Jared Polin I have learnt so much from you about photography that I have started shooting raw, although I don't get the right picture in three shots but I'm getting there. Also I got your video guide which is helping me a lot. Thanks Mr Fro
Jared Polin awesome info, thank you! Do you have another video or information you could point me to that similarly describes a scale of adjustment for stops of light when zooming in and out with a non-constant aperture lens? For example, when using the 16-80mm on the Nikon D500, I'm often zooming all the way in from 16mm to 80mm and just want to know if there's a reliable rule of thumb of how much shutter speed or other settings I have to adjust between the two ends of the lens's focal lengths (as opposed to wasting time guessing how much shutter speed I have to adjust when zooming in). Thanks!
You know what Jared, I do photography for already 4-5 years, and know all this by heart. But I always click on such of your videos and enjoy every second of it!
Thank you for showing the "math" on here, the calculations is something I always struggle in. When I see a lot of those "How to shoot in manual" videos, they don't really touch on ways to do the calculations. Thanks again!
Back in the good old days of analog photography if you didn't have a lightmeter with you, or in your camera, or a battery for it, you'd use the sunny 16 rule - sunny midday is F16 1/125 exposure on ISO100 film. Are you shooting in a snowy or sandy area? Lower the aperture to F22, or raise the shutter speed to 1/250, or get ISO50 film. It's cloudy? Use F8, or 1/60, or ISO200 film. The settings on these cameras were made so you could easily adjust exposure in steps (which is what you use the EVS setting today, EV-1 is basically the same as going from F16 to F22 or from 1/250 to 1/125 etc.) without needing a light meter. Some of todays cameras of course have different settings that fuck with these rules, but in general most of the time you still adjust exposure in steps, with each full step in any setting being equal to a full step in any other setting.
I cannot believe how good this worked...I have an old POS camera "Kodak easyshare Z1012 IS" i took the photo (in sorta low light) and came out (with flash) over exposed...set my camera to your first manual settings, and black as yours did...then made same adjustments and OMG the picture came out perfect....THANK YOU SO MUCH AWESOME VID
As a beginner hobbyist, these are honestly some of the most helpful videos and have really helped me stop and think rather than just messing with the settings on live view until it looks about right. They've really helped me get better at guessing a good starting point (rather than being totally off) for whatever I'm trying to photograph. I always feel like I "get it" after watching one of these and it makes me excited to take more pictures and apply what I learned!
I absolutely love how you really break down info that is very easy to follow, learn, and digest. I have been having trouble understanding photography as I am newer to using manual mode and did not want to keep shooting in Auto. I will be practicing what you have shown in this video as well as the other videos you have and I hope that my images turn out nice like yours.
Finally I've figured out the holy trinity of exposure. All these years I've been doing it in trial and error (and it was a hit or miss) - good enough for stationery subjects, but not insects. Finally you helped me to mathematically understand the correlation between the 3 variables
Your videos, more than any other RUclips photography person, have taught me the most about photography. Other photography people, such as Thomas Heaton, are very entertaining. I've seen him using these methods to build a perfect exposure but you're the one who explains it and writes it out.
Hey I know you stopped making videos but these will forever be relevant and helpful to us just beginning in the world of photography and I thank you for the detail and time you put into all of your videos:)
Finally I get the interrelationship between the three elements of exposure. "Building the exposure" is sooo accurate a phrase and introduces the right mindset for getting it right.
I've been shooting for two years now - I remember doing this when I first started because I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to manipulate my controls in "manual" mode. I finally switched over to "auto" to find out the ball park that I needed to be in. Thanks for the reminder - I can use this method when I'm shooting in front of clients to dial in quickly. Thanks Bro!
Bravo! I loved the way you broke this down. Explaining the camera didn't get the focus quite right on the auto setting, and walking us through the process of correcting it in manual mode, explaining what & why you were doing it verbally & on paper. Thanks again!
I think it is one of the most helpful 3 shorts or less video for beginners to understand how expsure apeture and ISO are connected. well done, thanks alot!
As a beginner in photography, I would have to say that this is probably one of the best ever for explaining Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO & How to Get The Perfect Exposure. Mind Blown! New Paradigm being created in Brain. Thanks for the mental reboot for photography.
Thank you Jared Polin, I was serching videos with related to the exposure, shutter speed and ISO but this is the best video among the rest. As new to the photography industry there are so many things that I have to learn so this video resolved one of my mysteries.....
Jared, this was an incredible 3-shot video. I have a decent understand of light stops, but this is by far the best and easiest to understand explanation in video form I've ever seen. Well done, bro.
This is very important not only for macro but for photography in general. During the day, I like to shoot using Aperture priority, but at night I prefer to use Manual priority and these tips are very useful. Thanks a lot.
most easy and understandable video about the relation between ISO, shutter speed and F stops... most help full learning video of all about photography...
Great teaching style and methodology to break this process down. More importantly, you demystify it for those of us determined to get out of Auto! Fro Hates Au-to cuz Fro Knows Pho-to! Love it, man, thanks.
You have helped me SO much in just under a month... I wish I could share some before and after with you. Long way to go but with your help I’m getting there
@JaredPolin Thank you so much for this simple explination.. I am a novice hobby photographer that has struggled with this... You made the pyramid so much easier than others trying to explain the same thing.
Listen, this tutorial was all kinds of amazing. I am slightly more than a newbie and I understand the principles behind exposure, but to see the practical elements behind building back the stops of light was just what I needed!
Hello common core math😎 I'm old and it took me years to appreciate the "new math" my kid was taught. but this is exactly how we want brains to build systems even when the components are not in the same units. Excellent!
Subscribed today and after watching a few of your vids, you've inspired me to get outta auto and play with aperture, shutter and iso! Just in time for vacation :) Thx so much!
Thank you sooo much. You make camera setting much easier to understand. I’ve just bought my first camera and have absolutely no idea how to use it. So its been on Auto for the past couple of days. Now i guess I should play around a bit more with the settings. Thank you!!!
Excellent! Great breakdown on how to adjust exposure. Always mention on the goal! That takes a part out of the equation. So appreciate your knowledge Jared. You are an inspiration!
Very much enjoyed what you are putting out and I am learning more from your video's than any other place that I tried. Hopefully you keep them coming out.
Jared, Jared, Jared! Loving your channel, became a Subscriber a week ago, and I'm excited about how fast I'm picking things up. I'm a Babe, just purchased a T5i, and I have a Sony a300, got a sweet deal for both. I've begun the 11 Days to Better Photography and I have plans to go further with your channel. Thanks for the lessons thus far and I'll be watching. Be well, stay encouraged, and an encourager!!!
Jared, absolutely brilliant!!!! Exposure explained like no other out there. Thank you so much. If your course is set up like this video, then I will definitely invest in it.
Jared. You are absolutely awesome! Ive been thinking about getting into photography and until I find a way to afford a setup, I’ve been learnings all I can. You are my favorite source. In the last few days I’ve been going all the way back to your very first videos before froknows even launched. You are awesome! Thank you so much for everything.

Thanks for the lessons. I’m new at this and trying to capture my adventures and travels. I look forward to more math and landscape photography pointers.
I really love how you made it easy to understand, especially for me who really hates math lol that has deal with with this, but loving photography makes it all the more reason to put up with it. Thank you Jared :)
Man.... What can I say!! It's the second time I watch this after a long time and every video about learning new tecniques is very easy to understand and very usefull your awesome (P.S I don't write comments very often)😉

Good one! get perfect exposure in 2 shots
I have taken 6 YEARS of photography and I have learned more from this video than any of my photography classes ever taught. Thank you so much!!
Probably you attended wrong classes) these are the basics of photography
I swear I've learned more from the three shots or less series than anything else out there.
You know what Jared, I do photography for already 4-5 years, and know all this by heart. But I always click on such of your videos and enjoy every second of it!

Your style of “trying to find stops of light” and “building” the proper exposure, makes it super easy to understand. I love these 3 shot videos.

One of the best videos on the internet explaining how to work with those three elements!!!! Awesome!!!
I've been shooting for two years now - I remember doing this when I first started because I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to manipulate my controls in "manual" mode. Agreed.
Finally math that is actually used in real life situation.

most easy and understandable video about the relation between ISO, shutter speed and F stops... most help full learning video of all about photography...
This is the best explanation of the relationship between iso, speed and depth of field that i've seen yet. Thanks so much for the great content!
This is an excelent thing. I usually just guessed and never actually thought about the settings in "steps". Thanks a lot!
I love these kinds of videos you do. Really helps out a lot of people who are interested in getting better at photography.
