90% of DSLRs are crop frame and most of their users have no idea of what a full frame camera really offers. I am happy that sigma brought this versatile lens with big aperture. ☺️
I use the sigma 18-35mm, 35mm f1.4 and 50mm f1.4 Art lenses on my canon 70d. I can honestly say they are phenomenally sharp and very satisfying to use.
I'vebeen earning my living from photography for over forty years, and I've recently gone BACK to crop sensor from full frame, and don't regret it at all. There's a lot of mileage left in the aps-c format, and all the while there are cameras about like Canon's 80D/7Dii and Nikon's D7500/D500, I think that's going to continue for a LONG time. Also, many modern EF-S and AF-S lenses offer insane levels of performance for little outlay.
Just throwing this out there... the 18-35 becomes a pretty damn good 35mm 1.8 on full frame. It's not FLAWLESS, it does have a little bit of vignetting on the corners, but it's pretty damn good. Not too shabby for a lens that shouldn't even be compatible.
It still baffles me that i get scoffed at when I bring out my fantastic 3rd party lenses by a lot of busy pros. What I find annoying is that they dont even want to listen about whats so compelling about these lenses. I sit there just shaking my head. I guess this is why Nik and Canon are able to get away with their prices so high. Great video guys, thanks!
***** The pros I've met have not been interested in talking gear. They seem to use the "tools" of their trade but aren't gear heads. Why do you care what they think anyway?
I use the Sigma 18-35 F/1.8 and think it is superb. Great review guys, I agree with your opinions. The Sigma 18-35 is a much better lens than some people give it credit for.
Great video guys! Also thank you to Levi for trying that garbage GoPro gimbal. I DO NOT WANT! Lol Great sound and look in that last shot of Jordan and Dave. I assume that was the FS7, what was the lens and sound setup?
Nice review guys and just a reminder : Nikon 28mm 2.0 N Ai $90, 1972... second hand. Huge optic : compares with vintage cinelens... U won't get it new, but works like it is... Second market is always there and could be the third choice for some here.
I noticed you shot the Sigma @ f16. I use this lens a lot for landscape, and f16 is its smallest aperture and I've yet to notice any diffraction. I shoot both on the 7D II, mainly for wildlife, and the 5D III for just about everything else, but this lens gives me a brilliant wide (29mm on a 1.6 crop) to mid (52mm) lens. I know the maths don't really work out like this but it's a fair guide. Out of all my lenses, this and my Canon 100mm f2.8 macro, are the only two that are always in my bag.
Its been 5 years now and the most obvious change doesn't deal with the lens, but the Gopro video quality. Now we get stabilize video better than that gimbal straight out of the camera. Also, I just bought the lens new for $480 with the base and I'm excited to use it. Its been on my wish list since it came out.
when jordan mentioned you should get a good crop sensor ultra wide for your crop sensor camera then get full frame glass afterward. Does that mean i should get something like the tokina 11-16mm f2.8 first (design for aps-c), then get 35mm , 50mm, 85mm, 24-70mm (full frame)?
Thanks for a great review.. My Sony RX100 will be sold soon and then I'm upgrading to a Nikon D5500 body. Looks like the first lens will be the Sigma 18-35 f1.8. Images look awesome
Hi Levi! Cool to see you in front of the camera. Thanks for giving the gimbal a shake to let us know how it went. How does the display on the back of the gimbal work? Is it through Wi-Fi? I use the WiFi app for my GoPro Hero 3 Black but an frustrated at times by the 10 second delay on the display. Is the 4 better at that or does the gimbal just use a different way to show the video?
Boter Bug The Sync is connected through the GoPro's usb port, so there's no lag at all when monitoring. It's one of the best features of the gimbal.Jordan @ TCSTV
1:26 That is what you would think but it is not true. Full Frame lenses lose quite a bit of resolution on crop sensors. They usually resolve about half of the resolution as they do on Full Frame. If you shoot apsc then get apsc lenses if "sharpness" matters to you. Check out DXO and you will see what I mean.
Except this is not truth. DXO is a business focused on advertising. Why not listen to your basic physics teacher instead? You know, the guy who only got paid to teach you stuff, not to sell you some new shit? How is it possible to loose "sharpens" (you mean resolution right?) only because the light is projected on the smaller area?
the optics is simple... remember light is distorted after going through the glass, loosing details and altering colors. Good glass keeps images better than bad glass, but it's still glass and has a limit, it's not like you can put a 100MP sensor on a high end lens and be able to crop 20x to get a 5MP usable image... My point is, if a lens can project a 20MP image over a FF sensor, it won't be able to project a 20MP image over a CF sensor, because it's half the size, so it uses half of the glass, half of the light and gives you half the resolution
CF sensors have a tighter pixel pitch than FF sensors. CF sensors inherently have a "HIGHER" resolution than FF sensors. CF sensors crop the same image the FF sensors get from the lens but use smaller pixels the sample the image. A lens cant tell what sensor is behind it.
Hey there, awesome review. Really thinking about buying this lens for my D5600. What do you think about the Sigma 15-50mm f/2.8? If you had to made a decision and choose this one or that one, which would it be? I already have the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8. Would be interesting to hear people's thoughts. Thanks.
I also have 5600 and 50 1.8.. And after few days i will buy 18-35 1.8. In youtube all canon user review this lens...except this. This lens have some focusing issue...
@@insidefeelings9434 I have the 50mm f/1.8 and it is good. Not as sharp as I'd like it to be. But overall I'm pleased with it. I think I'll buy the 17-50mm Sigma 2.8, my kit lens is okay but I want something that gives me that extra quality. I would be interested to hear how you find the 18-35mm, I was about to buy a 2nd hand one on eBay for cheap but decided against it. I should've gotten it! The photos are amazing. But I want the extra zoom for holidaying...
Superb video. I have Nikon D3300 with kit lens 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 VR2, 55-200 f/4-5.6 VR1 & 35 mm f/1.8G. I want to use Nikon 85 mm f/1.8G on my Nikon D3300 (1.5x APS-C) for candid shots. It will give me FOV(Field of view) of 127.5 mm. Before purchasing I want to find out how much room is required for me to shoot indoor, should I shoot with my 55-200 set at 85 mm or at 120 mm.
Nice comparison. It wouldn't really make sense to get 3 primes in that range though. For competing systems - like fuji - you'd get either an 18mm and 35mm, maybe a 14mm and 23mm etc. Still, nice to see the Sigma is that good. Especially since it pretty much covers a range that has no prime equivalents in Canon (no fast 18mm, fast 20mm, a fast 24mm but a pricey one).
I hate this video editing, not enough time to enjoy and analyze photos you take, this is kind of a happy photo walk, please change that, this is a nice channel to learn about photography. Thank you!
Hi there, I've been reading a lot of forum post that people have problem in getting the Sigma 18-35 in focus. Seems the Canon version has the best result. Then Nikon and the Pentax version usually can't focus properly right out of the box and need adjustment either on the lens (through the USB dock) or on the camera. How often of such a problem do you guys see with the Nikon version??
GUYS: DO THE LATEST FIRMWARE UPDATE FROM NIKON (1.04) TO YOUR NIKON D7200 AND GET THE ABSOLUTE BEST PERFORMANCE OF YOUR SIGMA ART 18-35!!! The issues that plagued the Sigma/D7200 is gone!!! I tried it many times and is razor-sharp anywhere in the focus group! do not get rid of your Nikon D7200 or Sigma 18-35 ART
Have you tried the sigma 18/35 metabones Gh5 combo compared to the sigma on a ff or crop sensor camera? Is there any lose in quality on the gh5 mbs/sigma combo? In regards to video, Cheers 🤠🎥👍
I was going to say that you could have stabilized it and it'd be usable footage, but realized you didn't do it for the sake of the bookended review. I think there are better gimbals out there though. Also, GoPro footage could have been corrected a bit so the distortion wasn't as strong.
Hi, can you explain more on what lens should I buy for my crop body? And, should I buy native e mount lens for my sony or should I buy canon lens with an metabone adopter or speed booster? Thanks.
What is the best DSLR for shooting video and what lens would you suggest if i was going to buy one lens outside the kit lens. Ive looked into the Nikon D5300 and D7100, but i noticed you guys shot with the Sony A7s for a video too. Ive looked at so many cameras that im just confusing myself now.. So any help would be appreciated!! Thanks TheCameraStoreTV
I really like this lens [the sigma], I do have one small qualm. I do quite a bit of hiking with the lens and camera in a sling [black rapid] at my side. Rubber grip is showing signs of abrasion. The pointed ridges of the zoom ring are somewhat rubbed off on the bottom. Not that this effects the lens optically, I do worry that in a few years it might affect handling. I do recommend the lens, but it is something to watch out for.
I have watched lot of your videos in the last 3/4 months and love the way you guys explain ins/outs of camera/lens. I just bought Sony a6300 and heard tons of talk around this lens so I decided to try it out. But now when I went to Amazon to place an order it gives me 4 different versions to choose from. I'm now confused which one to get for my Sony a6300. Any recommendation? Do I need any adopter as well? Thanks for all your very helpful reviews!
Unfortunately, this lens is not directly available for your Sony. However, it is available for Sony's A-Mount System, which will not fit on your a6300 unless you are using an adapter.
I currently have them manual Samyang 16mm f2.0 and I want to get Nikon 35mm f1.8 as well. Do you recommend me to just get the 35mm for $200 beside the 16mm? Or do you recommend to sell my 16mm and buy the Sigma 18-35mm?
I recently switched from a 70D to a A7ii and though I stand by my decision and am very happy with the Sony it was a real bummer to let go of my 18-35 1.8 in order to get it. I only wish Sigma would develop some FF lenses for the e-mount.
the hilarious thing about full frame mirrorless are the huge lens sizes. and carrying massive lenses was the problem in the first place. look at that Sony 35mm f/1.4. it's a nano-bazooka just like the canonikon offerings. with full frame mirrorless you are still using same camera bags and you are still the obtrusive "camera guy". and you trade off so much, like AF, handling, speedlights, and lens choice. It's just pointless.
dwfgshdtjfyugh To each their own. For me the handling is great and the AF is more than adequate for my general needs. I don't shoot with speedlights so while this is certainly an issue for some it's not for me. I do miss the AF capabilities of my 70D on the rare occasions when I am shooting sports however at the end of the day I prefer the benefits the A7ii gives me: -FF DOF/FOV (compared to APS-C). -EVF -Focus assist tools (zebras, peaking) -IBIS -Better video codecs (compared to the 70D) -Smaller overall package (when I want it to be) -Ability to easily adapt (and use) legacy glass
+dwf, you seem to be a bit stupid. Just because it's mirrorless doesn't mean the lenses will be small. In general, mirrorless will have smaller BODIES, because of the lack of a mirror box that DSLR's have. Lenses are a whole other matter. If you want small lenses, look at Nikon1. If you want smaller lenses look at APSC mirrorless. If you want to look stupid, complain about Sony FE mirrorless lenses, which have to cover a full frame sensor.
As always I am enjoying TCS video reviews! A pleasure to watch and I intend to like these kind of review more as regular reviews on many well known website. However I have one comment. I'm a photographer and I watch these video's as a photographer. But a bit more overthinking what kind of clothes you wear in front of the camera wouldn't hurt....
Hi, i have a nikon D5300 aps c camera.. i am thinking to purchase a fx camera because i need that bokeh and low light videography.. Should I settle down for sigma 18-35 1.8 with my 5300? Or should I spend around 7200$ for a new fx cam.. What do you think will help in long run?
Hy do you tested the focus with left/right focus points on D7200? , i bought one of this lens and only the central focus point its usable the left/right points its unusable the images with left/right points has front focus. Răspunde
help, looking at getting this lens but not sure whether to go with a Nikon fit for my d7100 or a sony fit for my a6000. any advice would be appreciated
i expected nothing less from the sharpest crop body zoom lens and i kinda want one, but that range is just not very useful (to me anyway) not once you have a 10-20mm, a 50mm and a 70-300mm, i suppose it's great for street photography though
highly highly doubt some generic lens with hacked AF algorithms performs more consistently than OEM glass in most situations. For the 10,000x time, AF lock doesn't not automatically mean actual AF on the subject you want, especially with ring type motors.
I switched from a 70D to an A7ii and miss my 18-35 f/1.8 but am happy with the A7ii none the less. Judging from dwfgshdtjfyugh's other comments (s)he don't care for mirrorless systems to much but the point they brought is valid. Switching AF spots is not as quick as a mid-range/professional DSLR. Had they only made the rear screen a touchscreen this would have been a non issue (switching AF points via touch is super fast in my experience). Oh well, I'm sure A7 iii will probably have that.
Anyone have suggestions for cheaper alternatives to good wide angle lenses for crop bodies? The sigma looks real nice.. but I mean in the 400-600 dollar range?
@Levi: I am afraid the Gopro Gimbal you tested is not really a good one ;-) Did you ever try the G4 Gimbal? I think you will be impressed because the results will be much better and it's also more compact and easier to handle. Maybe you can give it a try in near future...? At least: No! I am not working for the vendor, but we bought a G4 and we are really impressed how good it works :-)

Will the Nikon version of this work on my d3200 ? I read that I need a 7100 to have the auto focus work on the lens, but on Amazon people are recommending this lens on the 3200
if the lens you are getting have HSM at the end of its name means that it is having an hyper sonic motor, and it does not have to rely on body motor. please recheck the name of exact lens you are buying.
why can not I take sharp pictures with my Nikon D3200 camera with SIGMA Lens 18-35mm f / 1.8? I use 125 Shott speed f / 8, ISO 100, what must I change in my camera settings?
how am I supposed to know? You could be out of focus, autofocus could be performing wrong. You could be moving the camera too fast when taking pictures. You could be doing any number of things wrong.
you know your system is garbage when the users are begging for generic lenses! huge mistake going with Samsung. system cameras are SYSTEMS. that means lenses, speed lights, etc. Samsung has a spec'd out super mirrorless camera in a DSLRS form factor, with an amateur sensor size, and a semi-pro price. huge mistake. I say sell it off now while you still can. do not put another dime in a Samsung system.
dwfgshdtjfyugh No other lens manufacturer has a lens like the 18-35mm, I would have wanted this regardless of which camera i used. The camera is amazing, their lenses are amazing, and I will spends lots more on this system. There is no such thing as an "amateur sensor size" :P Get real, stop trying to troll.

Nice! How is this compared to the Tamron 35mm F1.8 with VC wide open as far as sharpness? thanks
@TheCameraStoreTV does Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 have visible distortion and vignetting on Nikon D7500 camera?
I currently have them manual Samyang 16mm f2.0 and I want to get Nikon 35mm f1.8 as well.
Do you recommend me to just get the 35mm for $200 beside the 16mm? Or do you recommend to sell my 16mm and buy the Sigma 18-35mm?
Diggin' the new camera angles.
I do miss the AF capabilities of my 70D on the rare occasions when I am shooting sports however at the end of the day I prefer the benefits the A7ii gives me:
-FF DOF/FOV (compared to APS-C).
-EVF
-Focus assist tools (zebras, peaking)
-IBIS
-Better video codecs (compared to the 70D)
-Smaller overall package (when I want it to be)
-Ability to easily adapt (and use) legacy glass
+dwf, you seem to be a bit stupid. Just because it's mirrorless doesn't mean the lenses will be small. In general, mirrorless will have smaller BODIES, because of the lack of a mirror box that DSLR's have. Lenses are a whole other matter. If you want small lenses, look at Nikon1. If you want smaller lenses look at APSC mirrorless. If you want to look stupid, complain about Sony FE mirrorless lenses, which have to cover a full frame sensor.
I know this lens have some focus problem, my question is, if you use usb sigma dock to manually adjust the focus will it work well? thank you so much!
Does using sigma 18-35 on full frame reduces megapixels?
Greart review. Thanks. I'm looking at Sigma now.
What are your thoughts about new Tamron 15-30 with VC ? :)
Hy do you tested the focus with left/right focus points on D7200? , i bought one of this lens and only the central focus point its usable the left/right points its unusable the images with left/right points has front focus.

This bromance is stronger than Franco & Rogen.
ikr
You say they're both Full Frame lenses but isn't the Sigma is only a Crop lens.
Yes. But no-one is making fast crop sensor primes.
Maybe its just me but do the Sigma images look a tad flat?
How does it work perfectly without stabilizer
Hello,
I have an NX1 and was wondering if you know of an adapter I can use for the SIGMA 18-35mm.
Thank you :)
what lens was used for that intro shot? (the first shot of the video)
Cant wait for the 24mm art to come out
how about the contrast and colours how dose sigma performs
is it good for all round lens
help, looking at getting this lens but not sure whether to go with a Nikon fit for my d7100 or a sony fit for my a6000. any advice would be appreciated
Does that fits on a Nikon d3100?
tell your buddy his go pro gimble is horrible, awesome upload though, great vid.
BUYING THE SIGMA
Real good review! thanks.
i expected nothing less from the sharpest crop body zoom lens and i kinda want one, but that range is just not very useful (to me anyway) not once you have a 10-20mm, a 50mm and a 70-300mm, i suppose it's great for street photography though
highly highly doubt some generic lens with hacked AF algorithms performs more consistently than OEM glass in most situations. For the 10,000x time, AF lock doesn't not automatically mean actual AF on the subject you want, especially with ring type motors.
Guys can you review the a77 markii with 16 50mm? Im thinking to buy but there is no good review about it thanks guys
I've been looking at the sigma for way too long. Take my money Jordan.
great review guys, thanks to you, I just bought this lens to use it on my d7100...
Excellent informative video!
I bought one and love it!
I absolutely love my 18-35 on the D7000! I'm hoping to upgrade to a Sony A7ii, and will really miss this lens.
I'd rent one first. don't expect any mirrorless to perform like a DSLR. take focus point selection, for example. very painful and slow on the a7ii.
I'm planing towards the same Idea =D Don't forget that the a7 has a aps-c Mode and the Sigma is compatible with Full Frame @ 35mm
dwfgshdtjfyugh Good advice! I use back button focusing though;)
Phillip Dorset Yes - and they didn't mention it in the video, but sigma can switch the mounts on these, so you're not locked into one format.
Well... not buying that gimbal, jittery as heck.
Anyone have suggestions for cheaper alternatives to good wide angle lenses for crop bodies? The sigma looks real nice.. but I mean in the 400-600 dollar range?
@Levi: I am afraid the Gopro Gimbal you tested is not really a good one ;-)
Did you ever try the G4 Gimbal?
I think you will be impressed because the results will be much better and it's also more compact and easier to handle. Maybe you can give it a try in near future...?
At least: No! I am not working for the vendor, but we bought a G4 and we are really impressed how good it works :-)
can you please revise some Filter and how to use them ? i found that kind of lacking on youtube,
kingstontom2 We're going back quite a ways here:Filters For Digital Part 1ruclips.net/video/7Sh1zlswYQUP/видео.htmlart 2:ruclips.net/video/qZ2YfdeYXqA/видео.html
What's manual focus like on the sigma?
Quite long turn and very damped, smooth
it feels just as good as old school manual focuses
can this sigma lens work with canon bodies? Especially the Canon Rebel T6s?
If you get it with the Canon mount, yes.
Which camera Dave is using?
Guy Avrahami Dave is also shooting with a Nikon D7100. The D7200s hadn't arrived yet when we shot this.

Thanks Jordan
I wish they'd make this lens for Samsung NX as well, it would be great on my NX1.
you know your system is garbage when the users are begging for generic lenses! huge mistake going with Samsung. system cameras are SYSTEMS. that means lenses, speed lights, etc.
Jordan speaks the truth
Enjoyed this. Thanks.
