Danielle, I just happened upon your wealth of knowledge. I li,e to watch gardening tutorials on my TV, because it really makes me feel like I am out in the flower gardens. I have gone to my tablet to subscribe/ring the bell for your latest tutorials. Thank you for so much valuable info.❤❤
I'm 6B in Northern Utah and I leave my snaps in the ground and most, if not all, come back every year. I don't cut mine back until spring. I have and the core is hollow, so I'm thinking keeping them up helps too. Before I started educating myself in gardening, I had no idea they were annuals. 🤷♀️
Thank You once again for showing THE WHOLE PLANT! It's just so helpful to be able to see how much room one full plant will take up in a garden. Also - where you're cutting them, and how they continue to grow, these are such helpful things to see! I know other gardners TELL us these things, but SEEING is a much better memory trick for me! Thank You ❤
When I was a boy my mother (may she rest in peace) had a bleeding heart flowering plant. We all had strict orders to NEVER mess with that plant. One day, my mother gave my older sister rare permission to walk to end of out drive & pick some of the flowers for her. She gave sis strict instructions on what to pick & where. Well, Being the little bastard little brother I couldnt let her get away with any extra privilege so I went to the end of the drive & yanked off all the that plants flowers. I ran into the house expecting mom to shower me with praise for being so thoughtful. Well, she popped a cork & sent me to my room to 'WAIT UNTIL YOUR FATHER GETS HOME'. As she was leaving my room I saw a tear. That broke my heart, the knowledge that I had made my mother cry. Here it is 70 years later & I still feel terrible about what I had done all those many years ago. !
I resonated with what you said about them coming back like a perennial. I had a beautiful white one that came back for three years. There was absolutely no sign of it in the fourth year, but three years made it a good value plant. Needless to say, I never cut back my antirrhinums now.
Hi Danielle, I like it when I'm looking for a specific type of flower to sow or harvest in my zone and you have been the best help out there! I also planted sweet peas and ranunculus for the first time this year, successfully too! What a thrill! I thank you so much for your guidance in every way. You are a God send!
Thank you for this video. I watched it before, but it is perfect to watch again right after watching the vid on how to propagate pinchings. The closeup of the plant at the end was especially helpful.
I can't help but to notice as everyone else does..girl your figure is like..POW!!! 😉 thank you for the great vids and info! Youve influenced me greatly. ❤
I have a cool winter greenhouse in zone 3 with minimal heat . It got down to -9 C in the greenhouse and my snap dragon at the back of the greenhouse survived ! so you should have good luck. It didn't die back though I cut off the older part of the plant. I was shocked because I didn't even know they could live more than one year.
I live in Vancouver BC Canada . I have what I refer to as my mother plant I purchased this Rocket in a big pot,. Every year for 4 yrs now she has wintered over. Not only does she give me weeds but she still gi e beautiful blooms.😊
Last fall was my first time growing snaps. I got several flushes out of them when I cut them back. I thing they’re finally done! But I learned so much from this video, thank you🤗
I follow ( I am organic gardening) on youtube. His channel had a story of a farmer in Iowa that chose to not add fertilizer or pesticides to his corn crop. The farmer was told he needed to add this and that by a government guy that had tested his soil. At the end of the season, he had more bushel per acre than anyone around the county. He also had the county do some tests on how healthy the corn was. I don't remember if it was a sugar test or what but it was better than other crops in the area. That farmer went around the country sharing his information with other farmers of his results. Look up (I am organic gardening) on youtube. He has been doing it this way for many years.God Bless you and yours.
Thanks for the info about the different planting times..your snapdragons looks beautiful! This is the first time I planted snapdragons and I’m still learning about them..
I think this would be fun too! Good idea! She's shown it in other videos, but not often enough, I think. Even just a quick shot every week, or every other week, would be fun so we could see how it looks throughout the seasons!
This was so very helpful. Your snapdragons are gorgeous, as are all your flowers. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I am planning a small cut flower garden for next year and am going to winter sow my seeds for the first time. Again, thank you and God bless. 👏🏻💕👏🏻
I wish I could post a picture of all my rocket snapdragons that came back like a perennial. I realized they do that. I also scatter their seeds in my garden too. Thanks for the tips in this video. ❤️
I had Madam Butterfly come back last spring from the same plant roots and they were outstanding last spring. I am trying them from seed this year and I plan to give them some mulching this fall and see what I get next spring. I'm in zone 6A. Nw Ohio.
This is by far the most helpful and encouraging video. How did you keep them so healthy. Do you deal with any bud worms? Thank you! So lovely to watch with beautiful backgrounds.
Hi Nancy! No bud worms here. I do have tarnish plant bug which is very hard to deal with organically. I know some other farmers that deal with thrips choose to only grow the darker colors. Their destructive nature is less visible on vibrant and dark colors.
So much great information. I just picked up a few snapdragons over the weekend and wanted to learn more about them. Love your flowers! Can you tell me how to figure out what group the snaps belong to? There's nothing on the tag for the variety I got. Liberty Classic Mix.
I certainly can do that in the future! It's basically just a smaller version of the hand tied bouquet video I did -I use half that amount of flowers and put them in a quart mason jar. I see this comment often so I will def. try and make it happen.
@@NorthlawnFlowerFarm I would love to see it! Do you sell the jar too, or is it just to hold the flowers? I am doing bouquets in sleeves at our small grocery store....works for me....not all flowers work easily in them though. Pricing is tricky too.....Do you have tips for that? My sales have been down pretty much since Mother's Day. Thanks so much!
Great video! My snapdragons come back from seed. I am always surprised to see them as I move things around a lot. I buy plants when I can find them but haven't bought any in a couple of years. I am so happy when I see them coming up but I don't cut them as I enjoy them in my garden so much. I would buy yours if we were close. Thanks for the tips.
Your videos are always so helpful and peaceful to watch. I'm also in zone 6b and am wondering if I can plant my snapdragon seedlings outside in mid March with an average last frost date of April 15 (even though we usually get frost warnings into the first week of May). Thank you!
When I started to grow stuff in the garden in 1979 when I was yea high in southern NH I was in zone 5a and now I am in zone 6b 8 miles west of where I grew up in Exeter NH. I live in Epping NH. So I know what oceanic warming in southeastern NH is like and some global warming as well.
Did that experiment work cutting them back and treating them as a perennial? Do you find by having flowers all over that you have less pest problems? Thanks Danielle!
I bought some snap dragons from Lowe’s and they are already dead! I have them in a pot. I watered them every day because it is so hot here in California. Also I saw a lot of pinchers in the soil and was told slugs will eat all your flowers! Will they come back! Help?!
Interesting video and beautiful flowers... Do you put any additional fertilizer after the cutting to prepare for the next?...thank you for sharing... Stay safe!
When you say the groups 1 and 2 bloom in the spring and fall, are you talking about the same plant? Like you leave the plant until fall and it will bloom again, or you replant them late spring for fall blooms?
Great info! I have never cut them so low. I will try that. I have 88 seedlings pricked out & growing strong in small 2 1/2” clay pots. They are easy to grow fm seeds. Just got 2 packets from Home Depot. I still have more not ready to prick out but have so many I don’t know what to do with them all! A great dilemma to have.
Thanks for this encouraging video. I am still waiting for my Potomac White and Apple blossom Snaps to become anything, of all the seeds I winter sowed they were the smallest and latest to germinate, and incidentally the ones I looked forward to the most. It’s going to be so late in the season (5b) I’m not sure I’ll even pinch them back at this point so I planted them 4 inches apart. The stems don’t seem as strong as yours, and some have a bend to them at the base, not leggy though. Any tips?
Hi! I wouldn't worry too much on Potomac - they will most likely catch up. If you had intent to sell to a florist I would pinch them back to before the bend. If it's just to enjoy in the home I wouldn't worry! I've winter sown before and always been disappointed with snaps. All the groups are bred for greenhouse production - they really like a controlled environment. I would give growing snaps under light s a try next year. I think you'll be happy with the results! PS - If you want to send me a pic on Instagram I may be able to help better!
Northlawn Flower Farms Thanks for the response! I don’t do Instagram unfortunately (social media’d out) but it’s encouraging to know it’s not just me. I’ll be happy if I get blooms just this once. I don’t have space for indoor lights etc and to be honest other than larkspur and poppie direct sown in the fall I’m not sure I will do many seeds. Our season is just too short and my patience isn’t that long either 😁. I might stick to Cosmos, Zinnias, Sunflowers...and Amaranth, Red Spike is amazing if you haven’t tried. 💕🌸
How do you have the snapdragons growing so straight? I sowed some last year but they did not stand straight up. Yours don’t seem to be staked up either!
Hi Danielle. I'm in East Tennessee zone 7a. You said you put your snapdragons outside in late winter. About what month? I tried to start some indoors in soil blocks according to Lisa's recommendations however I got a later start to get them out before first frost which is Oct. 19th. They haven't germinated and I'm wondering if I still have time if I can put them out in late winter.
How soon after germination do you start to add a little liquid fertilizer to the seedlings? First time for me, and the seedlings sprouted about 1 week ago and to this point they are in a 50 tray and only getting water.
Great information! I have the all season snapdragons. I cut them back once the flowers were spent but I only cut them back a little last week - not all the way down where you showed. My question is would you recommend recutting the stem all the way down at this point?
Hi! That's a great question. It depends on what you want them for. If you want them as cut flowers to have long strong stems I would recut low on the plant. But if you are looking for fresh blooms to enjoy in the garden then deadheading will do the trick. Deep cut = longer thicker side shoot stems, short cut = short thinner side shoot stems.
Oh my goodness this is so helpful!!! I learn something new everyday! I need to buy rocket snap dragons 😅 I just ordered seeds today but I had no idea about how some you don’t pinch and some you do!😅Thank you!💕🫶🏼
