A new species of bird of paradise has been hiding under our noses. This is the male Vogelkop superb bird of paradise, found in Western New Guinea. It was originally thought to be the same bird as the famous "smiley face" superb bird of paradise. Recent observations show that their courtship characteristics are different. The Vogelkop's black cape is less oval, and its blue breast feathers look more like a "frowny face." Its courtship dance is less bouncy when it circles a potential mate. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology has been conducting an eight-year-long Birds-of-Paradise Project.

That is a special shade of black which can absorb up to 99% of all light. Scientists have actually recreated it and anything its painted on looks like a shadow. I think its called Black 2.0

@@Logical_Chronical actually if they "evolved" their responses would just be a chemical response that is determined by the laws of physics and chemistry, so what you would call attraction would just be a determined chemical process. There wouldn't actually be a free willed cognitive recognition of whether or not the bird is a good mate.

My gosh, I remember watching the episode with this footage in 2008 or 2009 with my cousins. We saw the "frowny face" bird jumping up and down and we couldn't stop laughing because it looked so absurd. It became one of those laughing fits that keeps going, still remember it.

The courtship dance is to me hilarious - But I know that to the female the dance is awesome and the dancer quite dapper! His black and shiny blue colors are beautiful. BTW - Sir David Attenborough did a series "The Life of Birds", with an episode on birds of paradise. Absolutely love the series.
