The Golden Eagle. There are at least 7 in my neighborhood. I have watched them for years. Last year I was lucky enough to see 3 adults teaching their young how to fly attack maneuvers. It was spectacular. I feel very lucky to have them around. I am Native American and the Eagle is my spirit guide.

Yours is the eagle. When I was a child I was fascinated by a picture of a real bear in a book we had. To me it looked like a bears had wooden snouts. I was so fascinated with that I just had to get close enough to one to see if that was true. Much to my amazement it happened that I was neither afraid of them and they were not afraid of me. I got within three feet of a grazing black bear. She had gentile eyes and looked at me as if ? I could see the fur on her very fleshy snout; it was indeed not made of wood. But I still loved her. I am only part native and I often wondered if mine is the Bear!
I liked your story it resonated with me.
      We are natures chosen,

This is the real top 5
    1. Philippine Eagle - Biggest Eagle in sheer size or total physical dimensions. Tallest, longest legs or tarsus, largest beak comparable to Stellers Sea Eagle but more compact and massive. Its wings has widest wing surface area of all eagles. It also have a longest tail feather can reach up to 50 cm long. Because of its lion like mane crown this Eagle is widely considered by many experts and birds of prey enthusiast and the Most Grandest, Greatest and most Majestic of all species of Eagles alive today. Giving the title as the Air's Most Noble Flier by John Augustus Lindbergh.
    2. Harpy Eagle - Bulkiest Eagle relative to its size. Of all the largest Eagles the Philippine Eagle is the only living Eagle to surpass it in size base on the study conducted at the Chicago Field Museum. Although Philippine Eagle has more impressive prey takings with documented preys like reticulated pythons, cobras, vipers, wild boars, dogs, large monitor lizards, large male macaque monkeys, dears, goats and other birds of prey like hawks and eagles. The Harpy Eagle claws is comparable to a grizzly bear claw reaching up to 5.13 inch. Together with the Philippine Eagle they are widely considered the Strongest Eagles in the World.
    3. Stellers Sea Eagle - Largest Eagle on Earth base on mass or weight but often lags behind the Phil Eagle and Harpy Eagle in size.
    4. White Tailed Sea Eagle - Largest Eagle in Europe. This Eagle has the longest wingspan of all eagles. Its ave wingspan is even longer than Wedge Tail Eagle of Australia. Considered to be the fourth largest eagle in the world base on average and maximun weight.
    5. Martial Eagle - Largest Eagle in African continent. Larger than the African Crowned Eagle. Base on height, weight and wingspan it ranks 5th overall in the world.
Note: In Zoology the Steller Sea Eagle is the real champ. Heaviest means largest. Eventhough its smaller in other physical dimensions to both Phil and Harpy Eagle its still the heaviest hence its the largest.
Biggest in size - Philippine Eagle
    Largest in weight/mass - Steller's Sea Eagle.
Pick your choice. But for me I will go for the size, beauty, impressivenes of power, regality and uniqueness eventhough that I am fully aware that its about the mass/weight and not how big the size is. This is the reason I put the Phil Eagle on my top list.

What about you, Oh Smaug, The Greatest and Fiercest of Calamities. Oh Smaug, the great and terrible, just how the f do you stay aloft? Dont' think you fooled any of us. We all know you're way too big and heavy to flap your weak ass into the sky.
I posit that grand fire drakes like you utilize their fire to gain altitude or help take off. Take off is the hardest part for really big flying animals. Once aloft, the biggest flyers can use thermals.
Well, i daresay dragons could've lived. Not as big as you, of course, but still many times larger than the largest birds we know and that includes terrestrial birds. I'm talking dragons the size of the largest flying reptiles we know of, like Quezacotl thing with wingspan 30 to 45 ft (idk, like 9 to 11 meters i think).
So largest dragons could be a little bit larger than that and still fly with the help of their fire breath. They swallow flint stone, stored in their gullet, use it to spark the flammable goo they vomit up. maybe it's a gas, but i thin kit depends.
Problem with this theory is that they'd run out of fuel pretty quick

I live in Germany (Bremen) and I have seen a Golden Eagle in the wild only one time in my whole life. At least I think we mean the same one, because in Germany it is simply called Seeadler what means sea eagle, however, it could also have been a White tail Eagle. I don't really know much about it!
But this one was incredibly large compared to any other bird including eagles I have ever seen.
He was almost 1m tall and a wingspan which exceeds my size easily and I'm 1.78m, he could easily snatch a medium to large sized dog.
He even landed and apparently took a short break in a field in an industrial area where i worked as Security this time.
I had approached him to within a few meters (maybe 5m) because I feared he was injured. Some of the workers stood about 30 meters away and just said "are you crazy? don't go there, he is dangerous, this is a giant!"
But he was staring at me with an strong, indescribable look, directly into my eyes as if he want to say "hey, I may be a predator, but you're not my prey. So don't make me nervous, because then I'll fight!"
For a few minutes I remained there. Just to see him moving and to know he is fine. Then I went back to my guard office and took pictures from a distance. My colleagues' eyes almost fell out of their heads when I posted these photos to the Whatsapp group.
30-40 minutes later he rose again and flew away.
For me it felt like I had seen a (yes I know it's ridiculous for people who see these animals more often) but it was like I had seen a God or a Dinosaur.
And the most Germans will never see a wonderfull King like this!

As a single sex bird (no pun intended) the female harpy eagle would indeed be the largest eagle in the world. However, males tend to be much smaller than the females; enter the Stellar sea eagle which have a much more relative size difference between male and female compared to all their tropical cousins. I've watched a number of times along rivers as they've hunted, and am always amazed at how majestic one appears as it flies over the water then swoops down and makes a strike. But let's face it - ALL eagles are noble predators who have a dignity and power about them that makes each species so appealing. Bald Eagle, Golden Eagle, Steller Sea Eagle, and all the rest - each is an excellent choice in the world of raptors.

The strongest is the African Crowned Eagle. You said it here, but pretty understatedly. I attended a Falconry demo in UK three years ago and they had one. The trainer said its gripping strength and raw power are quantifiably greater (seriously, like 30% more) than that of the Harpy or any other eagle. He also had a story about the bird he trained (I forget its age). There was an incident, two years prior, where the bird struck him in the back. This was a 200 lb, very fit man. He said he was wearing several layers, including a heavily padded middle garment AND a thick leather coat. The Eagle struck him in the shoulder plexus, knocked him completely over and severely injured him--there weren't even any talons involved, just sheer force He said, he STILL has a knot and pain in his shoulder where the bird struck him as well.

The Wedge Tail Eagle from Australia. Had one stranded on one of my fencepost once. It was forced to land by a murder of crow and due to the fact that it was raining and because of the Eagles size it couldn't take off. It was about 1.5 metres in height and just magnificent close up.I went down and talked to it for a while. I have also had the pleasure of hand feeding one whilst working as a vets assistant.

This makes me wonder if the facts on this Eagle are recorded correctly. Years ago crossing Australia I use to see some giants.

@@H0PeeY True record. I also saw some massive ones out west in the Northern Territory of Australia over 30 years ago now. The eagle that was on my fence post was a magnificent, honoured guest. A day and a half later it flew off. Fortunately I was home to see it leave.

I like talking to the predatory birds at the local rescue sanctuary too! I usually start with the raven group and they talk back. When I get to the Eurasian Eagle Owls, they let me talk for a while and then I get cut off and stared down.

You said that the African Crowned Eagle has massive claws on it's "hind legs".
Does it have claws on it's front legs too? 🙂
I don't understand the order of presentation. The Philippines Eagle was rated #1, yet a few of the other eagles were both heavier and had greater wingspan.
Always great to see these incredible creatures. Thanks for for the video!
