Agree with the comment above. All the "we're sorry for North Koreans" comments feel like they're filled with contempt instead of pity. If you disagree, answer me: what's terrible about future residents getting excited over moving to a new brand home, free of charge? What exactly is "terrible"?

It's 2023 and a country being able to build apartments is not news. North Korea should be embarrassed that it's taken them this long to build some concrete boxes.
This was in USSR, apartments was given free of charge to workers. In 70-80s more than 100 million apartment was given to people, and same time was free education and free medicine. This is what western capitalism scary so much, the good life of people as it must be in society. Congratulation to North Korea! Being under so heavy pressure from usa, japan and south korea, they survive and continue to go to their dream.
I totally agree as a retired US citizen I retired here 4 years ago it's great free heating and healthcare costs only 100 dollars a month get yourselves out here for a great time .
Honestly this is impressive, 10,000 is not a small number, And the buildings look really nice! He managed to make apartments not look ugly and make alot of them too! I wish the best for the people there, To have nice homes like this
If we look carefully we see that the finishes are not the best. From my own experience, this may mean that there must also be some carelessness when building more structural parts.
10k for an entire city district is very small. Socialist housing projects from the 1970s-80s in Europe routinely built city districts for 60-100k regularily and in smaller towns as well - especially when expanding factories. What is probably worse though is the urban layout. The district is entirely designed by the outdated car centric principles of the 1960s - wide highways bisecting the district with no easy way to cross and smog directly centered into people's apartments. Which is all the weirder considering how few North Koreans actually have cars to use those roads. All in all the design is firmly rooted in the past century in spatial arrangement and ideology. Pretty sad seeing people moved to tears over getting the shoddy equivalent of basic social housing from 60 years ago.
If I would put a portrait of Kims in my house it would be my pleasure. I mean Kim Dahyun, Kim Minju... Kidding aside but I love the development of Pyongyang.
Honestly, i have to give it to North Korea when it comes to their architecture. Their buildings look charming and unique, unlike the rest of the world.
That's the least impressive thing about this. The number of units are impressive for an underdeveloped nation, but the design and interior is out of date both in terms of look and function.
You often see North Koreans very emotional and this is always my thought. I saw footage of a comedy olay and people were losing their effing minds laughing. I was like, yeah probably because you haven't laughed in like 6 months
Famine ended 20 years ago man, like sure they don't have that much meat as we in the west do, but the starvation ended long ago. If you don't mind vegetables you can eat normally
Not going to lie but that was cool of Yumi to give the world a tour of North Korea's new town in Pyongyang before it's completed in 2025. But I wouldn't be surprised if the "new town" is only for the people who either works for Kim or who has ties/connected to Kim while the North Korea-born citizens are still suffering under the Kim-Jong dynasty for years. If North Korea wants to thrive and flourish as a beautiful country (like their fellow neighboring countries China with blooming flowers and nature or Russia with their beautiful modern (but a little pieces of the past) architecture) over the generation period to come then Kim-Jong Un needs to stop abusing and open up more for both his country and his fellow North Korean citizens to have a better life and place in North Korea and compete with other countries in the industry (like housing market and healthcare (just incase another man-made virus occurs and spreads worldwide again) for example) instead all this "weaponized" inspired designs in his head.
Seems like a politically biased statement. To say Russia is thriving is..well hilarious. That you thought that was a more apt comparison to you than South Korea or Japan is quite interesting. Also China was one a beautiful country, but they destroyed all their history in the cultural revolution and now it's easier to say what parts of the country aren't overly polluted than which are. Agree with you that the country does need to open up for the benefit of it's people. Also yeah all those apartments go to top military/government personnel. Also a lot of scientists involved in their nuclear program I'm guessing based off previous times they open new apartment buildings. I don't see North Korea ever opening up to the extent it would need for economic benefit because it would be a giant threat to the regime. At the end of the day that's all the people in power care about.
well, Russia is definitely living way better than during the previous few decades. In 2023, Russia became the 5th world's economy by purchasing power parity and the 11th economy in the world by GDP. Pretty impressive considering all the imposed sanctions. 5 of the Russia's skyscrapers are officially the tallest buildings in Europe, one of them being the tallest residential building in Europe. In case you haven't seen them, they look really nice and are quite comfortable too. In 2023 alone, more than 70 000 000 square meters of residential property were built in Russia in 2023, which is more than were built in 2022, and more flats are to come to the market till the end of the year. So yes, why not mention Russia? Also, Russia's cities have a lot of green and recreational zones, and new parks are being built regularly, like Krasnodar Park which was named the best Eurasian park in 2019.
Would like to know more about North korean societal structure. I mean as far as I know about NK these residence are not given to poor people. I want to know what divides their economic classes. Who are the privileged people of the country? Can poor people work their way up to 1st class citizenship? And are the 1st class citizens allowed to leave the country for business purposes or just for travelling?
Privileged people in NK are the ones who are loyal to the party, who are somehow involved or tied to it, and who have not had anyone in their family who has ever done anything to offend the regime in some way or another. NK society is very much based on a caste system and from what I've read, it's very uncommon to get married into a family that is considered to be above yours. From what I could gather, it is indeed possible for someone to climb the social ladder, but it's also very difficult because the gap between the rich and the poor is also unimaginably high. The rich live relatively comfortable lives akin to the middle class in other countries mostly, and the poor barely have what to eat and rely on government rations that are not nearly enough. If you've seen any photos of abundant supermarkets in NK, those are actually just in Pyongyang and are reserved for people who can be trused *and* for foreigners (usually diplomats and embassy employees). It could also be that they were stocked simply for propaganda purposes so as to showcase that life in NK is good and they're thriving. Status is very much something you're born into, so if your family has been living in Pyongyang all their lives and they've followed all the rules, you'll probably have a comfortably life yourself as well. But that can also change. If you or even someone in your family broke rules, it's also very possible to fall out of the regime's grace and be forced to leave everything behind, if not worse. NK also works on the concept of generational punishment, which means that if *you* have done something wrong, one or even several generations of your family will be punished. That means your parents, grandparents and cousins could be thrown into a labor camp for something they had nothing to do with. From what I've read, yes, higher-ups can indeed leave the country for business purposes and I believe even personal purposes. Athletes are also obviously allowed to leave the country. There has to be a certain level of trust established between the individual and the regime to be allowed to leave but even so there have been instances of North Koreans defecting and asking for shelter in the country they went to. I believe high-ranking party members in Pyongyang are also the only people in the whole country who are allowed internet access. Some defectors have said that at least some North Koreans are not as oblivious to the outside world as one might think, but most are probably either too afraid to flee or they don't have the means. There's actually a girl who defected from NK who is the daughter of a high-ranking official, so it's not just the people who are poor who would want to leave.
From what I understand your housing can be affected by your loyalty to the government. If you are Kim jong-un's number one fan you might end up with a better apartment if you start screaming loud enough about your love for him.
As far as know, these apartments are built for the ordinary people. One difference is that there they separate by profession: there is a building for doctors, another for teachers, another for artists and so on... These popular houses are distributed along which new ones are built, both in the central cities and in the away villages. It is true that there is a disparity in the urban city - rural area, but it is not as dense as people think. In North Korea there is only 1 class: the working class. We are also from the working class, the difference is that under capitalism we find ourselves subjugated to the orders and excesses of the bourgeoisie. Since there is no bourgeoisie there, they can enjoy the fruits of their own labor, such as owning a apartment in a nice area of Pyongyang.
@@vini-hs1fw Fruits of what labour? There's very little fruit, if there's no labour. This is clearly just for show, as Kim Jong-Un wants Pyongyang to be a showcase city, much like Ashgabat in Turkmenistan. Sure, some people may occupy these apartments, but I'm sure they're mostly the elite and definitely not the "working class".
It's all staged. North Korea is the world's MOST REPRESSIVE country in the world. You wouldn't survive a day there without breaking a law, getting arrested, and tossed into a work camp for life.
I think these tears are not of gratitude and joy but sorrow because they will have to climbing up the stairs on 11th or 30th floor when the elevator won't work because of electrical shortage, something that happens very often.
They'll be carrying jugs of water up 40 floors in a hallway with no lights. You could be 80 years old and you take what they give you. imagine how disgusting that place will be when it is occupied. They are required to save their feces and turn it in weekly or monthly.
This better than many rich African countries that are not sanctioned who can not even provide for no storey buildings with vast lands. If one thing be told some projects are rather be handled by the State. The state has the organizational capacity to direct public infrastructure projects which no private enterprise can do because it's not profitable. This like also the state of Israel which the public sector does most of the developmental work.
But those African people are free and can find food in some type of way. And they are not brainwashed also everything is not for show like in this video.

This was in USSR, apartments was given free of charge to workers. In 70-80s more than 100 million apartment was given to people, and same time was free education and free medicine. This is what western capitalism scary so much, the good life of people as it must be in society.

I wish the best for the people there, To have nice homes like this
If we look carefully we see that the finishes are not the best. From my own experience, this may mean that there must also be some carelessness when building more structural parts.
You're naive.
What?
10k for an entire city district is very small. Socialist housing projects from the 1970s-80s in Europe routinely built city districts for 60-100k regularily and in smaller towns as well - especially when expanding factories.
What is probably worse though is the urban layout. The district is entirely designed by the outdated car centric principles of the 1960s - wide highways bisecting the district with no easy way to cross and smog directly centered into people's apartments. Which is all the weirder considering how few North Koreans actually have cars to use those roads.
All in all the design is firmly rooted in the past century in spatial arrangement and ideology. Pretty sad seeing people moved to tears over getting the shoddy equivalent of basic social housing from 60 years ago.
how many workers do you think died while building these buildings?

I don't see North Korea ever opening up to the extent it would need for economic benefit because it would be a giant threat to the regime. well, Russia is definitely living way better than during the previous few decades.
