Making a video for this song turned out to be about facing our greatest fear; the fear of dancing in public. And if a crowd of confused onlookers wasn’t pressure enough, we also only had a matter of minutes and one-shot to get this right before security arrived.
We were kind of inspired by the one-shot viral videos by #okgo , and we just wanted a new challenge. At first dancing in a one-shot video felt like it might be just a little too much of a challenge because I cant really dance. But then I remembered a quote from Bob Dylan ( #bobdylan ) where he said, ‘I think of myself as a song and dance man.’ Something about that resonated with me, so we thought, ‘Challenge accepted.’”
Once we kinda got used to the ‘steps’, we moved on to finding the right location. Shooting a video in LA is tough, especially if you're working with a tight budget. Around Hollywood, there’s really no place you can shoot for free. Some of those old motels make more money from movie and commercial shoots than they do from renting rooms. So we spent days scouting public locations that we thought would look great for a video. We had to plan carefully for when the managers weren’t around, because we couldn’t afford the location fees, and shooting permits in LA are crazy expensive.
After much searching, we decided on the spot: a Laundromat, even if it didn’t quite come with official permission to shoot.
Of course, dancing in public presented its own set of challenges-some expected, others not so much. I was ready for people to walk into the shot and start doing their laundry. We thought that would be kind of cool if it happened. But I didn’t anticipate how hard it would be to concentrate on the choreography when people were just stopping and staring at me. It was a pretty wild experience, trying to pull this off without technically having permission. We got away with a lot without making anyone upset. It’s a bit of a blur.
We had to move quickly, because security could could have shown up at any moment. With only one shot to get it right, the pressure was on. But despite the chaos, we managed to capture the take.
So despite the stress and chaos of the shoot, we hope the video captures some online attention, just as it did the crowd that gathered around on the day. I guess its just one of those moments where everything came together in the end, we embraced our fears, took a few risks, and stepped outside some comfort zones.
Big thanks to the creative team of Charlotte Smith, Adrian Hoffman, and Junji & Norma.
