    Great to see you replace the bearings rather than buying a whole new assembly. I loved seeing your press in action too. It sure came in handy. Thanks for another great video Bruce! -Kevin

    Aftermarket spindle assemblies are pretty reasonable on price, but showing how to rebuild is old school cool. Really neat homemade press also.

      Thanks It isn't the money. I do the job if i can because not many people actually fix stuff anymore. Thanks about the press and grinder stand.

    Highlight of this video may be that great looking homemade press and grinder table. Watched your video of it and it's outstanding. Again outstanding job you're doing on that lawn tractor. Thumbs up !

    Great repair Inspector Gadget! I also like to do what you just did with that spindle rebuild. A save the customer or myself the money. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. And great press by the way - Ray.

    Some of those arbors are actually pretty cheap to buy. I replaced one on a Craftsman mower this past Summer and it only cost $15 complete, including both bearings and the housing. Good fix. Neat demonstration of your home made press.

    Now you've gone and done it Bruce!!! lol...After literally two decades of using a machinists vice as a press, I've decided a real press is in order! I'm perusing our local Craigslist to see if I can find one cheaper than I can build one. Excellent Job as expected my Friend to the North! Cheers!! Sean~

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  8 лет назад

      You know Sean I don't use this thing very often but when I do it is just a treat. The only risk is the fact this was not engineered but I know it well enough now to not kill myself when the press gets to a higher pressure. It was fun to make and even more fun to use. It is a conversation piece for the shop too.

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  8 лет назад +1

      When building one the tolerances were tough to get. But that is the challenge. Channel iron is the best. And an old bottle jack is easy to find. The only problem is benchtop presses are cheap to buy, but sometimes a guy just has to build something.

    • @ZippoVarga
      @ZippoVarga 8 лет назад

      I agree...the satisfaction of building it your self is certainly well worth the time. I do believe I will just make one, but it'll be a late Winter project if it comes about this cold season at all. I picked up an Air operated press a while back, and need to figure out the valves and what not, then I'll see how well it works. I only paid 5 bucks for it and I do know that it's not set up correctly because when I step on the pedal, I can get the cylinder to close and open, but...with very little force. Cheers!! Sean~

    Bruce im guessing a new spindle is about $150 and the bearings $25 . That's the type of job I love doing, rebuilding . Love it !!!!

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  8 лет назад

      Yes I think the bearings were about $12 each. Good guess. I like rebuidling stuff and like you I like fabricating something from my head.

  • @k2000b

    I have the same spindles on my Wards Signature 2000 and bought replacement's both sides at a reasonable price four years ago as I knew they were going bad.. getting louder .. I'm now trying to remove the deck its not a piece of cake.. seen you removed the plate from the back..thats what I'm going to do also.. wasn't worth saving the old spindle shafts and only replacing the bearings.. keep in mind that they are past twenty + years old so I think the new ones will last the reminder of the mowers life. LOL will let you know the outcome after I'm done with the job.. was just watching how U got the deck off at this point.

    Being a parts dealer I know what parts cost, and while the assembly is not all that expensive it pains me to scrap a whole part when it can be disassembled and rebuilt like you just did. And I would rather sell two bearings than charge a customer for a whole assembly when the bearings are all thats needed. I also like saving people money. 😀 Great video!

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  8 лет назад +1

      Thanks Pat. I think the price to rebuild the hub (spindle) was less that 1 fifth of a new one.

    Press table is nice. Did you build it or just add the grinders to the top? I could use something like that here.

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  8 лет назад

      I built it out of a 19 inch relay rack from a communication site removal. I was a network tech for the phone company for 33 years (the equipment that did the majic behind the scenes). I know you are busy but here is a link about the press. FYI

    got everything put back on.. also when you drop the mower deck. U might want to also replace the main drive belt that comes from the crank shaft to the center pulley that turns the next belt that go's to the transmission as its a hard enough job of dropping the mower deck you might want to change that belt since the deck is off,. it was quite a job over all since I never have dropped the blade deck before,. belt number for this mower is # MTD 954-0280 Variable-Speed Belt for reference on this mower. I also got a new Belt for the blade deck but didn't change it out since its a relatively easy job to replace it once it completely wears out or snaps off/apart . the blade shaft belt is # 754-0371A V-Belt

    • @k2000b
      @k2000b 6 лет назад

      Ps. on mine I didn't have to take the main eng shaft off.. on mine that plate has four screws on each left/right sides to take that guard plate off,.

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  6 лет назад

      I did all the belts. Thanks. Keep watching. I did finally end up scrapping the machine don't get angry. I had my reasons.

  • @OZDan78
    @OZDan78 5 лет назад

    Just pulled one of these apart. Not quite as easily as you did though Bruce. No press here. The bearings just fell apart. Get owner's guide out to get part number for bearings and notice there is only part number for assembly. Will go to mower shop and price assembly and then go to bearing shop and just buy the bearings.

    Hi Bruce,
    Is there an adjustment that needs to be done or could be done?
    The cable on my mower is good but in order to start it i have to squeeze the brake while holding the bail down...
    Then pull the starter and mower starts right up...
    i'm thinking it needs an adjustment or sorts or the cable is stretched out....
    please advise....
    Thank you...

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  8 лет назад

      The cable is probably stretched. You may be able to bend the tang tighter where the cable attaches.

      I got them from a bearing shop by measuring the old one. Good comment.

  • @jerryf2426
    @jerryf2426 6 лет назад

    Bruce it is always best if you can assemble without putting a pressing force across the balls/rollers. It looked as if the pressing forces were low but if they are not you will "Bernell" the races and drastically reduce the life of the bearing; sometimes from years to days. In aviation we must be very careful not to do that.

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  6 лет назад

      My old saying is that "I am not working on the shuttle". I do appreciate the comment though and I will take this into consideration when i press my next one. Thanks Jerry I was proud to make this one go. Thanks for the great comment.

    Having a press made that repair a lot cheaper .....I'm guessing 2 bearings are cheaper than buying the whole assembly

    also having a bench press helps.. would do too.. but not worth paying a machine shop to do it.. no bench press not worth doing bearings only.. just replace all with new ones

    also here is the procedure on Taryl Fixes All channel.. has nearly the same mower as the ward signature 2000 mower except my speed control is on the right fender just as he stated.. also mine has the slots there ware it could have went next to the forward neutral reverse : he says you can as he is doing change out the main drive belt with out dropping the mower deck.. but dropping it does make the job a little easier to do: ruclips.net/video/n-ukW3UFs68/видео.html
