I was thinking the same thing!!👍😍😍 Out here in the States he probably would have ended up in a nursing home! I have a Good friend who's mother has stg 4 cancer, and is treated at the Queens Hospital. Still alive! They never gave up on her, and I wish they'd be so kind to treat all their patients like over here?
I really appreciate how they let him tell his story through his wife. She makes a huge effort to let him talk for himself in the interviews, and doesn't tell his story for him. That's such an important, empowering action, even though it seems small, and it would just be easier for her to talk instead of taking the time to use the board and let him speak. She is pretty amazing, as are all the people around him who support his new goals.
YES! This comment! My favorite parts were when she helped him with the board, letting him do the talking. They get along so well that I found myself giggling and giddy right along with them.

Nicola was my English teacher for the two years I did my GCSE's and honestly there was a reason she was everyone's favourite teacher. She is a genuinely lovely lady who is compassionate, patient and happy to put her time and effort into people, even people others wouldnt. I love following their story because Nick seems equally lovely. It's such a beautiful story that is a living happy ending. Everyone needs their own Nick/Nicola ❤️
Kathy Lucas Physical therapy (that’s honestly underestimated a lot- in general, not saying by you, I don’t know you lol) plus the strengthening in the gym he does can do incredible work on that level. Along with proper food/nutrition, and he’s getting high protein and then coupling it with strengthening exercises. So it’s not surprising he’s still pretty damn strong, but I’m positive it was, and is, really fucking hard.
@@24POWERS No, absolutely no. Emotions are chemical triggers in the brain, and don't work the same for everyone. Given depression is lethal, I highly recommend nobody take this advice, and coordinate with medical professionals if you are struggling. You don't just wake up one day and decide you are going to be happy, and therefore you are. It takes significant work and understanding. This isn't a bum leg you just need to work through. This advice can cause someone to fall into remission and even pander to psychotic delusions. This is SUCH a hazardous a statement to make concerning mental health.
"A disability will never have the power to take happiness away" - I get you want to be positive, but this is such a non-clever statement. There's a thousand disabilities one can have that can take everything away from you, happiness included.
As Mr.Rogers said, "Part of the problem with the word 'disabilities' is that it immediately suggests an inability to see or hear or walk or do other things that many of us take for granted. But what of people who can't feel? Or talk about their feelings? Or manage their feelings in constructive ways? What of people who aren't able to form close and strong relationships? And people who cannot find fulfillment in their lives, or those who have lost hope, who live in disappointment and bitterness and find in life no joy, no love? These, it seems to me, are the real disabilities."
It truly is. Love is a truly unmistakable rarity of this life. It's special because once you see it in its true form you know what "it" is. We sir, are lucky enough to witness such and honest love.
She is a perfect woman indeed. The mental strength that he owns is incredible. They are both amazing, authentic, good and very strong people and their love is truly bigger than life
My son was born with autism. He spoke a few words when he was around a year old but sadly that went away. He's been a lonely frustrated young man these 28 years. The summer of his 21st year his sister almost died from a brain tumour...but she recovered. Just a few days after she came home my son James broke his back. I don't know why I told you all this except you make me cry and smile too. Your a lovely young man and she's a lucky young lady . I wish you both the best of times and much love to those lucky little babies💖
His wife is amazing, but also he seems to have an incredible support system of true friends! This guys social circle is larger and stronger (mentally and physically) than most people I know, myself included. Lol He obviously has to work harder at it, but he appears to be living a full life that makes him really happy. Awesome to see!

There is a movie called the Butterfly and The Diving Bell, after a book written by Jean-Dominique Bauby, editor-in-chief of Elle magazine. He had a stroke at age 43 resulting in locked-in syndrome, with which he is almost completely paralyzed and only able to communicate by blinking an eye. He wrote an entire novel that way.
His wife is right, he is very handsome, he love for life and his willingness to always improve makes him even more attractive, but she is all of that and more, a wholesome, rare individual, who loves without pity and truly connects with his soul, made for each other, who would of thought such diversity would create such a beautiful love story. Amazing couple. Love to you all
I cried from start to finish. little things such as talking shouldn't be taken for granted. everyone needs a reality check once in a while, this was mine.

@Jason Bouphasavanh you're way out of line. Sara K and Robyn Ragone are beautiful women who love life. That's what I see in their videos. Sounds like you were hurt by relationships? Did you feel used in a relationships especially after time when your partner lost feeling for you and continued to be with you and use you for your benefits? Yes? Well BINGO! You are projecting your own hard feelings and bad experiences on two innocent women. Man up buddy! Get your ass in therapy and learn to cry and learn to grieve. Find a male friend to be your mentor. Learn to love good male friends and female friends. Learn how to have long term intimate relationships. On the sauce or numbing out on drugs? Stop it and go to an AA or NA meeting. Get a sponsor ASAP. Your anger is channeled in an ugly way against these two women. Man up like Nick in this video. Did you even watch this video???? Use your anger in a positive, healthy way making small gains. Man up brother!!! Now apologize to Sarah and Robyn.
Locked in syndrome...it's harsh..I lost my husband..he couldn't manage without a tracheostomy..I miss him..it was extremely emotional watching this...I wish u the very best Nick and Nicola....much love❤️🇿🇦
This is one of my biggest fears. My boyfriend has severe nerve damage and, while he can still walk now, he's been diagnosed to be paralyzed by 30 (diagnosed at 14, now 21). We've been together for 6 years and I can't imagine life without him. Watching things like this, seeing couples go through such a hard time, it gives me hope and confidence and reminds me that if he does end up needing my care I will be able to do it with no problem.
You can tell in his own mind he doesn’t view himself as disabled. He’s a happy dude. Smiles all around. Thank god he found his wife. This was truly inspirational.
You can tell in his own mind he’s not JUST disabled.. He knows he is.. His wife knows he is.. and that’s okay.. It’s obvious he struggles more than most with some of his physical limits and he gets angry and upset sometimes just like everyone else.. Along with the smiles in the video, we also saw him angry and frustrated.. I’m sure it took a lot of tears to get to some of those smiles we see and it’s not genuine to say he doesn’t recognize the gravity of his situation.. He knows what it was like before this and I’m sure misses many aspects of his older life, but I’m also sure he wouldn’t trade where he is today, with his body building and wife and children, for the world… He’s made a new normal that is better than most people’s lives in some aspects, but that is not without strife that is greater than most.. Where he’s also different than most is in the amount of mental strength he has to power through everyday, and to continue on trying to rehabilitate himself; and live his life, his way, with his wife and children.. His determination is truly commendable, his energy is brilliant, and his story is motivational.. His physical strength is also impressive af.. I can tell by his work in the gym he’d knock me right over like he did the other buff dude 😂

wow, I really feel for him. I think having all of your mental faculties but being unable to express yourself has to be horribly frustrating and difficult. I'm very happy for him that he met Nikola and is able to have that full time love and companionship. he's amazing!
It is not only horribly frustrating, but beyond claustrophobic and terrifying. I was in the ICU for a month battling guillain barre syndrome. It left my body paralyzed and I was barely able to utter a word or string together an audible sentence like "I'm hot" or "I'm thirsty". This was very scary and upsetting. I had an alphabet board similar to the guy in the video as well as a board that had basic needs the nurse could point to and I could with all my might nod "yes" to. However it was still living hell and that isn't an overstatement. Being able to express yourself is one of the basic needs every living thing needs. Even if you are merely being ignored or discounted in what you are saying, it strikes a chord in you where you feel upset and sort of claustrophobic as if no one understands or cares. Imagine what this is like for someone who actually cannot speak or use their body to get their point across. It's awful and I can't imagine many things worse, if any.
@@IntoBlackHouse Im glad you got better , I hated and felt so scared and anxious about being in hospital last year, I was crying about being in hospital more then the fact Id had my colon removed out the blue an was ill ect I just hated being in hospital and dependent on others , I cried about needing others help and being confined to a bed even though I knew id be able to get up one day an get my strength back, although it felt like what if I never get better it was very anxious time when you start to worry you will never get out of the place and felt suicidal because of it I was thinking how can I kill myself which sounds silly really but its so depressing and awful being sick an in hospital, I cant imagine how much worse it must have felt for you not even able to talk im so sorry you went through such hell
I'm 15 and my dad had 2 strokes when I was 10 which wiped a lot of his memory + paralyzed all of his right side of his body. He couldn't walk, talk, feed himself, cleanse himself, etc. He didn't even remember his own family. It took a hard toll on my 2 younger siblings, I, and the rest of our family. My mom was having to raise us 3 kids while taking care of what felt like another child. It's been 4 years now (he's now 38) and he's gotten so much better. He can stand on his own, talk on his own a little, feed himself, move around way more independently, he completely understand everything around him, and so much more. I'm proud of how far he's come and I love my dad a lot. I know what this struggle feels like and my dad is my biggest idol. He's such a fighter and this man is too! Such an amazing video.
Sending love to you and your family, pal. I'm so sorry that your family has suffered such a tragedy, but I'm also so glad to know that your dad is making progress and that you have a great relationship with him. I can't imagine what he must've felt, what you and your mum must've felt when it first happened.
I can't believe how similar my experience was. When I was 9 (I'm now almost 20) my dad had a large stroke that paralyzed his right side too. He was completely nonverbal at first but now is able to walk, communicate (still has aphasia but my family can always understand) but still can't use his right arm. I felt similarly with being the oldest with two younger sisters and seeing my mom struggle with raising us and also him. Was getting down lately thinking about how I missed out on my dad but seeing your comment made me feel a little less alone and if you see this I hope it can do the same for you :)
These two are so adorable. He's so strong, and stubborn as he put it, lots of people would probably give up. She's an amazing woman for all she does for him, but more than that you can tell that they both care deeply for each other.
This guy is toughness and fight personified. That is one of my biggest fears being afflicted with locked in syndrome and immobility in general and this guy not only is surviving it but thriving and growing with it! Best wishes to this couple
if you compare Nick with majority of others with locked in syndrome he has pushed himself so far it's unbelievable how strong and determined he is to achieve this level of functionality with the syndrome he has to endure.
I am a nurse and had a patient with locked in syndrome. To use the letter/word board, he used a pair of glasses frames with a laser pointer taped to it. This made it easier for those trying to see/understand what letter/word he was pointing at and cut down on frustration with communicating especially for those who did not work with him everyday. The board had common words in addition to the alphabet to make communication easier. I know any ideas can help sometimes. God bless
I'm not crying, you are! But seriously, I struggle with physical disabilities, and watching this man live his life in spite of his own physical disabilities is so powerfully inspiring.
Another update for you guys, they’ve just had triplets! They’re all doing great and mum and babies just got to come home from the hospital the other day ☺️
what a lovely couple. you can see how much they love each other and the way his face lights up with his wife is just awesome. i want someone who loves me like that 😍 stay happy and healthy guys. much love xx
Carrie White It's so obvious from looking at his old pictures (with his mom's narration) that he lived to live, which he continues to do now when the odds are against him. Truly inspiring. I don't think pettyness and being mean to people was ever a part of his life, because that's not living.
So he still has the same mental capacity and awareness as before the stroke, but he's stuck in a body that he has very little control over? That's very sad and must be extremely frustrating to say the least. I'm glad he has such an amazing wife and is able to communicate.
The stroke was in the brainstem. There, we have motor and sensitivity paths, along with cranial nerve nuclei. The stroke affected those functions; not his cognitive capability. That is entirily preserved.
His friends helping him to pose... what an incredible reflection of their friendship. Helping him to be strong and holding him to look his best, both literally and figuratively
What an awesome wife, and what cool mates to work on his training! Nick is amazing, and his whole crew seem like top-notch folks. Loved every second of this.
Stellar that Nick is helping others that are overcoming challenges as well - we all have needed a mentor at some point in life, someone who has been through it and come out the other side even stronger. Good on you, Nick, for sharing some of that amazing strength with others and showing them the way.
I started this thinking how hard it would be to be married to someone and have to become their caretaker, and then got halfway through and realized she married him after he'd already had his stroke. That's rather amazing.
You can't tell me that soulmates don't exist. There are people in this world who are meant for each other and they are destined to be brought together. She is definitely the right woman for him. Such a tragic yet precious story.
My mother was locked in for 20 years. I cared for her the last 10, and the very last 7 alone- just mother n I. And I memorized the board and just put my hands up like at shoulder level- open like before you clap your hands are open. It's hard work and I can say the.most wonderful moment of my entire life- I became one with my mother. 2 people using one body/ mine. And I would do it all over n over again. I was trully blessed. Our lives looked hard n sad to others but it wasn't. We were happy and it became our way of life. God bless and keep you both. oh and my mother just spelled with her eyes for 10 yrs. because they said she would never speak again, no one did speech therapy. I worked with her for 3 years of moving mouth and facial expressions. SHE GOT THEM ALL BACK, YUP! And in the end I was reading her lips very little board. My mother's brain was 100% normal she just had a chiropractor wipe out her "Ponds at the base of her head where it meets the neck. I can't even begin to say how much coming across this story and channel has made my day and my life. It shows people the reality that he is a full person and has value. If people only knew. The strength it takes the locked in quad to even live.

I'm sure that Nick give them back a thousand of times in love, laugh and affection. What a beautiful, sad, uplifting story all together
What an inspiring woman to accept him for who he was on the inside. And what an amazing man to keep living despite this horrible situaiton. I'm inspired and warmed by both of these amazing indivdiuals. They are trully beautiful on the inside and on the out. (Not that the outside matters.) Their truest beauty comes from within. It gives me hope, that if I continue to be myself, maybe on day someone will find me beautful too. Love is powerful, and those two clearly have it for each other.
Seizures AND a stroke is beyond rough. I'm glad he's able to communicate, I can't imagine how it would feel trapped in your own mind and unable to speak.
It's not an easy thing to deal with that's for sure. It took me a while to recover and relearn everything after my strokes. It was a rough journey. But with the help of some really special people and my Faith, I'm here. Seeing his story was nothing short of absolutely amazing.
To be honest it's still pretty amazing he is still even able to move. Like he can workout (of course with help) but he is still able to partly reeducate his body, and he might be able to earn some of his independancy back at some point

Their technique with the board is amazing how she can understand complete sentences from just a few letters

That’s what I was thinking. She is amazing. Love them both
It truly is. Love is a truly unmistakable rarity of this life. It's special because once you see it in its true form you know what "it" is. We sir, are lucky enough to witness such and honest love.
It would take a lot of patience and dedication to do that. Very admirable.
She is a perfect woman indeed. The mental strength that he owns is incredible. They are both amazing, authentic, good and very strong people and their love is truly bigger than life

They actually had triplets! 1 boy and 2 girls ❤

Lol

Hollywood needs make a movie about this badass. What an inspiration 🙌💪
Laura Bosscher There’s no happy/sad ending. His life is ongoing, story unfolding so it wouldn’t transfer to the screen all that well.
Laura Bosscher sorry to burst your bubble but what would it be about
Hollywood would ruin his story.
Steve-O would make it work 👍
His wife is right, he is very handsome, he love for life and his willingness to always improve makes him even more attractive, but she is all of that and more, a wholesome, rare individual, who loves without pity and truly connects with his soul, made for each other, who would of thought such diversity would create such a beautiful love story. Amazing couple. Love to you all

God bless them
Whether he does or doesn't...being disabled doesn't determine your happiness and even if he does recognize he's disabled, what's wrong with that???
@@gotcha9983 please cut your religious bs, thanks

IntoBlackHouse I am very happy you recovered and will say a prayer for you. God bless.
Abc xyz I agree ☝️
This has to be one of the coolest couples I've ever had the pleasure to witness.
This seriously made my day. I'm here all frustrated with losing weight and this guy is a savage at the gym.
Thanks for watching Whitney! Hope you enjoyed!
Such an amazing video.
aiyana sksksk i wish you , your dad, and family the best ❤️
Hope everyone helps mom and dad out!
Your an amazing child. Keep that love and pride for your dad. He, you and the rest of your family deserve it.
Hope you enjoyed the episode ! Thanks for watching!

Soviet Rebel She is too
Absolutely , they are perfect together
God bless
Thanks for the support and advice Darcy! we hope you enjoyed the episode!

I started this thinking how hard it would be to be married to someone and have to become their caretaker, and then got halfway through and realized she married him after he'd already had his stroke. That's rather amazing.

I spoke to him briefly on Facebook and he's awesome!
Thanks for watching Jazhua, hope you stay tuned!
How's he's doing now?
I always wonder how they're doing!
Jason Bouphasavanh dead? No he is very much alive, mate!
BabeLisaLovesBilly last time I checked they were wanting to have a baby 😊
I feel honoured to go to the same gym as this hero!!
Very inspiring video 🙂 My son also has this condition it's been a year now and he still continues to progress a little each day 🙂 Thanks for sharing & all the best for you guys 🙂

More of a man than most I've ever met. As for his wife what a diamond.
Thanks Tracy! Totally agree!
Wow that’s all I have to say is wow. What a woman he has, what a great set of trainers, and family. Absolutely amazing
The smile on his face when she said he was handsome. Like UUUFGGHHHH MY HEART!!!
His smile really gets me. What an amazing wife too, everyone could learn from you both honestly.
Also 14:48 the way they laugh with each other really speaks for itself.
