I wonder why tannic flavors are so hated in whisky but not other drinks. Wine, beer, port, sherry, ect are all okay with tannic flavors.

Great review though given how unique it is, dark color, and the flavors you describe I'd say 3 for value. An EHT barrel proof is going to run you double what this cost because it's only found on secondary.

Balmorhea probably scores in the high 80s for me, agreed 10/10 nose. I get more grain on the palate with Signet than Balmorhea, and the long oaky finish was one of my favorites of the year

To be fair, I haven't tried this particular expression of Garrison Bros., but I like several of them, as well as several of Balcones variants. I think the conversation about TX heat rapid aging making a bottle that can go head to head with one with twice its age is the wrong one. The more interesting discussion is is there a 5 year old Bourbon (not from a hot climate distillery) that can hang with this bottle, or one of the Balcones expressions that are also

I had this at a whiskey festival and was blown away. The price is a big detractor though. I could see paying $100-150. Definitely not $200. I'd rather buy 3 Balcones store picks.

Jules getting much better at explaining the initial score breakdown! well done sir! haha. I haven't ventured into the TX bourbon seen at all. The feeling i get towards Garrison (on all of their expressions) is that they are overpriced for what you're getting. But again i havent had any yet. So ..... looking forward to experiencing the TX bourbon scene and formulating my own opinion. Great review!

The only Texas whisky I've had is several bottles from Balcones. A lot of people rave about it, but I just don't care for it. I don't know if it's the type of corn they use or something else, but it's got a funky taste that ruins it for me. It's a shame. I like their story and wanted to support them, but it's just not for my palate. (I've tried the bourbon, Brimstone, Tres Hombres, and Peated Single Malt.)

I'm a huge fan of some Garrison Brothers products (Balmo, Cowboy, SiB cask strength picks). I've not had anything from Balcones that I've enjoyed even slightly. They are not comparable.

Peated Single Malt and Tres Hombres doesn’t contain any corn.

@@steveno7058 Yes, that's true for the peated single malt, but Tres Hombres includes Texas Blue Corn as one of the three grains.

I’ve seen this on shelves but I can’t justify the price tag. Even if it was $100 I would be hesitant. I’ll definitely get a pour if I see it at a bar though.

Garrison is hit or miss in Texas my all time favorite bourbon is the 2019 Laguna Madre release from them. Balmorhea and Guadalupe are solid offerings from Garrison as well.

  • @macinthergv8910
    @macinthergv8910 2 года назад +1

Garrison's scale is no where near Heaven Hill. You have to think of a Texas whiskey in terms of other Texas whiskeys. You get certain lignans in the life of Texas whiskey aging that are difficult to moderate. The question is how well is that done in comparison to other rapidly aged whiskeys. Still Austin seems to do that well, by the way.

This is my favorite Texas bourbon. The tannic hit / drying effect is really mild on this compared to every other texas bourbon I have tried and agree with Dillon's point about a lot of the popular BPs (looking at you EHT). In regards to value, price is steep, but the comparison to EC BP is tough. First, EC BP is a 6 value out of 5 in today's bourbon market. I think the Balmoreah is more drinkable and I could make a case that I'd rather have a Balhmoreah over 2 EC BPs (EC BPs are 80-90 and you can find this for 160-180) that will just sit on my shelf for years.

Wow I’m surprised this scored so high. I’ve never had it but I’ve had Balcones before and it was the worst whiskey I ever had (cask strength rye). Isn’t this stuff like 2 years old? If it scored that high for you guys then you’re saying it’s almost the equivalent of Elijah Craig Barrel Proof, or a Smoke Wagon Uncut. That is hard for me to believe. Is it really that good?

    • @Lefthandman333

Balcones, Ironroot, and Garrison Brothers (big 3 whiskies from TX) are absolutely nothing alike (imo).
Liking one brand's distillate does not mean you'll like the others. Most people I sample GB Balmo to like it quite a bit, it's pricy- but I think it's great whiskey.

Balcones Rye is IMO not palatable. But their corn whiskies, single malt and bourbon are excellent.
As for Balmorhea I really like this but it is overpriced at this point. A similar experience can be had with the bourbons you mention
