult height, weight, color, and build.
Always do your research when looking for a furry friend and always look into all breeds before making a final decision!

    • @nobodyyouknow7226
      @nobodyyouknow7226 2 года назад +13

@@TheDoomSheep I don't have a problem with non purebred dogs. Actually I think that shelter dogs are a lot more healthier and have a lot less genetic defects as a whole. But my thing is paying for a doodle is just doing that, you are literally paying a severely inflated amount for what is essentially just a mutt. A mutt with a higher price tag and no actual guarantees on health because very few breeders do genetic health testing on these doodle mixes. There's also no guarantee that doodle mixes will come as they're advertised since they are mixing two completely different breeds of dog. And since there's so many different traits to pull from since the parents are so different, that perfect fluffy "doodle" look is never guaranteed. Especially since doodles tend lighten overtime and their coats often change after they shed their puppy coat.
People charge more for doodles than Poodles, which is ridiculous because Poodles are guaranteed to turn out how they're supposed to turn out, doodles just aren't. Why pay inflated price for a mutt when you could go save a dog's life at a shelter?

I have an apricot standard poodle. He doesn't have pompoms, a shaved face, or shaved feet. I've had TWO people know he was a poodle-- one was in the pet store with her poodle. Everyone else asks me what type of doodle he is. He really does look like a teddy bear and is absolutely wonderful.
When I was looking for a dog, I knew that I need a dog that would fit my lifestyle and wouldn't eat my cats, so most shelter dogs were out, and in my area, there's a lot of competition for shelter dogs, which is awesome, but since I didn't have dog experience I wasn't qualified. So I decided the breeder route was the way to go.
Because there's no standards or anything for doodles, it's a free for all. There's no control at all, and no reliable poodle or golden retriever, etc. breeder would ever sell one of their dogs to be used for doodle breeding.

I'm the designated brusher. What I didn't realize when i got my mini sheepadoodle, is that I was getting yet another girl who doesn't like getting her hair brushed. My wife, my daughter, and now my dog.... and i'm SO gentle!! We are getting better with time. Grooming is still a big issue. I had a lady she was getting used to, and she just called the other day and informed us she's no longer grooming and now we have to start over again. In the meantime, I do my best to keep the mats away, even got complemented by said former groomer so I felt pretty good knowing how bad most doodles can be. And thankfully I knew all this before getting my pup!

Our dog is a rescue Airedoodle. She was rescued from a breeder who was mistreating their dogs and we think she was abused. She is true opposite of what everyone says doodles are - she is a chill, sweet, clueless blonde who occasionally gets the zoomies, then promptly flops on her fuzzy pink bed for the next four hours. 😂 I know people spend so much on doodles, but our baby is priceless. Adopt, don’t shop! It’s a blessing to give a neglected or abused dog the life they deserve! ❤

What happened if your groomer had to shave down your precious dOoDlE only for you to bring home a dog that looks suspiciously like --god forbid! --a poodle??
Its dumbing down because there's nothing about a doodle that you can't better guarantee by just getting a poodle instead, while actually having the ability to find a reputable breeder. Even the coveted AuStrAliAn lAbrAdOoDleS are almost 100% poodle!

You have to be aware of the good and bad traits of any breeds in the 'doodle' mix though. Our Aussie-doodle rescue is obsessive-compulsive in many of her behaviors, largely due to the high-energy herding instincts of the Australian Shepard in her. It works fine for us as she has an Aussie sister who runs and plays tag and herding games with her. But it would not be good for someone who doesn't have the time or energy to keep them properly exercised and trained. I fear that was the reason she ended up in rescue, tangled, matted, and seriously under-socialized.

I ended up with an Aussiedoodle from rescue, wasn't looking for anything so 'fancy' looking as her. People ooh and aww about her looks, but don't realize she is dumber-than-dirt. She is sweet, and tries to be obedient, but it takes 3 times longer to train her to the simplest things as she is easily distracted. People need to realize that they are high-maintenance and high-energy, and truly do need constant brushing and positive exercise. The herd dog background can make them seem obsessive-compulsive in their behaviors. Mine patrols the yard regularly, and our other Aussie plays at herding and tag with her (but agility training is going slowly as she is easily distracted 🤔).

Since dogs can truly see blue and yellow like we do, he probably really enjoyed the splash of color. Do it more! :)

Bichon frise is also a great choice instead of a doodle. We had our sweet Buddy 16 years and he was a wonderful good boy with a great personality. We miss him every day. 💖

He sure is handsome and a very good boy too. He looks almost regal. ❤️❤️❤️
