Players routinely attempt to purposely hit the crossbar as it is a smaller target than the goal to show their accuracy and they will do it from farther out as it gets more difficult the farther out you are. Messi in this clip did it off a juggle volley from about half field…soo that really shows his level.

Guys I've played basketball my whole life, even had a profesional contract so I can say I was above average. But when playing basketball in the hood and a guy that was a footballer wanted to play it's a different animal. He had no real basketball skills, of course, but the movement of a footballer is something different. They are so agile, so quick and accelerating like you wouldn't belive. Also, the awareness footballer has of other guys balance and to know which foot the defender is leaning on, all in split second, is unmached in sports.
