Breaking Basalt rock with Expando for an underground water tank

- I was called upon to help with an excavation for an underground water tank in North Fitzroy, for this job we used Expando rather than the usual high explosive method.
"Opportunistic litigants"! I like it! 👍
Bloody vermin are everywhere
My father was a home builder in NJ USA in the 70s and 80s. He used to explain how hard they tried to pick lots without any rock, to avoid “rock problems” (my word). Having a rock ledge pretty much meant you would lose money on that house. Blasting was that expensive and problematic. This brings me back to those days when they would excavate a foundation and pray for no rock.
Oh yeah, I have had plenty of opportunities to feel the pain of people that have bought nice looking home sites only to find that there is a 30M long piece of Very hard rock just below the surface, sometimes they just cover it over, spread some grass seed and put it back on the market. A year down the track somebody rings up and gives me the same address to go and have a look at a job....
Nice to see the next generation of ‘council workers’ learning how important it is to keep the content of their pockets in place, with the added bonus of keeping their fingernails nice. 😂.
This video also reminds me how glad I am that I welded a hydraulic thumb on my hydraulic teaspoon.
Always intriguing to see what passes for acceptable footwear at construction sites.
Yeah, I think I've seen it all.
@@demolitiondavedrillandblast Not to mention lack of Safety glasses.
Used the same compound. Unbelievable how a couple of 40mm holes water and that stuff can do
Yes, it is good stuff, I use a lot of it.
the knotted pine ?
opportunistic neighbors hilarious
It seems that, without the push you get from explosives, the rock is still pieced together and as a result digging can be difficult at times.
Also how does this work in solid Rock? I am assuming you would have to drill relief holes similar to presplit operations.
Hi Brian, you are correct, it is great for breaking oversize but when attempting to break out a section from a massive rock more thought is needed. The best results are obtained using a combination of vertical and horizontal holes or rows of 45 degree holes drilled from opposing directions. care also needs to be taken with the timing of the drilling and loading so that you can get it to break where you want and not off to some adjacent hole. extra relief holes are good for influencing it to break where you want.
Did the digger fall in the hole with that one Dave??
That was a classic example of a job that should have been left for a day or two to dry out a bit.
Hi, nice work.. Inside the well with watter possible this type blasting.
Dave, you seemed rather disappointed that you weren't blowing stuff up.
Yeah... I sometimes forget that my mission is not to blow things up... but to break the customers rocks.
Have you had many issues with opportunistic litigants?
I try hard not to give them the opportunity, a competitor of mine was cleaned out recently when somebody made a vibration damage claim against him. The claim was settled out of court as the claimants legal team and experts backed down when presented with the forensic maths of the shot that demonstrated that the maximum vibration at the neighbours residence was only a fraction of the level at which threshold cosmetic damage might be experienced. He thought that he was off the hook until his insurance company hit him for the excess ($10K) to go toward their legal costs.
Ouch!
People like that make it hard for honest tradesmen to earn a decent living, so in the end only the sharks and shonks prevail.
You mentioned blasting puts micro-fractures in the rock, making it unuseable for headstones etc. Does the Expando do the same thing?
No, the expando is great for splitting stone without damage, black powder is good also.
1) how did they get that digger in there?
2) with some of those big rocks and that little digger I was thinking it might be quicker to just drill the rocks and throw a lifting eye or two into them. Lift them straight out instead of trying to crowd them into the bucket.
Oh yeah, that was a horrible site, It's hard work drilling those holes you know.
Nylon choker always worked for me. That's a big strap for rigging, in case you Aussies use a different term.
@@mikusoxlongius - I often use a choker chain Dave, that works well also
How does the cost compare to high ex per hole?
cost per hole is similar for say a 1200mm hole, cheaper for shorter holes a lot more for long holes, the catch is that the hole spacing is a lot less than blast holes so the drilling time and $$ is increased.
Demolition Dave Drilling and Blasting I don't want to know actual dollar amounts but how do you figure a job is it hours spent and equipment etc?
kamurray67 - yes that is about right, time + machinery hire + consumables.
That backhoe "operator" got on my nerves. Keeps trying to dig out interlocked pieces without clearing out the locks first. Just playing I guess.
Just inexperience working in rock this operator was only a kid, maybe 16
@@demolitiondavedrillandblast I see. Somebody needs to explain the geometrics of what he was doing, to him. Thanks for replying.
Nice!!!
One day you will comment "very nice"
you should do a video where u leave the camera and show the moment it cracks. if its possible. or timelapse
I have a time lapse video on the to do list Joe, I need a job that is in a secure location where I can leave a camera set up and a good flood light, very occasionally a rock will split with a pop, usually they just very slowly crack and open up. once a rock has started to crack you can take a short drill steel and press it against the rock and at the same time you rear lobe, closing your ear and you can hear the rock slowly tearing.
you could even slow it down for each pop on the time laps. i cant wait to see it.if youre every lucky enough and you know the time around the stuff actually makes the stones crack. you videk it in the day and maybe kind or bury or camouflage the camera.
How much time required
24 - 48 Hrs.
Hi Dave ! Do you sell that rock on??
Do you want some?
Demolition Dave Drilling would cost too much to ship bud. Nice work.
There are some schist boulders around here that I'd like to split with something like Expando.
Kevin Byrne - there are several similar products, I think they all come from the same factory in China. You should be able to one near you.
Thanks for the prompt reply. I'll start looking for this expanding mortar locally.
Dave have you checked out that YT clip Korea Plasma Rock Breaking, "Plasma Rock Breaking Method using Electro-Power Impactor(EPI)". I reckon it could be a very good thing to investigate as you get the speed of explosives without the danger or the noise. Could give you a competitive edge to your works.
Yeah, it is a deception, 100% all it is in using copper oxide thermite as an explosive and firing with a high power electric jolt. Copper oxide thermite is a lot more energetic and sensitive than regular iron oxide thermite and probably more dangerous to handle. Very similar results can be achieved with smokeless powder (Nonex, PCF etc.)
Search Copper oxide thermite
Why does the excavator not load the rocks on the dump truck as he is removing them. Looks like a city employee putting in time. Waste of manpower. Operator needs a bit more experience
The truck was coming after I left the job as there was no room for both of us, The operator was on about 16 years old and he had no options to re position the machine, very difficult conditions on the site.
Thanks for the reply. Makes perfect sense when room is constricted
Next time use a jack hammer
I was just doing as requsted by the customer. The biggest issue on this job was vibration (or perceived vibration) as we were surounded by very old decrepit buildings.
