As a Spaniard who lives in Andalusia and I've lived in different regions of Spain, I can better explain this whole problem with illegal immigration.
Every day (and I'm not exaggerating) boats with African men enter the Spanish coasts, mostly from Morocco and Algeria. ALL men betwen 20-35yo, and there are NEVER women and children on those boats. They cannot be deported because they lack documentation and their countries of origin refuse to accept them back. Morocco has its borders closed regarding this matter and they do not cooperate with the Spanish authorities.
The immigration centers that previously welcomed refugees or irregular immigrants are saturated, so the national police have no choice but to let these people without documentation roam the streets of the city after having given them free food, clothing and water. There are neighborhoods where locals no longer live because they have been expelled by illegal immigrants, women and girls can no longer go anywhere alone much less at night, the rate of robberies and home occupations is increasing every year... and it is no longer safe to walk alone if you do not want to be mugged in a group.
This is not a hate message, it is the reality of every day. There are Spanish towns and cities, especially in Andalusia, that have been completely invaded by Africans. In case of Barcelona, and Catalonia in general, the situation has gotten out of hand and there is no turning back. The girls who appear in the video harassing tourists only represent a mindless minority that does not understand how the world works. Those they call "refugees" are mostly illegal immigrants who live in Spain thanks to State aid and they suck tax money from the Spanish people. This sucks and should stop.
Spanish politics are destroying our economy and our security. Spain is a beautiful, varied land and we are always grateful that you live here. Of course, not all of us make a living from tourism, but it is also appreciated. I hope it's clearer now.

This problem is in all the European countries present. We are having in Holland streng nature protection due to too much of cows of the peasants (that's what I have heard).
Due to that not enough houses can be built. All our loans have low loan interests in % and many immigrants are coming. Law of offer and demand is pointing to rising house prices and salaries that are not following rise of the prices in housing market.
Only change is constant so prepare for next 10 years of huge interests (no more 0%).

The thing is people are buying these properties and improving them and adding the value to the selling or rental price , I agree it’s not good for the locals but as you have seen yourself there are a lot of neglected buildings in some Spanish towns and villages were in the Murcia region and there’s loads of abandoned or half built properties crying out to be developed

All European countries receive emigrants from their former overseas territories. The United Kingdom from India, France from Algeria and Morocco, and Spain from the entire center and south of the American continent. But Hispanic American immigrants in general have easy integration in Spain, for using the same language and relative cultural proximity.

Hi Barry, I have a question ! I don't think I've ever seen a tourist region with so few hotels as the Torrevieja , Orihuela Costa region ! I would be very interested to hear your opinion as to why this ?? I rea.ise that the area was originally developed as a holiday home and self catering area but I don't understand why hotels haven't started to move in as has happened in most places ????

I can see their point of view but at the root of it is supply and demand. Just like in Edinburgh around the Fringe time tourists will pay over the odds to be close to the city centre. I think a Habitatge d’Ús Turístic should be mandatory throughout the tourist hot spots, the income or fines for not having one should then be spent on social housing. I don't know if Barcelona levy a tourist tax on hotel rooms but we are off to Berlin and they charge a nightly premium. But I agree with social media at everyone's finger tips it's so easy to stir things up.

It's quite a complex subject isn't it. Spain are pushing to overtake France for being the most visited tourist destination in Europe so need tourist accommodation but are trying to reduce the number of tourist licenses to try and free up rental properties for locals. The government have said no more tourist licenses to be issued but all of the autonomous regions like Catalunya, Valencia etc. Have the right to set their own policy. Valencia have decided to devolve this decision to local areas i. e. Torrevija can say yes to more tourist licenses while Santa Pola may say no. Obviously less tourist accommodation means less tourists and less jobs associated with tourism.
Illegal immigrants are a small percentage of total immigrants and are an easy target for governments to deflect failings for the provision of Social housing and services.
Lots of Spanish families own second homes by the coast. When we lived in Gran Alacant about 30%of the properties near us were owned mainly by people from Madrid and we even sold our house there to a family from Madrid who would only use it for holidays.
Remember in Wales years ago holiday cottages being set on fire in protest of locals being priced out of their own communities.
More social housing to keep rents down can probably help. UK sold all of their council houses in the 80s leaving the rental sector open to market forces.
The protests are very few and heavily staged. Media like a to drive a story don't they!
